i like how in mario kart or tetris99 there's almost always a user named "dad" that i'm competing against

This looks like the most horrifically addictive form of Tetris.

useful tips for tetris99 players:

When your garbage blocks are the ones that push another player over the edge and into the game over screen, you’ll get credit for the kill with a “KO.” This is where Tetris 99 gets really interesting. Every KO counts as one “bit” of a badge. The first two bits gives you one full badge. After that, the number keeps going up: four bits for the second badge, eight bits for the third badge, and 16 bits for the fourth badge, which is the maximum number of badges that you can have.

These badges are crucial because each one increases how much garbage you can send to opponents: 25% more for the first badge, 50% more for the second, 75% more for the third, and 100% more for the fourth. You can get pretty far without them, but at some point when there are only a few players left, you’re going to be fighting an uphill battle if your opponents are dumping twice as much garbage on you as they’re getting in return.

While you earn a badge bit for each KO, you also get all the badges of the player you just defeated. As a result, you’ll want to target players who are either near death, or who have a lot of badges, or ideally both. Just like in a traditional battle royale like Fortnite or PUBG, you can pull off come-from-behind victories by taking out the right person at the right time and stealing all their power ups.

Finally, the garbage you send to other players and that they send to you doesn’t go into effect immediately. Instead, it’s on a timer and will show up on the left side of the screen, giving you a rough idea of how much is about to hit you. During these periods, any garbage you generate will just go toward canceling the incoming attacks. While it can be fun to try to play offensively, there’s also value in keeping your pieces stacked well enough that you can always pull out a tetris to defend if need be.

surprised there hasn't been some chatter on here about the rumored xbox/nintendo collab

https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2019/02/why-putting-xbox-games-on-switch-isnt-as-ridiculous-as-it-might-sound/

Here at Ars, we tend to be skeptical of the regularly recurring rumors that two major video game competitors are going to be merging or teaming up in some way. From the early 2000s whispers that Microsoft would buy a struggling Sega to suggestions that Apple should buy Nintendo, these rumors often reflect wishful thinking at least as much as actual insider knowledge.

That said, we're still intrigued by recent rumors that Microsoft could be bringing certain Xbox One games—and a version of its Xbox Game Pass subscription service—to the Nintendo Switch and other consoles.

As the current scuttlebutt has it, an Xbox app to be released for the Switch would let players with an Xbox Game Pass subscription play a selection of Xbox One games on Nintendo's hardware. High-end games would work on Nintendo's lower-end hardware thanks to streaming via Microsoft's recently announced Project xCloud. Meanwhile, Microsoft would also sell certain low-end first-party Xbox One games, like the Ori series, to the Switch directly, according to the rumors.

These latest reports originate with a video from Direct Feed Games, who cites "several" unnamed sources creating "teasing and hinting [that] has reached a point to which I can no longer ignore it." The Direct Feed Games channel is mainly known for extremely basic gameplay videos, though, and it has a spotty history of accurate rumor reporting. Last March, the channel confidently but incorrectly stated that "Call of Duty will come to Switch in 2018," for instance.

But Game Informer also cites its own sources as saying that Xbox Game Pass on Switch could be announced "this year." And the usually reliable Windows Central says that they've been "hearing for almost a year that Microsoft was aiming to put Xbox Game Pass on Nintendo Switch, and even PlayStation 4."

Karl Malone, Saturday, 23 February 2019 21:29 (five years ago) link

i'd believe it, Microsoft doesn't really seem to care about console exclusivity anymore as much as just selling their subscription service. they want to be gamer netflix

what's the best jrpg on switch? should i just wait for dq11?

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Sunday, 24 February 2019 20:11 (five years ago) link

consensus seems to be octopath traveler for the old school style action
DQXI looks amazing and you know what you're going to get

note that i haven't played either

Karl Malone, Sunday, 24 February 2019 20:13 (five years ago) link

i think i read a bit too much about octopath traveler before i got a switch and bought into the backlash. i should probably just get it b/c i like old grindy jrpgs

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Sunday, 24 February 2019 20:41 (five years ago) link

do you want turn based or action jrpg?

ciderpress, Sunday, 24 February 2019 21:32 (five years ago) link

DQXI is more old school than octopath gameplay wise, theres not really anything in it that couldn't have been in a 90s game other than the graphics. whereas octopath's combat system builds off of mechanics from more recent stuff like persona and bravely default, it feels a lot more modern to play even if the presentation is retro

ciderpress, Sunday, 24 February 2019 21:43 (five years ago) link

i think they're both good not great games but if you want a standard turn based jrpg they're the options

ciderpress, Sunday, 24 February 2019 21:49 (five years ago) link

theres also the actual best jrpg on the system, xenoblade 2, if youre open to something much weirder

ciderpress, Sunday, 24 February 2019 22:01 (five years ago) link

i will eventually play octopath. unfortuanately i will never play xenoblade due to the battle sounds/speech. holy shit, not for me. it's too bad because i've enjoyed the small bits of the xeno series that i've played

Karl Malone, Sunday, 24 February 2019 22:06 (five years ago) link

i prefer turn-based, but i'm open to weirder combat systems. a terrible aesthetic will ruin the game for me, though, which is why i'm hesitant to buy xenoblade 2. i suspect i will think DQXI is a great game. i love persona 5, played through a lot of it on a friend's ps4

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Sunday, 24 February 2019 23:05 (five years ago) link

dont think persona has much bearing on anything else here, its in a different school of jrpg

ciderpress, Sunday, 24 February 2019 23:24 (five years ago) link

Shin Megami Tensei 5 should be coming later this year, I think it is the only game from the initial Switch reveal that hasn't been released yet?
