for the record i am not generally one to stan for yes but having "foxtrot" on this poll but not "close to the edge", which is the one record of theirs that has consistently top-notch writing, is pure bs

Voted for the Stones in one of the earlier polls. So it’s Big Star over Stevie and Bowie.

Some excellent albums but fewer that I'm truly over the moon about. I think maybe I just haven't dug sufficiently deeply into '72? Must rectify.

My gut response is one of the Ornette albums. They're both phenomenal.

can't not vote for Ege Bamyasi here. but Faust So Far is a close second. always loved that album. "No Harm" is still one of the most exciting tracks in my collection.

I do agree that not including Close to the Edge is pretty odd given the other stuff on here. That's my favorite of '72, hands down. I still love ELP's Trilogy as well.

Neechy: it's only this morning occurring to me that the Nite-Liters, an early '70s instrumental R&B/funk combo similar to many of the acts among your favorite, have been so consistently absent from these polls that I wonder if you're familiar with them? Because if you aren't I would recommend them most highly.

The era seems to have been a major purple patch, though i think I would have started in '68. Not sure where I'd cut off. THough think 73 seems to be the end of that run for a lot of people. Might be influenced by the idea that pubnk was the major grond changer so the years before it get swept away as needing to be before the year zero. I think there were still some great things coming out in '74 and '75 that don't fit into that model.
& that model is probably artificial, though it did see a whole bunch of new people recognising they could pick up instruments and do it for themselves. That might have initially been suggested by interest caused by the release of Nuggets in '72 though and a return to basic hook ridden non meandering self importance.

Or maybe p[eople were already doing things like that in patches across teh globe and that is what gives us things like rocket from The Toimbs, Simply Saucer and the avant-garage or whatever you want to call that.

I voted for Gentleman in the earlier poll, but every time I get to the Fela entry on the list, I'm tempted. This time I somewhat randomly voted for Popol Vuh with Can and Davis being the closest contenders. Black Unity is rad too.

Going through it, I was definitely a little doubtful that all those came out in the same year (and past polls have shown my itunes to be suspect). Transa was my entry point into Tropicalia/MPB, so I'll always have a soft spot for it, but Expresso is pure joy! The Arthur Verocai album rushomancy listed is great too, and while I can't claim to have ever fully loved it Veloso's Araçá Azul is notable.

I like these polls for making me scroll through my collection by year. Now I'm listening to Congregacion's "Viene" (from '72). They're Chilean psych-folk, the "folk" being Andean and it's mournful and melancholy rather than sunny and dippy. I picked this up back when RARE PSYCH reissues were coming out every few minutes, but unlike a lot of disappointing junk I bought then, this album is quite good so long as hippy flutes and bird sounds don't bother you.

Roxy Music for me, a life-changer. Such an audacious debut, such a whirl of aural and visual ideas.

It's possible that I'm presently overrating Skies of America because, y'know, events but it feels to me like the most perfectly frank aural interpretation of the American experience that I've maybe ever heard. Like an album of patriotic anthems left to warp in a sunlit and trash-strewn gutter.

Listening to Dr. John's Gumbo today, and it occurred to me that I've listened to that more than anything on this list, including the Roxy Music album I voted for.

I have been keeping a couple of Excel spreadsheets and an Access database I built years ago. Same setup tracks my Cds and LPs. It started on an old Windows 3.1 box.
