Oh christ, I'm going to have to go consult urbandictionary.com, aren't I?

Slap is a verb. Bop is a noun.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 24 February 2019 18:37 (five years ago) link

bop as in "she bop" is a verb though, no?

The immortal Hydra Viridisimma (outdoor_miner), Sunday, 24 February 2019 18:40 (five years ago) link

In modern parlance, bop is somewhat equivalent to what we would call a banger five years ago or a jam 15-20 years ago.

It can still be a verb as well if you wish.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 24 February 2019 18:44 (five years ago) link

What about "getting hype"? It sounds kinda like "you're bias".

☮ (peace, man), Sunday, 24 February 2019 19:45 (five years ago) link

gonna troll all the youngs by saying "this record yeets"

theorizing your yells (katherine), Sunday, 24 February 2019 19:59 (five years ago) link

lol

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 24 February 2019 20:03 (five years ago) link

xpost "hype" has been used colloquially as an adjective for a while now. might be helpful to compare it to what's happened with "chill" in the past 15-or-so years. also, not sure if you were being facetious about urban dictionary, but it tends to track actual usage pretty well: https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=hype

social network "this is my jam" really never had a chance

maffew12, Sunday, 24 February 2019 20:14 (five years ago) link

I loved that place. Made so many friends there. I still mourn the loss.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 24 February 2019 20:18 (five years ago) link

In some ways, it was the ideal of what a music-based internet community should be. I never fought with or held a grudge against any single person there for four whole years. It was just at its core about discovery and sharing. It wasn't long for this cruel world.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 24 February 2019 20:20 (five years ago) link

I think my last jam was a Carly bop :'(

maffew12, Sunday, 24 February 2019 20:48 (five years ago) link

i've heard some songs from this and... i don't think anyone has anything to worry about

J0rdan S., Monday, 25 February 2019 04:35 (five years ago) link

hoping that means the album is on the way sooner rather than later and we don't have another promotion cycle as messy as Emotion's was

"Party for One" was underwhelming as a lead single but it's still quite good. everything i've heard of NTIFY (including a very very low quality leak of what seemed to be the full track) suggests it will be fantastic so i'm not very worried about the album

ufo, Monday, 25 February 2019 05:02 (five years ago) link

2015 might as well have been a hundred years ago. Do albums even release at region specific times anymore?

Johnny Fever, Monday, 25 February 2019 05:21 (five years ago) link

huh, both new songs sure are great

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 17:11 (five years ago) link

"now that i've found you" makes this year's betty who album a little redundant lol

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 17:11 (five years ago) link

"no drug like me": at last a sequel to my favorite crj song "warm blood"

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 17:14 (five years ago) link

and pretty instantly one of my favorite things she's ever done

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 17:15 (five years ago) link

It’s a 👍👍

This year's Betty Who album does that to itself.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 17:26 (five years ago) link

that's a little too cynical for me, there are some jams on it and it's better than the last one

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 17:29 (five years ago) link

Both songs are awesome, can't wait for this album

Vinnie, Thursday, 28 February 2019 01:15 (five years ago) link

Yeah, good stuff.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 28 February 2019 02:30 (five years ago) link

certified bopperinos

maffew12, Thursday, 28 February 2019 12:28 (five years ago) link

Songs are good. Album isn't due out until this summer though, which depresses me a little, but will hopefully help her in terms of release strategy or something.

☮ (peace, man), Thursday, 28 February 2019 12:30 (five years ago) link

these songs are really nice, looking forward to the album even though i doubt it'll feel anywhere near as exciting as Emotion did

if she mentioned a release window, that's something at least, though it's a shame it's still a while away then.

ufo, Thursday, 28 February 2019 12:47 (five years ago) link

none of these songs have completely ruled my life like say the night the title track of emotion leaked but i'm hopeful

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 28 February 2019 16:21 (five years ago) link

yeah that's my feeling as well. pretty solid but no eurekas yet.

bhad bundy (Simon H.), Thursday, 28 February 2019 16:27 (five years ago) link

I thought it was very bold of Popjustice to point out that these songs aren't exceptional and that "Cut To The Feeling" being left of Emotion and B-Side suggests that Jepsen and her camp don't really know what they're doing

boxedjoy, Sunday, 3 March 2019 11:00 (five years ago) link

doesn’t seem v bold of popjustice to be wrong, seems like their normal thing

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Sunday, 3 March 2019 13:35 (five years ago) link

finally heard these and am board with them except for one thing -- between "no drug like me" and "party for one" what the hell is going on with her vocals? her voice used to be so clear and bright, and now it's like listening to '10s vs. '90s Mariah Carey. did she get a new and terrible vocal producer? is she trying to make her vocals breathy in some ill-advised R&B pivot? (which wouldn't even make sense, since there are plenty of R&B vocalists with that same brightness of tone -- Kehlani comes to mind)? is this a casualty of The New Chill in pop (who the hell listened to Carly Rae Jepsen for chill songs?) did she blow out her voice on the "Cut to the Feeling" chorus?

I wasn't sold on the song itself but the video has totally won me over.

Oh fuck, is this an April Fools Day thing?

☮ (peace, man), Monday, 1 April 2019 14:24 (five years ago) link

i don't think so

wouldn't love to be proven wrong here

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Monday, 1 April 2019 14:26 (five years ago) link

Real; ticketmaster has tour pre-order going up tomorrow

xp that pre-order will take you all the way through the cart where you enter your credit card info, so if it's a prank it's also probably illegal.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 1 April 2019 14:30 (five years ago) link

art direction taking a lot of cues from poppy I see

like, I’m eating an elephant head (katherine), Tuesday, 2 April 2019 02:16 (five years ago) link

I don't think I can recall spotting a release date on an album cover before. (the art's on Apple Music now, so it seems to be official)

Simon H., Tuesday, 2 April 2019 02:35 (five years ago) link

that feels like cheating since it's actually *named* for the release date, but sure, fair point.

Simon H., Tuesday, 2 April 2019 05:00 (five years ago) link

i made that joke in the other thread

it is possible to change a cover before release date it’s called metadata
