that's why music with vocals is only good 30%-40% of the time.

DOUBLIN` DOWN BITCHES

i think Tonight's the Night gets a lot more notice because of its supposed autobiographical slant but it's not an autobiographical album, it just references a guy he knew in a couple songs (the same song really) and turns it into a rumination on death.

music with lyrics is for children

The solipsistic view of art where it can only be understood through "identification" leaves no room for expansion of horizons, also it's deeply patronising to both artists and audience.

there's an old big star thread where someone says they sound like kiss, that was a way weirder opinion than just thinking big star are bad

if this is the case, the author needs to consider another vocation.đŸ‘đŸ»

Big Star are terrible except for 'Holocaust' and (especially) 'Kanga Roo'.

To paraphrase something a soundguy once said about my own band, "They sound like a box of cereal."

Amen. I like Teenage Fanclub and the theme from That 70s Show much better than Big Star.

B-b-but the theme from That 70s Show IS Big Star.

I love Big Star and Teenage Fanclub but Cheap Trick is way better than both

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 21 February 2019 23:42 (five years ago) link

Hm, Big Star vs Cheap Trick is tough. I def prefer the original "In the Street". Might take the first two Big Star albums over any given Cheap Trick album. Cheap Trick rock me harder but Big Star give me ~feelings~ in a way that Cheap Trick don't quite get to.

If this setup/punchline was serendipitous (and not somehow coordinated), many +++'s

if the music you make isn't mostly autobiographic, it's trash. worthless.

Props on the controp, I'm a little tilted now. This is the wrongest opinion that has ever wronged.

a Stalin Stale Ale for me, please (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 22 February 2019 13:25 (five years ago) link

music with lyrics is for children

My 6 year old daughter whenever I put some music on at home: "Is someone going to start singing?"
Me: "No"
Daughter: "Then I don't want to hear it"

some of us saw the tec on tour with Large Professor xpost

fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Friday, 22 February 2019 14:31 (five years ago) link

anyway, my opinion on lyrics in music is that in 90% of cases music is better if you don't pay attention to the lyrics

silverfish, Friday, 22 February 2019 14:36 (five years ago) link

Agree with silverfish. There aren't many good lyricists out there, and "autobiographical" lyrics are the hardest to do well.

Man I know I probably bang on about this too much but Stereolab's transition from "perfect simple dual-vocal Neu! tribute band with communism" into "terrifyingly twee and overly complicated The Free Design tribute band with jazz hands" is the biggest bummer I can think of. I cannot imagine getting listening to anything they recorded after Emperor Tomato Ketchup for pleasure. It is such a bummer! I have never heard a band go so pivot so suddenly from "perfect" to "zany"

brimstead, Friday, 1 March 2019 01:35 (five years ago) link

they were more twee early on anyways

brimstead, Friday, 1 March 2019 01:35 (five years ago) link

agree. I like both versions of the band, I just don't think they had the songwriting ability to do morricone / cool jazz as well as they did the neu indie rock stuff, which takes more of a conceptual commitment than songwriting chops

macropuente (map), Friday, 1 March 2019 02:28 (five years ago) link

I honestly can’t determine if “they don’t have the range as songwriters” or if my own personal taste favours monolithic two-chord monuments to human synchronicity (which mirrors the sentiment of the lyrical content) which effectively mars my capacity to appreciate their subsequent pivot to kindergarten rock
