Algerian Goalie's friends: a defined subculture.

I was listening to some Dead over the weekend; it strikes me that Dead Heads are pretty relevant to this topic

yuh yuh (morrisp), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 18:37 (five years ago) link

not so relevant as fans of Insane Clown Posse. I believe they are called "Juggalos".

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 18:38 (five years ago) link

...and that's to say nothing of the progenitors of the Juggalo fanbase, the self-styled Insane Clown Posse, also known as the ICP.

frogbs, Wednesday, 13 February 2019 19:29 (five years ago) link

Sorry I had Urban Cookie Collective mixed up with The Insane Clown Posse

Are we purposely not mentioning The Insane Clown Posses? Weird omission if you ask me, lads.

no juggalos, no credibility

to be serious Suicidal Tendencies.

We were never Breeting Borting (President Keyes), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 20:35 (five years ago) link

In the early 80's when dangerous punk gangs such as the "L.A. Death Squad" and "Circle One Family" were running rampant, few of the gangs stood out as much as the Suicidals, who dressed like Cholos. Formed from punks who grew up and lived in the ghettos of Venice, Long Beach, Santa Monica, and other parts of LA.

Their name comes from the "Suicidal Tendencies" punk/thrash/crossover band from Venice. Mike Muir along with the rest of the band were known to dress like "Cholos" even though they were punks. The Suicidal gang color is blue, which leads most to think that at first glance they are Crips, but Suicidals have no association with Crips. For the Suicidals rarely contended with typical major race gangs such as Bloods, Crips, Surenos, Nortenos etc. since they are of a different caliber and Suicidals only fought with other punk gangs.

is It really true that syd barrett’s mum had a sister who ran the icp fanclub?

Mike Muir along with the rest of the band were known to dress like "Cholos" even though they were punks.

I have noticed and kinda wondered about that

ICP is mentioned in the opening post

she carries a torch. two torches, actually (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 21:08 (five years ago) link

...but were their fans, the so-called Juggalos, mentioned? I think the OP was on the right track, but overlooked a few obvious bands (e.g., The Insane Clown Posse).

yuh yuh (morrisp), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 21:15 (five years ago) link

Juggalettes

calumy (rip van wanko), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 21:16 (five years ago) link

I think the OP mentioned a posse of clowns, some of whom were insane, but failed to connect the dots in a satisfying way

We were never Breeting Borting (President Keyes), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 21:18 (five years ago) link

Ohhhhhh, I didn't realise ICP was The Insane Clowns Posse.

Stephen Yakkety-Yaxley-Rosbif (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 21:24 (five years ago) link

Mike Muir along with the rest of the band were known to dress like "Cholos" even though they were punks.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 21:25 (five years ago) link

I'm pretty skeptical that only two Insane Clowns constitute an entire Posse

frogbs, Wednesday, 13 February 2019 21:27 (five years ago) link

Muir is half-Mexican, and ST have always had black and Latin members.

grawlix (unperson), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 21:33 (five years ago) link

I think it often happens that there are subcultures with distinct looks and everything for whom a single band is THE band, and their look and general way-of-being is strongly based on the band in some way, but they're not as explicitly associated with the band as Juggalos (surprised nobody mentioned them itt yet!) and KISS army. In fact, sometimes it might be considered gauche to point out how much the subculture owes to the band (or even that the subculture exists). My wife's college friend group is basically defined by their devotion to Jimmy Eat World, but she gets really annoyed when I point it out!

Little known fact: The ICP have a pretty dedicated following. I believe they even go by a name. *googles* Juggalos, that's it.

I'm going to need to see some evidence of that.

What the hell I mentioned Insane Clown Posse in my first post!

frame casual (dog latin), Friday, 15 February 2019 14:20 (five years ago) link

no i'm pretty sure you mentioned PM Dawn. (goes back and checks.) yep, PM Dawn.

We were never Breeting Borting (President Keyes), Friday, 15 February 2019 14:26 (five years ago) link

I don't understand what's going on here. Maybe I forgot to mention Juggalos. Oh no wait... I did. Wow, I can't believe ICP aka Insane Clown Posse and their fans the Juggalos got mentioned so many times in this thread lol

frame casual (dog latin), Friday, 15 February 2019 14:28 (five years ago) link

Thank you for correcting that egregious oversight, dog latin.

Blues Traveler fans called themselves "Poppers" and you could frequently see them dressed as harmonicas, pre-internet days so there are no pics at hand

Juggalos Killed the Radio Star

calumy (rip van wanko), Friday, 15 February 2019 17:53 (five years ago) link

"down with the clown" is an example of the sort of catchphrase that band subcultures often generate (in this case, if you are "down with the clown," you are a Juggalo, and Juggalos are followers of the posse of "Insane Clowns" who make up the band Insane Clown Posse, often abbreviated as ICP).
