Bands whose fans were their own subculture

I think it often happens that there are subcultures with distinct looks and everything for whom a single band is THE band, and their look and general way-of-being is strongly based on the band in some way, but they're not as explicitly associated with the band as Juggalos (surprised nobody mentioned them itt yet!) and KISS army. In fact, sometimes it might be considered gauche to point out how much the subculture owes to the band (or even that the subculture exists). My wife's college friend group is basically defined by their devotion to Jimmy Eat World, but she gets really annoyed when I point it out!

Little known fact: The ICP have a pretty dedicated following. I believe they even go by a name. *googles* Juggalos, that's it.

I don't understand what's going on here. Maybe I forgot to mention Juggalos. Oh no wait... I did. Wow, I can't believe ICP aka Insane Clown Posse and their fans the Juggalos got mentioned so many times in this thread lol

Blues Traveler fans called themselves "Poppers" and you could frequently see them dressed as harmonicas, pre-internet days so there are no pics at hand

"down with the clown" is an example of the sort of catchphrase that band subcultures often generate (in this case, if you are "down with the clown," you are a Juggalo, and Juggalos are followers of the posse of "Insane Clowns" who make up the band Insane Clown Posse, often abbreviated as ICP).

That late 70s mod revival began with the Jam though, iirc, so they wouldn't have been mods if they hadn't been Jam fans.

If a man were truly insane, he would not have to serve in a clown posse. Yet applying not to serve in a clown posse proves that he is not insane (as it demonstrates his sanity); and so he must serve.

I believe that in the U.S. military this is referred to as "Catch Juggalo."

I dated a guy in college whose cousin was in the band Kix. A year or so after we broke up, he emailed me about going to a show where the audience sprayed midwestern soda with plastic toys and it was like, a thing, and everyone there were kinda the same, like, a subculture, and the band was called Insane Clown Posse. Pretty sure that was what they were called.

Relevant to this thread’s interests:

https://www.latimes.com/entertainment/music/la-et-ms-kiss-tour-20190216-story.html

”What is that thing that connects to the fans and the band? It's not just songs,” says Simmons, who turns 70 this summer. “It's sort of a gathering of the tribes, because it is culture. There's no reason to put KISS tattoos on your body and to name your children after our songs. There's this other much bigger idea that hovers above the band and the fans. There’s some connection to your life."

I call BS. The Wikipedia reference leads to an articlefrom 2012, which in turn mentions “Glamberts” with a link to a now-dead MTV.com page.

Also, 99.9999% of Dylan fans are not called, and do not call themselves, “Dylanologists” — I don’t care what some book reviewed by Janet Maslin in 2014 says.
