Yes, this is true, it's just another way to present the same data.

I don't want to vote for 119 different categories

I don't mean for the voting, just for the results.

Quentin Crisp's "Stop The Music For A Minute" is a solid choice for any compilation, but putting it anywhere apart from right at the end is just terrible sequencing

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 15:40 (five years ago) link

xxp that's the 3rd time Diamond Day has been nominated, CTRL-F people

sleeve, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 15:41 (five years ago) link

How about instead of ranking 77-1 or w/e we could have the highest-scoring track 0:01 long, 0:02 long, etc.?

i like that idea but it might cause some confusion for people viewing the results (for example, the 11th place track would say 0:11 long, but it would actually be 1:42, or whatever)

but also, leee already suggested a fun idea for the roll-out of the results...don't know how to describe it without blowing it, but it'll be fun!

For the 2:00 side poll, Elvis Costello - Mystery Dance.

On Spotify, this clocks in at 1:36 (the album version; are there others?)

Timothée Charalambides (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 15:52 (five years ago) link

The Knife - High School Poem (1:24)
Radiohead - you never wash up after yourself (1:44)
Idlewild - You've lost your way (1:30)

No way! It's perfect for a middle song - you're stopping the music for a minute.

emil.y, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 16:24 (five years ago) link

(Speaking from years and years of putting it on compilation tapes for people)

emil.y, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 16:24 (five years ago) link

Also, I was really looking forward to this but am feeling quite overwhelmed by the prospect now, there are so many songs. I know they're short but I also feel like a lot of people have just dumped every short song they can think of onto the list, so it's not just the best cool short things but every track by every band who regularly write short songs.

emil.y, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 16:26 (five years ago) link

^^^^^^^this ffs

imago, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 16:47 (five years ago) link

seriously think we should lock this thread and begin again with a nomination limit

imago, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 16:48 (five years ago) link

obviously I appreciate the hard work KM has put himself in for but it could be a lot less hard for him and all of us with a few more rules

imago, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 16:49 (five years ago) link

uh oh poll police, nothing to see here guv

as the wielder of ultimate power i reject this idea

it will be ok! it's a lot of songs! it's ok to just skim through them and pick the ones you know. you're not legally obligated to listen to every nominated song and formulate the all-time perfect list. you ARE legally obligated to listen to some good music and pick your faves, potentially in an ordered list, and to have fun doing it

Disagree! He's calling for all must to stop, now, nothing can follow that, surely.

Agree! Dumping 5+ tracks from one band is really not on, why not choose the best 2 or 3? Can anyone really deal with a 1000+ song playlist to get through?

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 16:55 (five years ago) link

and i will have fun suing everyone who doesn't have fun after this is all over

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 16:55 (five years ago) link

I am morally obligated to try to listen to everything though!

I just think having too many songs that people don't really love dilutes the whole experience, but fine idk

imago, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 16:57 (five years ago) link

it's possible that i am more easygoing about this than most people, but that is the consequence of Leee officially handing over the flaming sword of pollrunning authority. as i sliced my tongue open and felt the searing heat blend in with the rivers of blood running down my throat, i knew that it would not be easy. but i am determined to make sure that it is fun

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 16:59 (five years ago) link

i DO agree that people should not nominate songs that they're not going to seriously consider voting for. definitely agree with that. but i think that's an implied rule for every nominations thread, right? starting it over will just result in lower participation, plus a side-argument about whether or not starting over was the correcting thing to do.

so i do declare, from this point on, please just nominate songs you actually like. as i mentioned in section 19 of my multivolume Q&A (the first of a planned quadrilogy), it's not a fucking list thread ffs (though it is, technically, but you know what i mean)

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 17:01 (five years ago) link

how many tracks can we vote for again?

sleeve, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 17:10 (five years ago) link

tbd, but seems like consensus is leaning toward 50

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 17:12 (five years ago) link

Should be able to vote for 99 minutes so if your songs are EXTRA short you have more votes

i'm just kidding this is a bad idea

they're not booing you, sir, they're shouting "Boo'd Up" (Will M.), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 17:15 (five years ago) link

Buffy Sainte-Marie - Cripple Creek (1.50)
Odetta - Come a Lady's Dream (1.48)

Timothée Charalambides (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 17:16 (five years ago) link

also your number one song should be worth one point, and your 50th-ranked song should be worth 0.02 points so all of the scores are lil baby scores

i'm so helpful today

they're not booing you, sir, they're shouting "Boo'd Up" (Will M.), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 17:16 (five years ago) link

not a bad idea Will M! ;) (leee mentioned something similar)

Karl 50 sounds good

I stand by my 80 nominations but I could probably cut 30 of them since I wouldn't be able to vote for them anyway

let me know if you want an edited list - also, some of those tracks aren't on Spotify

sleeve, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 17:18 (five years ago) link

i haven't gotten to your nomnoms yet, sleeve. but yeah, how about cut them down to 50 and repost your list below. when i go through more of the list tonight i'll just skip your post above

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 17:22 (five years ago) link

Disagree! He's calling for all must to stop, now, nothing can follow that, surely.

Iirc the last words are "AND DIE" so I always put something suitably doomy afterwards. Though a particularly peppy upbeat pop song could be a good contrast/FU Crisp move.

emil.y, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 17:23 (five years ago) link

I definitely don't think we should restart the poll or anything, and a lot of stuff I think of as filler *will* be someone else's fave, I think I was more just expressing trepidation about dealing with it. I guess I'll pay more attention to the repping phase when voting opens than I will spend time trying to listen to the uber-list.

xpost yeah, i'm with you there emil.y . my approach is just going to be to take the time to listen to each individual artist. but when it comes to bands that have 20 different songs listed or something, i don't feel the need to go through every single one (unless i worship them, like Wire) so i'll just skip to the next thing i'm interested in.

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 17:30 (five years ago) link

can't believe there's no ivor cutler nommed yet, but he has about 7,000 pieces to choose from. help me someone plz!

I thought I saw an Ivor Cutler nom earlier, but if not then I am also surprised. Last.fm lists 'I'm Going In a Field' as exactly 2:00, though, and the only youtube I can see is 2:10.

emil.y, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 18:24 (five years ago) link

Ivor Cutler - I Think Very Deeply (0:54)

Damn, I was just about to nominated 71 songs all titled "Intro" but now I can't with you guys ruining all the fun.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 19:26 (five years ago) link

FWIW, I "actually like" (a lot!) all the songs I nominated; including the single-artist multiples. (There probably should have been a "one track per artist" rule, but I wasn't gonna handcuff myself unilaterally!)
