Wanted to mention that the Chiller Theater animated creeped me out too, probably a little more than even Gumby and Pokey or Davey and Goliath.

Theorbo Goes Wild (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 3 March 2019 19:23 (five years ago) link

Had forgotten these last two were animated by the same guy. Also just found this interesting Davey and Goliath takeoff called He Was Once, not to derail my own thread.

Went to this dump, too (almost certainly at my little brother's urging):

Did you ever come to Queens to Adventurer’s Inn?

Theorbo Goes Wild (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 3 March 2019 20:49 (five years ago) link

No, never heard of it until today. Looks like a real deathtrap.

One thing about the Million Dollar Movie- thanks for posting that - is that back in the day I believe it was less common for television channels to show movies so the MMM would show all kinds of good stuff that young Marty Scorsese would watch like Powell and Pressburger’s The Red Shoes, but later they seemed to just be showing stuff the other stations didn’t want over and over again, such as Mighty Joe Young.

Theorbo Goes Wild (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 4 March 2019 03:07 (five years ago) link

MDM not MMM

Theorbo Goes Wild (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 4 March 2019 11:03 (five years ago) link

Okay, seems like they used to show the same movie twice a week or maybe even twice a day. Their mainstay studio source was RKO (Radio) Pictures, home of both Citizen Kane and Mighty Joe Young. Not sure now if this is where Young Marty S saw his first P&P pictures, even if Michael Powell called his autobiography Million Dollar Movie.

Beastie Boys Book mentions at least two of these. Carvel of course, but also the PIX! PIX! PIX! video game.

Theorbo Goes Wild (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 7 March 2019 02:46 (five years ago) link

Also, my weird, non-hyphenated spelling of Tri-state in the thread title keeps making me want to read it as "Triste," although I see some others write it without the hyphen as well.

Theorbo Goes Wild (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 7 March 2019 02:51 (five years ago) link

Those Carvel commercials played in Virginia too (at least).

last night over margs and tacos i looked at my nyc metro hometown buddy (ive been in CO for 28 yrs, him 31 yrs), and my spontaneous service, and his backhand winner, were simply:

me: ONE NEVER KNOWS *austin powers-y eyebrow arch*
him: *character correct* DO ONE?

then we practically came unseated in torchys laffing dapping like the two ancient gaffers we sadly increasingly resemble. aaaand our partners quickly sideeyed eyerolled ignored us.

it was the fucking best.

This thread is entering a singularity over at that WPIX FB page I mentioned where people are meeting Carol and Paula and singing Magic Garden songs to/with/at them at a Chiller Theater convention in NU.

d'ILM for Murder (Hadrian VIII), Saturday, 27 April 2019 19:52 (four years ago) link

Because they heard about it from you via this thread or through some other means such as the radio? Also how do they know who Carol and Paula are, is the show still being rerun?

Ah, forgot about that part of parenthood. Did the same with mine and Schoolhouse Rock, for example.

Perhaps you can find it in your heart to take them to another event at a later date.

Couldn't remember the name of Cap'n Jack McCarthy and for a bit was thinking he covered the Parade on Thanksgiving and not St. Patrick's Day. D'oh!!

In New York, there was a television show called the Million Dollar Movie, which would show a film twice a night for a week. And so one week it would be Citizen Kane. Edited. With commercials. And with the "News on the March" sequence missing. Ha! That was the first time I'd ever seen it! Then, you know, you'd get The Third Man, with half the film cut out. But one of the films they showed was Powell and Pressburger's The Tales of Hoffmann. And it was cut down to about an hour and 40 minutes or so, black-and-white, with commercials. And it had a quality like The Red Shoes – a darkness, and a humour

Looks like the guy who played Bozo on WPIX back in the day just passed.

Nobody Beats the WIZ jingle is a glaring omission.

Deflatormouse, Monday, 17 February 2020 02:41 (four years ago) link

"(Ain't nobody gonna beat the WIZ)"

Also:

"Leave off the last S for Savings" (dial a mattress)
"All you have to do is whistle at PC Richards"
"Someone made a store just for meeee (Food Emporium, Food Emporium)"

This just popped in my head, don’t think we mentioned yet:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhvwUJghNiw

“You’ll love it at Levitz.”

The Wiz was mentioned way upthread, remember looking for a video but couldn’t pick one that seemed canonical.

So it is, as well it should be. Not sure how I missed that.
I couldn't find a video that seemed canonical, either.

Deflatormouse, Monday, 17 February 2020 03:18 (four years ago) link

Like they all seemed from too late in the game, all the ones I could find anyway.

Don’t remember this place having TV ads but posting this link anyway. Seem to remember it lasting longer than this date.

https://www.nytimes.com/1977/11/27/archives/jimmys-music-world-scratched-high-hopes-of-jimmys-music-world.html

Did find this Korvettes ad though, which I don’t remember, but it does seem to accurately represent the store:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7i5KdtfJM8

And another one for the fashion wing, The Other Korvettes, of which I have no memory:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7eueSrwaEQ

There are a couple of early ones on Youtube now but they're not representative samples.
This one has the older jingle, the later jingle I had in mind was more ostentatious.

Finally, this one features the Korvettes department I spent the most time in:
