I was in sunnyside monday night and totally thinking how the 7 seems better than most lines right now. That is a total Final Destination picture.

The N, W going up into astoria has been having all of the stations completely refurnished. My station is missing the stairs going up right now. I swear it sways a crazy amount now when a large vehicle goes by.

That tweet/chart combo is a tad misleading. He refers to the whole "capital budget" but the chart only reflects expansion programs within the budget. In reality it's more like 75% of the capital budget goes to NYC transit (which may still be out of whack, but not nearly to the degree suggested there).

Some kind of would-be Raahsan Roland Kirk keeps blowing a whistle on the 7 train.

feel like this post is not gonna go over well but I read this and was... not overly impressed with the framing of it. very squalor-porn, some questionable details. like, if you're going to write about a bunch of subway stations in harlem and the bronx to contrast with times square and long island city, it might be a good idea to reach for different metaphors than "the monkey habitat at the zoo"

yeah, that whole pieces flippant vibe was enraging. if anything the NYT should be doing an expose on how the MTA's lack of bathrooms leads to people pissing and shitting on platforms and in cars.

what's the restroom situation in other major subways? i honestly don't recall encountering them when i lived in dc and montreal or visiting elsewhere

i don't even know what a good solution would be -- maybe one of those canister-type things in european cities that basically hose everything down after each use? people are truly incredible savages in public bathrooms, as i learned working retail

In japan it is exceptionally good but almost everything bathroom related in japan is on another plane, including not being a savage in the bathroom. Acceptable here in Melbourne although not a lot of provision in most stations. London is non-existent.

OTM japanese public bathrooms in the metro/train stations are unreal.

I only hate the people with noise cancelers/loud headphones on the subway because they don't get the fuck out of the way when you yell at them to.

And I would never wear them while moving in the city because I don't want to die that way.

i am okay with dying that way i guess? it's been an adjustment and i don't leave them on all the time but it alleviates the nonstop intrusion of the world into every goddamn moment and turns the train from a traveling asylum back into a conveyance. I'm aware it may ultimately be a problem to be a true disconnected bystander but i feel like i may also have avoided several confrontations because i genuinely can't hear the guy cursing at everyone in the car, so I don't have to deal with it.
