Vol 4: GOAT

Neil S, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 09:41 (five years ago) link

Either On the Corner or Exile on Main St..

pomenitul, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 09:45 (five years ago) link

You may also have heard of this band called YES. They put out a pretty good record that year.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 09:47 (five years ago) link

Definitely won't be voting for a Black Sabbath LP this time. Voting Foxtrot.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 09:58 (five years ago) link

Fecking tough, this one.

Wee boats wobble but they don't fall down (Tom D.), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 10:27 (five years ago) link

"On The Corner" over Big Star, and that's a very recent change.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 10:31 (five years ago) link

Wolf City over Roforofo Fight

"On The Corner" over Big Star Can, and that's a very recent change.

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 10:58 (five years ago) link

Some excellent albums but fewer that I'm truly over the moon about. I think maybe I just haven't dug sufficiently deeply into '72? Must rectify.

My gut response is one of the Ornette albums. They're both phenomenal.

I had no idea you were such a Krautrock fan.

― Wee boats wobble but they don't fall down (Tom D.),

for about 25 years. Was tough tracking it down before Napster though

Friedrich B. Neechy (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 12:25 (five years ago) link

and ftr I just don't like the band Yes

Friedrich B. Neechy (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 12:26 (five years ago) link

Well, we agree on that, at least.

Wee boats wobble but they don't fall down (Tom D.), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 12:41 (five years ago) link

can't not vote for Ege Bamyasi here. but Faust So Far is a close second. always loved that album. "No Harm" is still one of the most exciting tracks in my collection.

I do agree that not including Close to the Edge is pretty odd given the other stuff on here. That's my favorite of '72, hands down. I still love ELP's Trilogy as well.

frogbs, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 14:50 (five years ago) link

Al Green is usually the correct answer for any '70s albums, so that.

Jazzbo, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 14:54 (five years ago) link

I just dont like Yes!

And you all know as the years go on a certain other band whom I hate wont be appearing that is beloved by many people.

Friedrich B. Neechy (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 14:56 (five years ago) link

but hey, you cant like everything

Friedrich B. Neechy (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 14:57 (five years ago) link

Neechy: it's only this morning occurring to me that the Nite-Liters, an early '70s instrumental R&B/funk combo similar to many of the acts among your favorite, have been so consistently absent from these polls that I wonder if you're familiar with them? Because if you aren't I would recommend them most highly.

A functioning gazebo made of Candlebox cassingles (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 15:07 (five years ago) link

The era seems to have been a major purple patch, though i think I would have started in '68. Not sure where I'd cut off. THough think 73 seems to be the end of that run for a lot of people. Might be influenced by the idea that pubnk was the major grond changer so the years before it get swept away as needing to be before the year zero. I think there were still some great things coming out in '74 and '75 that don't fit into that model.
& that model is probably artificial, though it did see a whole bunch of new people recognising they could pick up instruments and do it for themselves. That might have initially been suggested by interest caused by the release of Nuggets in '72 though and a return to basic hook ridden non meandering self importance.

Or maybe p[eople were already doing things like that in patches across teh globe and that is what gives us things like rocket from The Toimbs, Simply Saucer and the avant-garage or whatever you want to call that.

Stevolende, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 15:10 (five years ago) link

old lunch, I have not but will defo check them out, thanks!

Friedrich B. Neechy (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 15:11 (five years ago) link

Stevolende I'll be doing lists up to 79, so we can see the changes then.
I wont do 80s polls as my tastes will differ from ilm.

Would be nice if someone else did a top 50 for every year of the 80s and polled them though.

Friedrich B. Neechy (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 15:13 (five years ago) link

Exile, my favorite record by anyone

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 15:17 (five years ago) link

Also Sandy Denny's "Sandy" is a personal favorite

Great record. From these, it’s between Argus and Can’t Buy a Thrill for me.

o. nate, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 15:21 (five years ago) link

Roforofo Fight, my favorite Fela.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 15:22 (five years ago) link

Voted for Skies of America but a lot of great stuff here.

silent as a seashell Julia (Sund4r), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 15:37 (five years ago) link

xp
I voted for Gentleman in the earlier poll, but every time I get to the Fela entry on the list, I'm tempted. This time I somewhat randomly voted for Popol Vuh with Can and Davis being the closest contenders. Black Unity is rad too.

Such an amazing list, though I'm not the biggest fan of Transa. But Expresso 2222, what a record!

― Frederik B

Going through it, I was definitely a little doubtful that all those came out in the same year (and past polls have shown my itunes to be suspect). Transa was my entry point into Tropicalia/MPB, so I'll always have a soft spot for it, but Expresso is pure joy! The Arthur Verocai album rushomancy listed is great too, and while I can't claim to have ever fully loved it Veloso's Araçá Azul is notable.

Oor Neechy: you should poll all the discoveries you made as a result of these polls when you're done.

rob, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 15:54 (five years ago) link

yeah that's a good idea

Friedrich B. Neechy (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 16:03 (five years ago) link

I like these polls for making me scroll through my collection by year. Now I'm listening to Congregacion's "Viene" (from '72). They're Chilean psych-folk, the "folk" being Andean and it's mournful and melancholy rather than sunny and dippy. I picked this up back when RARE PSYCH reissues were coming out every few minutes, but unlike a lot of disappointing junk I bought then, this album is quite good so long as hippy flutes and bird sounds don't bother you.

rob, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 16:06 (five years ago) link

Roxy Music for me, a life-changer. Such an audacious debut, such a whirl of aural and visual ideas.

Dial Alexa, derelict! (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 16:14 (five years ago) link

It's possible that I'm presently overrating Skies of America because, y'know, events but it feels to me like the most perfectly frank aural interpretation of the American experience that I've maybe ever heard. Like an album of patriotic anthems left to warp in a sunlit and trash-strewn gutter.

Pink Moon.👍🏻

will need to remember I already did 1973 so 1974 will be next (and eno voters can rejoice unless its proven it was out 73)

Friedrich B. Neechy (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 18:50 (five years ago) link

maybe by the 79 poll we will have resolved it

Friedrich B. Neechy (Oor Neechy), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 18:51 (five years ago) link

There's only 1 #1 Record.

I may have been tempted to vote for #1 record if not because as Good as it is, radio city just smokes it
I go back and forth on these two - Radio City is great and has September Gurls, but #1 Record is more varied and has Give Me Another Chance. Most days I even like The India Song.

(But yes, there's a pretty good chance I'll vote Radio City in the 1974 poll too.)

dorsalstop, Thursday, 21 February 2019 10:57 (five years ago) link

i cant really choose between the 2

Friedrich B. Neechy (Oor Neechy), Thursday, 21 February 2019 13:37 (five years ago) link

Given my vote to Ethiopian Knights

Not liking Close to the Edge is ridiculous.
from that year in Brazil, I'll also mention the Tom Zé s/t, which I prefer to his later classics.

Wishbone Ash are pretty important too in the development of heavy metal with their twin guitar leads that pretty much every 70s metal band inc Judas Priest say influenced them.

On a cold winter’s night, world weary rock gods find a clearing in the woods
so as to build a fire and rest and drink some wine. They drink and smoke and
unfold stories of their long journey of conquests and mishaps.

nicky lo-fi, Tuesday, 26 February 2019 14:34 (five years ago) link

It's not wholly 'perfect' but three or four brilliant songs is enough so going with my first thought Wolf City, also because it probably won't get too many votes in this grouping.
