Whiffs (1975), a slight variation on the style

trying to guess the plot of dirty tricks based on the poster. coming up blank.

andrew m., Friday, 15 February 2019 15:22 (five years ago) link

at some point i looked it up... i want to say kate jackson is an aspiring singing star and there's probably like one scene where they're in a bathtub together. the rest i have no idea.

Don't forget they were all painted by George Washington.

zama roma ding dong (Eric H.), Friday, 15 February 2019 15:53 (five years ago) link

George Washington / "Dirty Tricks" = gotta be Rich Little doing a Nixon impression in there somewhere.

who's the one all the way in the back, center?

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Thursday, 21 February 2019 19:15 (five years ago) link

That's Buttigieg pulling up the rear.

"Knock, Knock..." also plausible as the title of a forgettable comedy from this period, nice work.

Cory Booker in that drawing looks like Keegan Michael Key about to tell you about Liam Neesons

lots of blaxploitation film posters fit the bill

andrew m., Thursday, 21 February 2019 21:14 (five years ago) link

those have def been posted, in the thread's early days, but maybe not captioned. i watched "bingo long..." a few years back because of this thread!

dangit, i made that mistake with dirty tricks too. will be a better thread checker. but yeah, some older ones not captioned.

Between the Lines (1977). Pretty sure this has been posted but Ctrl-F didn't turn it up. Saw this movie tonight in a gorgeous restoration and it's a thumbs up. Pretty aimless and the ending is kinda frustrating ---- it definitely reads as a male-written script directed by a woman who's trying to tug it back towards really understanding her female cast ---- but there's a ton of good stuff in there, especially if you get a kind of warm fuzzy feeling from seeing 70s domestic and workplace interiors dressed to be maximally sloppy and piled up with books and papers and shit. Also Goldblum is already peak Goldblum.

I remember pointing out the Southside Johnny appearance.

Riding Tall (1974)

Final day for two rarely-screened '70s rodeo dramas: a beautiful Sony Archive 35mm print of Cliff Robertson's J.W. COOP (1971) plays tonight (Thursday) at 7:30pm paired with the not-on-dvd rarity RIDING TALL (1972) starring Andrew Prine at 9:50pm. pic.twitter.com/NsXCDkSwqv

(er, 1972 according to the tweet, 1974 based on posters online)

I went to that last night!

ebro the letter (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 15 March 2019 15:10 (five years ago) link

How was it?

Also, kind of a photo variation of busy/claustrophobic:

On this date 25 years ago, “The Paper,” a Ron Howard comedy starring Michael Keaton, Glenn Close, Marisa Tomei, Randy Quaid and Robert Duvall opened in theaters. pic.twitter.com/JvYjargBkZ

I dunno, this style of poster feels like the slicker 90s cousin to the busy/claustrophobic etc. I remember a lot of the Grisham movies having posters similar to this.

Timothée Charalambides (cryptosicko), Thursday, 11 April 2019 15:39 (five years ago) link

that one is neither busy nor does it contain caricature

blokes you can't rust (sic), Thursday, 11 April 2019 15:41 (five years ago) link

It is busy in the sense that a lot of actors faces are crammed into it. Like I said, the less fun 90s variant on what we're talking about here.

Timothée Charalambides (cryptosicko), Thursday, 11 April 2019 15:42 (five years ago) link

Another latter day parody of the style, this one is particularly dire:

The Pink Angels (1971). Huge, high-quality version here. Probably posted before without caption, what a piece of work. The Davis-esque artist is C. Bruce Steffenhagen, also responsible for:

I so want to pitch a coffee table book of the best of this thread one of these days...

I thought surely Kentucky Fried Movie would have one of these, but its poster was surprisingly tasteful.
