Court & Spark

that's not my post, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 13:56 (five years ago) link

I really hope some of you check out this wonderful album which features a backing group of certain pfunk alumni inc Eddie and Bernie and the life and death suite is some of the most amazing music ever made.

Why are the King Crimson and Miles albums grouped into single options but the two Eno albums separate options? This is Red vs The Lamb vs Warm Jets for me. Might go with The Lamb for the number of times I've listened to it on long drives.

oh, shut up and listen, will you? (Sund4r), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 14:37 (five years ago) link

1. Radio City
2. Court & Spark
3. I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight

Another great year, the first half of the '70s was such a great time for albums, I think there's maybe a drop-off at '75/'76 but I may well be wrong.

Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 14:53 (five years ago) link

Whattayear! Also missing:

Blue Oyster Cult- Secret Treaties
Stevie Wonder- Fullfillingness First Finale
Lynyrd Skynyrd- Second Helping
New York Dolls- Too Much Too Soon

I think there was too but I still managed to fill out 50 and I'll still get people saying I've missed their fave albums

MUSIK VON HARMONIA YET ANOTHER MASSIVE OVERSIGHT

i listen to "here come the warm jets" more than any other album here so that one

. (Michael B), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 15:10 (five years ago) link

Taking Tiger Mountain and Pretzel Logic are both tempting but I may have to vote for my favorite Bowie album.

o. nate, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 15:28 (five years ago) link

interesting picks. i always thought of '74 as the last great year for prog, but when i go through my '74 i am finding a lot of soul as well. blue magic s/t, black heat's "no time to burn", george duke's "feel"... AND WHERE THE FUCK IS FULFILLINGNESS' FIRST FINALE? also, casablanca moon, kimono my house, _todd_

Diamond Dogs is my fave Bowie

i am torn in between "here come the warm jets" and "on the beach". it used to be the former but i go for the latter now. such a gorgeous stream of melancholy.

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 15:51 (five years ago) link

Ultiumately, I concur, korny.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 15:57 (five years ago) link

I'm torn between Zuckerzeit, which is one of those albums that I always enjoy hearing no matter what, and (kind of surprisingly) On the Beach. The Fela is once again super tempting, I probably should have held out for Confusion tbh, which is colossal.

The Jorge Ben and Harmonia albums already mentioned would be my own most important additions along with Dadawah, Peace & Love and Keith Hudson, Flesh of My Flesh Blood of My Blood. This is also a foundational year for dub (Pick a Dub, Dub from the Roots, The Roots of Dub).

rob, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 16:06 (five years ago) link

Eno will get my vote for 75 so I'll choose The Lamb for 74. It still feels wrong to not click On The Beach or Court & Spark

doug watson, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 16:38 (five years ago) link

my 75 list is currently 56 strong so will have to double up artists again.

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 16:59 (five years ago) link

The Payback, for me, Clive.

does it look like i'm here (jon123), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 17:12 (five years ago) link

Probably going to vote for "Soon Over Babaluma" because I don't think anyone else will.

The Vangelis of Dating (Tom D.), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 17:43 (five years ago) link

Big Star - Radio City
David Bowie - Diamond Dogs
Funkadelic - Standing on the Verge of Getting It On
Gram Parsons - Grievous Angel
Kraftwerk - Autobahn

Not a good year for this rockist (no Sabbath album!) but I will go with Parsons only slightly over Kraftwerk and a little above the rest.

A lot of love here for Court And Spark. Its a great album, it took a long time to come around to though compared to other Joni albums

. (Michael B), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 18:05 (five years ago) link

eno will still win

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 18:57 (five years ago) link

Favorites here: the two Enos, Davis, On the Beach, I want to see the bright lights tonight, Court & Spark, They Say I'm Different, Confusion.
Wow, Autobahn is from 1974 ?
Rock Bottom I don't return to.

Where are Slapp Happy (seriously, for a krautrock and J.Mitchell fan !), At the Helm (East NY Ensemble de Music), Troppo (M. Garrick), Jolene, Veedon Fleece, I Can't stand the rain ?

Nabozo, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 19:00 (five years ago) link

I voted for Davis cause Get Up with It is my favorite by him and cause you split Mr Jean Baptise de la Salle in two.

Nabozo, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 19:02 (five years ago) link

Eno, but doubtless most people who say that here will go for the wrong one

imago, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 19:03 (five years ago) link

Oh yeah, and A tábua de esmeralda cause it's brilliant and Errare Humanum Est is a top 10 songs of all-time.

Nabozo, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 19:05 (five years ago) link

I went with my gut feeling on the King Crimson twofer, no regrets

great list, and yeah Slapp Happy would be my personal #1 from this year

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 19:08 (five years ago) link

What a bloody ridiculous list. And without the aforementioned reggae records, New Skin for the Old Ceremony, Joe Henderson's The Elements and Clifford Jordan's Glass Bead Games. Dang.

Good cop, Babcock (Chinaski), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 19:09 (five years ago) link

Thus Spoke Darraghustra (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 19:11 (five years ago) link

1974 I was really all about Sparks, both of their '74 albums are on my alltime list. Nice to see Hatfield and the North mentioned above, I may have played their s/t more than any of the albums on the poll.

eno won't win because of split voting. i think it is either neil or joni who will finish first. maybe robert has a chance too.

Ich bin kein Berliner (alex in mainhattan), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 20:38 (five years ago) link

There's my favourite Bowie, maybe my favourite Neil Young, totally amazing mindblowing stuff by Eno, Genesis, King Crimson, Roxy Music (and a wonderful Richard & Linda Thompson album as well).
But even if I am a massive fan of all of those and especially Bowie and Diamond Dogs IS my fave Bowie...
It's Gene Clark - No Other for me.

Valentijn, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 20:50 (five years ago) link

missed the Richard & Linda Thompson, that might have beaten Neil Young, but I'm happy with my choice.

other great reggae albums from '74:

King Tubby - Dub From the Roots
Keith Hudson & Family Man - Pick a Dub
Augustus Pablo - This Is Augustus Pablo
Burning Spear - Rocking Time
Keith Hudson - Entering the Dragon

Neil S, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 20:57 (five years ago) link

Get Up With It tho.

*there's (Noel Emits), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 21:08 (five years ago) link

Kimono my House is the big omission here. And Relayer :)

two great Magma albums this year too - Kohntarkosz and Wurdah Itah, though I don't know if the latter was known by that name back then
