i have my AL-only league's auction draft coming up this weekend. with 10-teams putting together a full roster can get a little daunting – and bidding for all-star caliber players can easily turn batshit.
been thinking about it non-stop all week, whereas i did literally no prep-work for the ilbb draft!

Seems like yahoo! got rid of roto leagues unless you run your own league, you can't just jump in and join an open league... or is H2H just that much more popular?

This includes 7 of the top 80 (yahoo pre-season rank) offensive players in a 5x5 league.

I want to take this opportunity to extol my pitching staff in an eight-team league I have with some friends who only watch Giants games.

Scherzer, Verlander, Kershaw, Bauer, Thor (he's been bad), and Paxton (someone dropped him!) are my vets, with Chris Paddack and Shane Bieber as the up-and-comers.

My offense is also good! I love it.

A manager in a league that I'm in says this week he may have his pitching stats zeroed out as he potentially won't hit the cutoff this week as games with his SPs keep getting PPD.

Yeah that was mentioned but it's a 10 manager league so he'd have to drop some heat.

...for example Jack Flaherty (#4 average pick overall in Yahoo!) has pitched exactly one game this season: July 24th which was exactly 2 weeks ago.

In my head to head league where I finished pretty much at the bottom, I finished 2nd overall (aggregate) in steals but went 1W-5L-1T.

i am in first place by two points right now in my brutally shallow AL only league and the guy in second has been overtaking me on and off for a month now.
in a desperate attempt to keep/gain points i have dropped both closers and all normal starters in favour of set-up (holds) guys and to hopefully not lose out on wins i am starting Skubel. which might be incredibly stupid since I can't afford to bloat my ERA

CJ Cron has been added/dropped 3x in one league already.

I was targeting Cron very intentionally in the ilx league but I also targeted Daniel Murphy and Ian Desmond when they first signed with the Rockies so...

love that bell and cron have come up in our various fantasy threads as guys who might be disappointing and i had them both written down as sleepers (and missed both in ilx, but it worked out)

my h2h points league team is weird and might be good? my keepers are nowhere near as good as others, we have a complicated system that makes some teams better for a couple of years (maybe i explained it before, i'll explain below this)

our keepers rules -- we look at the fantasypros rankings for batters on whatever day ends up being the "settle date" (usually the day after the super bowl) and those are the keeper costs -- so if they rank Mike Trout 1 he costs a first round, if he's ranked 11th or 19th he costs a 2nd, etc... and you have to make your 4 keepers fit into the picks you have for that year. However, you get discounts: we also have a "minors" system you can keep for free. the second you pull a player up and start him, his "timer" starts, and the next 3 years you can keep him at a 5/3/3 round discount. Also additionally you have one "bullet dodge" to keep any one player an additional one round later, in case you have a logjam.

So as you can see I have Eloy and Mountcastle as last-year-call-ups for my team, Devers is 2nd year I think (technically third, but we made a rule to not count 2019 as a year if you chose to bench a guy all season, which I did w/ Devers and Eloy). Olson was ranked in like the 6th round so he was a good deal. I had like 5 of the first 20 actual picks or something, but of course most of the good players were never even up as options. also yes we have team pitching, it's kinda nice! i took SD 3rd overall (the 1st overall pick was freeman, bc the guy who had him had too many good keepers but was picking first anyway so it's like he got a free keeper), 2nd pick was LAD and then I went SD. Picked a few good players in those first few rounds -- JD, Mondesi, Grish, Randy -- and then spent 3 rounds "picking" my keepers, so everyone after Randy was the second half of the draft. Took Kim knowing I'd probably call up Lux or Madrigal quickly this season, so you can imagine one of them is starting there. Royce Lewis with the asterisk because he'll move into my minors, drafted him to replace.

Presenter Mode is a welcome addition to drafts this year. I love those big ol' tiles

doing an espn mock draft and i can't believe they've gotten even worse. why the hell would you remove chat from a draft interface?

So my other league just drafted... AL only. Auction. Just added a new manager to bring the total to 9.
It lasted three hours and was batshit insane. Top players and regular, mid-draft types were going for a few bucks more than you’d expect - but once we started hitting the later-round players in a normal draft, and people started to panic, prices skyrocketed. Fringe set-up guys going for $12. I had to pay double the bag price for Plesac and Luzardo, who are my #1&2 starters. My catcher is Wilson Ramos. Gary Sanchez want for $22. I saw some shit tonight.

I could usually get a person or two talking about their rationalization for their picks.
Sometime I’d love to be able to messge people months later and be like “I TOLD YOU HIS REGRESSION WOULD BE UGLY!”

having one of those very frustrating "would be whipping everyone except the guy i'm facing" H2H weeks

would've ended the week tied in runs but my opponent had bohm lol

just an awful week, made a stupid drop because i was desperate to chase wins, at the point in the season where i have to tell myself to stop taking it seriously

Wish I had convinced the old timers in my old leagues to try a free form roster version - 26 roster spots, one at each position and five pitchers, fill the rest however you want.

I almost had that going with a small roster auction league (one at each position, DH, six pitchers) but it would have been interesting to see people strategize between dominating hitting or pitching or falling into the safe territory of ‘normal’ rosters.

Would the stats just have been 5x5?

Shah added a player pool into the web app, then realized he could access stats, too. There was no longer any reason to keep their league on Yahoo. And now they could choose new scoring categories that better reflected modern baseball thinking, swapping out batting average for on-base percentage. (Later versions would incorporate scoring based on the Wins Above Replacement metric, a sabermetric shibboleth.) They began to play on Shah’s site, naming the league after a player, Otto Neu, who appeared in one game for the St. Louis Browns in 1917 but never made a plate appearance or had a chance in the field.

xp - semi-standard 5x5, we did OPS, net steals, a reliever formula (holds plus 2X saves minus blown, I think?) and I think the stat service we used had FIP the last season we held leagues. There would also have to be some PA/IP minimums to keep people from having a 0.00 ERA with 6IP for the entire year.

i hate it! i've had such a bad week in both my H2H leagues, it's frustrating because i spent more time preparing for them than most years and then 90% of it just comes down to dumb luck

i think at the very least 2-week matchups should be the standard. one week is ridiculous. week 1 i got 10 SBs and lost. this week i got 3 SBs and won. it's stupid. and unless your league has very restrictive weekly IP limits, so much comes down to which owner gets more starts.

It's H2H so 10 categories per week. I went 2-8 week one then 2-8 week two. Mathematically I should be 6th or 7th but I am just getting incredibly unlucky losing ratio cats by tenths of percents and counting stat cats by a handful, if that.

So many external factors at play with weather, COVID team quarantines (even if they aren't on your team) on top of the usual rampant injuries, slow starts, etc.

need a shrink to tell me why i keep caring so deeply about a family league run by my cousin's husband who has been using admin powers to cheat for years. he just did it again today, even though he's already beating me 7-1-2. just flipped ohtani with urshela so he can get ohtani's SB and bring him a little closer in the one category i'm beating him in (why was he starting urshela over ohtani anyway??)

i don't even have any blood family in this anymore, just his relatives including his father and now his teenage son. his own son!

oh i accepted long ago i'm not gonna do anything about it, i don't think anything good would come of it and it would just make things weirder than they already are between me and an extended family i've always had a weird relationship with. i thought maybe he stopped after the ESPN redesign because he was scared it would be more obvious. i have screenshots if i ever decide to go nuclear. and it is all logged in the transactions, just a little hard to find. i've confronted him about it privately years ago and he just played dumb. i'm really curious if he does it when he matches up with son though.
