You guys need some irl drummers :)
I don’t feel too strongly about it honestly, I just feel strongly about the act of asking for permission in general.

the james brown estate is probably going to tell you to fuck off

Well then, I can play that song in a jokey style without the drums: https://soundcloud.com/austin-anderson-337534977

I'd love an IRL drummer but everyone I know is in like 3 bands!

i could stand to be in at least one more band tbh
every time i think something is getting off the ground, it stalls

Xxxxp thanks dog latin! I’ve always loved dance music, used to DJ, etc. it’s super-fun to be making a new type of music (aside from the band I’m in with shakey). The tracks we’ve put out so far are more like b-sides. Im excited about some of the other tracks even more. We got an amazing saxophonist to play on one track, and I have a couple of breakbeat tracks that I’m saving for a later release.

A very old song, reassessed.

New track for 4/20. I did the dark pads and Streichfett arpeggiator on this.

We've got a Valentine's Day track too!

Feeling this one!

So I've been making my own tracks for a while now, and you can hear em here - https://soundcloud.com/pluwa. Not really sure how to describe them (which I know sounds super-pretentious), some are a bit Balearicy or ambient, some are a bit moodier...

Thank you for listening!

I like your stuff too, paolo. It's very skeletal and atmospheric.

my bandcamp was getting out of hand, so streamlined my it over the weekend. now the singles and non-long playing stuff have their own artist listings:

the proper austinato artist page is still there; less massive now though.

[url=https://austinatosingles.bandcamp.com/album/second-wind-for-jamie]this is the latest thing; was posted yesterday.[url]

I think I (with former (?) ILXor ESOJ have written a bit of a non-standard pop hit, and a really nice video was made for it

paolo, Monday, 3 June 2019 17:40 (one year ago) link

S-, that is indeed a very beautiful thing you have done there!

new release from me: 'brooke's theme.'

also, i've been posting covers and oddball stuff on my soundcloud. apparently i do prince-sampling happy mondays covers now.. i'm actually pretty okay with this.

really lovely stuff, austin!

the 4th track was playing out of my crappy laptop speakers (sorry!) and for a second i thought i was listening to cleaners to venus!

you are a saint for listening!

thank you for the feedback — i am always simultaneously embarrassed and honored when my music gets compared to, like, actual music. i have never heard of cleaners from venus before; a quick google tells me that i have some investigating to do this weekend. double thanks!

Some new weird stuff from me:

EZ Snappin, Friday, 5 July 2019 20:13 (one year ago) link

Cool stuff, guys! I've been working on a bunch of electronic tracks, just need to master a bunch of stuff before putting it out as Balboa Park.

esby - I made a trip-hop version of your track that I'm pretty into, but I'm waiting on my cousin to finish some rapping for it, for which I have high hopes.

I've been having a blast with Max4Live MIDI LFOs in Live, attaching them to all sorts of stuff. My latest fave is attaching a random LFO to an arpeggiator Type parameter, so that the arp type changes every couple of bars. This makes for some neat, ever-changing apreggiations.

DJI, Monday, 8 July 2019 18:28 (one year ago) link

New recording of a classical guitar duo I wrote last year. The two guitars are in different tunings and mostly play harmonics, with some investigation of the acoustic effects you can get from slightly detuned pitches:

I like that one, I love harmonics and muted string scratches. Also, you probably don't want to hear that it would make good horror soundtrack music (to the laymen's ears).

change display name (Jordan), Friday, 19 July 2019 20:12 (eleven months ago) link

I take that as a compliment, actually. I like a lot of horror film scores.

Horror soundtracks are the greatest!!

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Friday, 19 July 2019 21:54 (eleven months ago) link

Ok cool, I just assumed that anyone ensconced in the world of 12 tone/new music/etc would be sick of people hearing their compositions as dissonant horror movie music :)

good enough for colin stetson!

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Friday, 19 July 2019 22:12 (eleven months ago) link

i think horror music is the best. i even started a thread about it! horror soundtracks

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Friday, 19 July 2019 22:14 (eleven months ago) link

Ha, there was a new person at orchestral rehearsal tonight who I'm suspecting is not that used to playing new music. At the end, she commented that "it sounded a bit like a horror movie soundtrack". I asked "the last piece?" She replied "all of them".

All along there is the sound of feedback (Sund4r), Sunday, 21 July 2019 02:43 (eleven months ago) link

Sund4r, I love that stuff. It reminds me of some of that really odd "American primitive" stuff from the late 70s. There was an album by Peter Finger that I recall having a lot of that really sparse harmonic exploration in it. I have no idea about the logistics of that stuff, but I absolutely love the tonality of it. I don't think of it as "horror film" music (probably because I don't watch many films and never have); more like "overcast sky" music — which is a mood I like very much.

As for me, everything else is gone, but don't worry.

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Tuesday, 23 July 2019 15:40 (eleven months ago) link

wow Peter Finger has got to be one of the grossest names I've heard in a while

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Tuesday, 23 July 2019 15:47 (eleven months ago) link

Oh wow, thanks. Glad people are enjoying it. I love a lot of American Primitive guitar so that connection is cool. Don't know Peter Finger, though, so thanks for the link.

Although I can be very affected by instrumental music, what I get from it often has to do with abstract sensations and images, not necessarily something that I can associate directly with specific and concrete irl experiences, unless, of course, I have been listening to something for a long time, when I do connect the music to memories. I'm happy to see listeners make connections to moods or scenarios that mean something to them.

I just listened to "don't worry" and enjoyed it. Pleasant mood and grooves, nice guitar tones.

doing the soundtrack for another exhibition tonight, this one is titled "The Aesthetics Of Decay." I don't know if I'm going to do another collaboration like this again - they're a wonderful bunch but their vision is a lot darker and bleaker than the music I want to be making. But I'm really happy with how this has turned out - it would have been really easy and obvious to make a Ben Frost/Tim Hecker rip-off, but instead I've made 24 minutes of spacious ambient music that sounds like this.

boxedjoy, Friday, 26 July 2019 12:17 (eleven months ago) link

That sounds cool, love all the bell tones and delays, and that it's not all drones and pads.
