Aw man Douglas :( Get well soon little lad.

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 21 February 2019 16:36 (five years ago) link

apparently Labs have a higher propensity for scavenging and swallowing things than other types of doogie. When he's better I'm only taking him out on a muzzle because he literally tries to eat everything, and some sick bassa has been scattering poisoned food around the park. Probably some knuckle dragging troglodyte from the rugby club ლ(ಠ_ಠლ)

calzino, Thursday, 21 February 2019 16:45 (five years ago) link

my last Lab was quite sensible in that he'd chew through everything, but wouldn't swallow stuff.

calzino, Thursday, 21 February 2019 16:47 (five years ago) link

Yeah, I once knew a black lab who chomped through a rotting sheep’s carcass and then puked maggots all over the carpet. She also had her head in the dishwasher half a second after you opened it, to lick the dirty plates.

Madchen, Thursday, 21 February 2019 17:35 (five years ago) link

Glad he’s on the mend!

calzino, Thursday, 21 February 2019 20:12 (five years ago) link

I'm really sorry to hear about your dog, m bison. That's awful for anyone, especially a kid. :-/

Karl Malone, Thursday, 21 February 2019 21:59 (five years ago) link

yeah, im just glad i was the one who found him and not my wife -- who had this dog before we ever met -- or son. it was def his time, tho. he had already been losing his hearing and vision, and the last couple of months he was not the same dog. he didn't seem to be in pain, but his energy was v v low and he just looked like he was winding down.

carne asada's dog is so cute!

i moved into dog friendly, secure housing in october and the urge to adopt a dog is strong as hell. i am going to wait until i have some savings however as i already have a cat and i definitely can't afford potentially two unexpected veterinary bills coming in at the same time, and i wouldn't feel comfortable without a safety net in that respect.

carne asada that is premium grade soft and sweet wet dog nose there. what a pal!

This has been my line of thinking too (minus the cat). I've wanted a dog for years but I know I won't be able to afford a steep vet bill.

Rod Steel (musicfanatic), Friday, 22 February 2019 20:42 (five years ago) link

I can't afford steep vet bills and if I was reliant on them my pup would be in very bad shape or dead rn. I can't praise what the PDSA do enough.

calzino, Friday, 22 February 2019 20:46 (five years ago) link

my wife has us on some pet insurance that is surprisingly affordable and came in handy when our old dog got sick , it covered a fair share of the bills.

that is extremely 3rd Grade Yearbook smile, i love it

Karl Malone, Friday, 22 February 2019 20:50 (five years ago) link

if i get another animal, i'm going to get pet insurance asap. the pre-existing conditions bullshit is definitely still a thing with animals. by the time we found out my dog had hip dysplasia, there was no way we could get insurance.

Karl Malone, Friday, 22 February 2019 20:51 (five years ago) link

Douglas is on WW2 sized rations of boiled chicken and rice until his intestine recovers, but his appetite has completely returned. When I put the bowl down it is like like watching a whizzing blur of piranhas on a feeding frenzy, it's so funny.

calzino, Friday, 22 February 2019 21:19 (five years ago) link

the labrador appetite is a thing to behold

the labrador appetite is a thing to behold

We fostered a young black lab for a few months, and he managed to eat the best part of a 12 kg bag of dog food. Like, he just rammed that stuff down his gullet double-quick until he was completely misshapen. We had a trip to the vets at 11pm on a bank holiday. He was so stuffed with food, she was afraid it would rot inside him before he could break it down. So she knocked him out and manually worked that food through his system. Liquid paraffin poured in one end, literal punching of his stomach to work it into the food, then out the other end it came. It took an hour to clear him. We had to sleep in the living room with the back door open so he could continue the process.

Next morning, he was STARVING. You never met such a hungry dog in your life.

trishyb, Saturday, 23 February 2019 10:08 (five years ago) link

not really funny for the dog .. but lool! There is something quite comic about their grim obsession with food. My last Lab used to plot raids on the bin. He'd always be watching what went in and mount a knock the bin over and grab and run raid later. Obv this decreased in frequency as he got older, but the old dog still had a few tricks in him.

our surviving dog was breathing weirdly, so we took him into the vet and...he probably has cancer and only a few months left, if that. sheesh.

m bison, that's all awful. I'm so sorry.

Mince Pramthwart (James Morrison), Sunday, 24 February 2019 23:09 (five years ago) link

Allegedly Labradors have genetically lost the trigger in your stomach/brain that tells you that you're full. Poor buggers are ALWAYS hungry.

Mince Pramthwart (James Morrison), Sunday, 24 February 2019 23:10 (five years ago) link

Perhaps that is partly why they are so trainable as sniffers/guide dogs etc, in the sense that the reward means so much more to them than other doogies!

put dog #2 (simon) down last night. he deteriorated so quickly after dog 1 (charlie) died last week. he was was mostly chipper this week, though, until i got home last night and he couldn't pick his head up without discomfort or pain.

you know who deserves sitewide mod privileges? (m bison), Friday, 1 March 2019 12:27 (five years ago) link

i took this one a lot harder. partly because i thought we had more time with him and had far less time to prepare for his passing than the other one. partly because i picked him out when we first got him and spent the lion's share of time with him. he could be a difficult dog at times; he was a shelter rescue and he was big on chewing stuff he wasn't supposed to and pissing in the house all the time when we weren't home. but he was also very loving and protective.

you know who deserves sitewide mod privileges? (m bison), Friday, 1 March 2019 12:31 (five years ago) link

anyway, this is the first time in maybe 25 years -- not counting the year i was out of town for college -- that i don't have a pet in my house.
