five months pass...

I'm bummed this new miniseries is a meta-faux-reality TV thing and not, like, a proper reunion of the fictional characters "in-universe".

in the episode where the gang wrestles with an anti-semitic/Nation of Islam-type "controversial" african american speaker coming to campus, Brandon gets in the classic line "Maybe we should have just invited Bill Cosby instead"

nobody knows how many grandmas Andrea actually had, but they all survived Buchenwald

I like how her husband (MARK DAVID ESPINOZA) got an opening credit after being on the show less than two seasons - up yours, Joe E. Tata!

Ta-ta!

TikTok to the (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 14 January 2020 22:22 (four years ago) link

musta had a mafia-backed agent, tho you'd think Joe E Tata would be the one with that

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 14 January 2020 22:26 (four years ago) link

That actress is Lainie Kazan!

tokyo rosemary, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 22:36 (four years ago) link

holy shit

Her popularity increasing, Kazan posed nude for the October 1970 issue of Playboy, which was reused in Pocket Playboy #4, issued in 1974. Her appearance in the magazine opened the door for her to headline at, and operate, two different Playboy Jazz Clubs. Overseen by Hugh Hefner himself, the clubs were called "Lainie’s Room West" and "Lainie's Room East," each on opposite coasts, with the first one located in Los Angeles and the other in Manhattan. Her Playboy photographs inspired the look of Jack Kirby’s DC Comics superheroine, Big Barda.

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 22:37 (four years ago) link

She’s also only 21 years older than Gabrielle Carteris.

tokyo rosemary, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 22:37 (four years ago) link

(bolded text most likely only of interest to Jewish comic nerds like me)

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 22:38 (four years ago) link

STOP
OMG
so funny because in Desp Housewives she played like a Digital madame
this is AMAZING!

surm, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 22:41 (four years ago) link

I have a couple of her records, I can’t remember if I have that one.

tokyo rosemary, Tuesday, 14 January 2020 22:42 (four years ago) link

“Well, this man is dead.”

“What killed him?”

“*glances at TV* My guess? Sideburns and bangs.”

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 3 October 2023 01:21 (six months ago) link

I just started rewatching this. Brandon is such a judgy asshole. The Walshes are giving Minnesota a bad name.

The signifiers of wealth are hilarious though. Valet parking at school, school radio station, brick cellphones, absent parents. BMWs and mopeds (??).

It's quaint to see this kind of midwestern liberalism proudly asserting itself during the Poppy Bush Interzone

hat trick of trashiness (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 3 October 2023 14:43 (six months ago) link

Also, Brenda tricks a 25-year-old guy, over several dates, into thinking she's 21-22 y/o. When he finds out the truth he gets angry and drops her straight home. Her reaction is 'Don't you think this is hard for me????' She runs into her mother's arms who tells her 'Its okay! Its okay!'

I mean, IS IT???

Esteemed character actress (sunny successor), Tuesday, 3 October 2023 14:47 (six months ago) link

Damn, I didn’t remember that plot point at all! But I haven’t watched these since they were airing…

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 3 October 2023 14:49 (six months ago) link

The rave episode, the Flaming Lips appearance but honestly maybe the musical moment that marks a time and place is right in the pilot where Brenda goes to that nightclub and Gene Loves Jezebel's "The Motion of Love" is what's on their soundsystem. (Especially since it was 1990 and that came out three years prior, but maybe that makes sense for the sleazy lawyer making the moves.)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 3 October 2023 14:56 (six months ago) link

I distinctly remember "Hippychick" and PSB's "So Hard" soundtracking a couple episodes.

Truly the Poppy Bush Interzone soundtrack!

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 3 October 2023 15:21 (six months ago) link

need footage of Steve and Dylan gettin' down to "Kinky Afro."

hat trick of trashiness (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 3 October 2023 15:24 (six months ago) link

I was too young to watch this at the time, but have been dipping in when I feel like some '90s cheese--so I tend to go straight to the "very special" episodes such as "Ashes to Ashes", where a Black family moves in next door and face hassles with the neighborhood private security. ("A scheduled April repeat of this episode was pulled from the air without notice following the Los Angeles riots because it was supposedly too controversial" sez Wikipedia.)

Having served their afterschool special role, this family is never seen again on the show.

A kind soul on the internet has done editing work to restore the original music back into the episodes and uploaded them onto Google Drive. If the email linked to my ILX account still existed I'd be happy to share the link, but alas.
