That being said, I don't know if I'd like it as much if I heard it for the first time now. That album came at the right time for me.

Really Blues Traveler wasn't that bad

one good moment is when he blurts "For instance" going into the harmonica solo on "All In The Groove"

L'assie (Euler), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 15:39 (five years ago) link

Jeff Mangum's voice is grating to me. I would of fit right in with the early 00's punk rock.

his style seems to be "sing as loud as possible without actually yelling"

frogbs, Wednesday, 13 February 2019 16:03 (five years ago) link

I listened to it for the first time ever last year, as part of MWE (music writers listen to an album they've never heard every day in February and tweet their thoughts).

#MWE Day 23: Neutral Milk Hotel, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea (1998). Eh, I've heard worse. The main dork can kinda sing, at least. pic.twitter.com/br8cEq8SfM

guys there are a zillion records out there, this one^ is certainly one of the "best"

Rhine Jive Click Bait (Hadrian VIII), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 16:41 (five years ago) link

like there are 80,000 albums released every year, what is the threshold? I haven't listened to NMH in many years probably suspecting that it won't affect me the same way it did in my youth, but that doesn't mean it's not one of the "best"

Rhine Jive Click Bait (Hadrian VIII), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 16:48 (five years ago) link

statistically!

٩༼ º෴º ༽۶ (FlopsyDuck), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 16:55 (five years ago) link

well yeah

Rhine Jive Click Bait (Hadrian VIII), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 17:01 (five years ago) link

(i'm sarcastically excited about the popular opinion of what the "best" albums are)

٩༼ º෴º ༽۶ (FlopsyDuck), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 17:27 (five years ago) link

the "best" albums:

summoning: stronghold
summoning: oath bound
summoning: let the moral heroes sing your fame
summoning: dol goldur
miles davis: kind of blue

The Dooleys - Full House
Bradley Walsh - Chasing Dreams
The Donkey Derbies - Frank Zappa Is Fucking Awful

Stephen Yakkety-Yaxley-Rosbif (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 17:36 (five years ago) link

kind of blue more like kind of decent

imago, Wednesday, 13 February 2019 17:36 (five years ago) link

Parallel lines is the best album

Trϵϵship, Wednesday, 13 February 2019 17:37 (five years ago) link

kind of blue more like kind of fucking awesome!!!

"indie" (ie not jazz, metal, hip-hop, or classic rock) records worthy of their reputations imho, as determined by my impressions upon revisiting them within the past year:

Disintegration
Spirit of Eden
Hounds of Love
Loveless
Daydream Nation
Marquee Moon
Entertainment!
Zen Arcade
Deserter's Songs
Psychocandy
It's A Shame About Ray
Double Nickels on the Dime

maybe not controp, but all of these wipe the floor with Nevermind, ITAOTS, and Is This It

Been going back and listening to a lot of things I liked 15-20 years ago for some reason, so this discussion is somewhat timely

Paul Ponzi, Wednesday, 13 February 2019 17:39 (five years ago) link

Pierro Scaruffi sez Aeroplane is the 7th "Best pop (melodic) albums of all times.". One bester than the DB's Stand For Decibels but not quite as best as a record by the 6ths

Rhine Jive Click Bait (Hadrian VIII), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 17:41 (five years ago) link

70. Jason Falkner: Author Unknown (Elektra, 1996)

obviously 73 or 74 but whatever

Rhine Jive Click Bait (Hadrian VIII), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 17:43 (five years ago) link

i'd like to add copeland's blushing and autopsy's mental funeral to that list of "best" albums, they must have slipped my mind

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 18:00 (five years ago) link

i don't think very many records wipe the floor with nevermind. nevermind, every time i revisit it, seems to wipe the floor with everything

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 18:01 (five years ago) link

and i like in utero slightly more myself but come on

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 18:02 (five years ago) link

getting across that kind of power pop clarity and simplicity through angry punk songs, harder than you think

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 18:02 (five years ago) link

i think Nirvana at the time was a band i was a bit cool on but every single time i hear a Nirvana song now, anything from Bleach or Nevermind or In Utero, i wonder why i wasn't more into them. I think Unplugged is actually the one i've cooled on more when at the time of its release i maybe liked it the most.

but then again a lot of those early '90s grunge albums sound a lot better now than they did at the time. i always liked them but even moreso now Pearl Jam completely owns, for example.

when Cornell died (RIP) I went back to Soundgarden for the first time in forever and goddamn what a fucking band, what great sounding records

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 18:18 (five years ago) link

yup

Rhine Jive Click Bait (Hadrian VIII), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 18:19 (five years ago) link

i spun Superunknown for the first time in a million years after he died and that's a massive album.

omar little, Wednesday, 13 February 2019 18:21 (five years ago) link

yes

imago, Wednesday, 13 February 2019 18:22 (five years ago) link

the best

marcos smart (Spottie), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 18:23 (five years ago) link

soundgarden were the real deal

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 18:30 (five years ago) link

have put on Superunknown to try and resolve my one hang-up with the record: its opening stretch. from Head Down onward it's a perfect record but...OK I've gone in let's do this

imago, Wednesday, 13 February 2019 18:40 (five years ago) link

to me it's Louder Than Love > Ultramega OK > Superunknown > the rest

But I agree, amazing band

Paul Ponzi, Wednesday, 13 February 2019 18:42 (five years ago) link

Badmotorfinger is better than all of those, and those are all really good.

Rhine Jive Click Bait (Hadrian VIII), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 18:47 (five years ago) link

shit'ch yea, Soundgarden wailed. Hearing "Wave" at the end of one of the episodes of Escape From Dannemora--it set the tone so perfectly for Tillie's brazen idiocy and semi- lack of conscientiousness, during one of the final few episodes.

controversial, though. Hmmmn. Another Timbre (label) has been putting out high quality recordings for the last nine years, at a consistent / quick frequency. There's an unusually high # of 'classics', for the amount of releases there are. I probably already posted about AT, though

braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 18:58 (five years ago) link

OK yeah, I'd have Superunknown start with the title track and ditch everything before it to an EP or something. I've contropped the uncontroppable, sorry

imago, Wednesday, 13 February 2019 19:01 (five years ago) link

Badmotorfinger is the best IMO

the one that sounded a LOT better than I remembered was Down on the Upside

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 19:02 (five years ago) link

I think I prefer Superunknown because it has more of my favourite sort of Soundgarden song: the roiling six-minute bastard

That said, Pretty Noose is maybe their best tune?

imago, Wednesday, 13 February 2019 19:06 (five years ago) link

Five-minute bastards can also apply

imago, Wednesday, 13 February 2019 19:06 (five years ago) link

god those 90s albums (not just soundgarden) were *long*

mookieproof, Wednesday, 13 February 2019 19:06 (five years ago) link

I too have come to the shattering realization that pearl jam whips ass

Like listen to “the leash” ... what goes harder than that? And I think their whole ethos was kinda cool *shrug*

At the time I vastly preferred Green Day

Vapor waif (uptown churl), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 19:21 (five years ago) link

soundgarden sucked because they really wanted to be Roy Orbison but didn't have the balls to really go for it

sarahell, Wednesday, 13 February 2019 19:22 (five years ago) link

time to bump the superunknown thread again

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 19:27 (five years ago) link

honestly i'm just making shit up -- i don't really care about soundgarden

sarahell, Wednesday, 13 February 2019 19:36 (five years ago) link

Every rock album from roughly 1996-2000 could lose about 5 tracks or 15 minutes and be vastly improved in the process.

grawlix (unperson), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 19:38 (five years ago) link

agree, just not superunknown

marcos smart (Spottie), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 19:40 (five years ago) link

bullshit -- Arab on Radar's Soak the Saddle is perfect as is

sarahell, Wednesday, 13 February 2019 19:40 (five years ago) link

Badmotorfinger is the best IMO

OTM

silent as a seashell Julia (Sund4r), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 19:41 (five years ago) link

Black Hole Sun, Spoonman, Limo Wreck, Kickstand, and 4th of July could all go IMO.

grawlix (unperson), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 19:42 (five years ago) link

they can all go afaic

sarahell, Wednesday, 13 February 2019 19:43 (five years ago) link
