Cheers. Two more Halfs next month to look forward to.

You got anything on the horizon?

planning on doing the thames ring 250 again in june - did it two years ago and really enjoyed it. have managed a good amount of running over the last couple of months and feel like i could be in reasonable shape for it. have also promised my son that i'll do a 24hr mountain bike race around the same time though, so the main problem will be juggling the two lots of training without overdoing things.

Ha! 13.1 miles is plenty for me.

Have some mates doing the Race to the Stones this year but that pales in comparison to the Thames 250.

Good luck if you do enter

groovypanda, Tuesday, 12 February 2019 11:41 (five years ago) link

it'll be more of a staying awake contest than anything else tbh, running wise it's just a slow plod to infinity

one month passes...

im looking for a small (7L ish) running backpack for my commute, any recs?

micah, Tuesday, 19 March 2019 06:40 (five years ago) link

camelbak maybe? the larger ones have a surprising amount of space for things that aren't water.

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Tuesday, 19 March 2019 14:12 (five years ago) link

i have two osprey packs. mine are big for what you describe, they are a 10l and a 32l. i've used them with h20 for long-day rides and fast overnight rides, respectively. i do like how they do, they have a lot of expansion/compression zips and connects that are well-organized and balanced. most importantly have stood up to a lot of ruckus. i've not had to do any warranty support yet (which is it's own necessary excellence, and i've not really heard how they do with it).

they are distinct to what i have, but the duro and dyna running 6l running packs are likely good tho $$$, from my experiences.

wearing a backpack while running is hell

lag∞n, Wednesday, 20 March 2019 00:45 (five years ago) link

i don't really recommend it for anything unless you _have to do_.

by which i mean "running."

Hunt3r, Wednesday, 20 March 2019 01:55 (five years ago) link

my kid has a camelback waistpack/bladder thing, it seemed weird but no worse than usual shoulderstrap setup. but i only did one fastish hike with it. i DEF don't wanna ride with that tho.

Hunt3r, Wednesday, 20 March 2019 02:01 (five years ago) link

no specific recommendation but if you get the option, always go for one that has waist pockets that can be accessed without removing your pack so you’re able to get to your phone/keys/money easily. this is especially convenient if you’re an aging idiot like me who always goes through that whole routine of ‘oh have I got my wallet?’ five minutes after setting out the door each time

kolarov spring (NickB), Wednesday, 20 March 2019 06:04 (five years ago) link

thanks peeps. i will look into a camelbak equivalent and maybe removing the water bag. its a short run so i dont think waist pockets will be a necessity tbh

yes but im kind of in a bind here re: wanting to not buy lunch every day

― Hunt3r, Wednesday, 20 March 2019

this does look good and seems to get excellent reviews

micah, Wednesday, 20 March 2019 06:43 (five years ago) link

ultimate direction packs are supposed to be good, iirc?

gbx, Wednesday, 20 March 2019 17:40 (five years ago) link

two months pass...

i’ve been told that snore so i have been examining a lot of sleep tools. i tried a ventilatory tool called snorepin. It’s just a plastic cone-like thing you ram up there with a little bridge under your septum.

i decided i wanted to try it on some runs. whoa!!! i dont think it increases performance/times at all, but i can run at threshold with my mouth closed. Running at tempo mouth closed is so easy and relaxing. psychologically it is incredible, a total stress reduction for me. i found it good on the bike, too, same effect. it is a bit grody at removal. i’ve never been advised of sinus problems/irregularities but maybe that’s my issue.

anyone else tried these kinda things?

Hunt3r, Saturday, 1 June 2019 19:23 (four years ago) link

do the snorepins work for snoring?

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Sunday, 2 June 2019 15:24 (four years ago) link

yeah i think i'm getting one of those

gbx, Sunday, 2 June 2019 15:29 (four years ago) link

omg u guys know im pretty shadetree-engineering-nerdy, and im trying to cure snoring. missus is a v v light sleeper and i basically got evicted to the guest room which has become SLEEPLAB TM.

I’ll save it for another tedtalk but snorepins have slight if any effect esp compared to other things ime on snoring.

but they are amazing as fuck when i run for making things at least ~feel~ nicer,

Hunt3r, Sunday, 2 June 2019 19:17 (four years ago) link

i'd welcome a snoring thread tbh

Snoring

koogs, Sunday, 2 June 2019 21:02 (four years ago) link

interesting. i've been really struggling to breathe for the last month when i've been out running due to hayfever inflaming my sinuses etc- wondering if those might make it better (more oxygen) or worse (more pollen)?

Br. Des Shadows (NickB), Sunday, 2 June 2019 21:50 (four years ago) link

i don't have any allergies, so no insight there.

i can def imagine a superior material or shape to snorepins, and there's lots of stuff out there afaict, i'll advise if i end up find anything useful. i recall froome using somekind of dilator a few years ago in cycling, i figured they were something like breatheright strips which i had tried in like 1998 or some other long ago era and deemed worthless for me.

Hunt3r, Sunday, 2 June 2019 22:50 (four years ago) link

Think there's some science behind it. Some footballers wear them (or at least something similar). Always remember Robbie Fowler had one but perhaps that was just for coke.

Ok. Just Googled and found this:

(I guess if Paula Radcliffe endorses them there must be some benefit)

groovypanda, Monday, 3 June 2019 10:29 (four years ago) link

Running going well at the moment too.

Got a 10K PB of 38:39 at the Newport 10K last month and have annoyingly equalled my parkrun PB of 18:44 twice in the last few weeks.

Did Colby parkrun on the weekend which was tough with gravel paths and various hills but a lovely setting if anyone's ever down Tenby way.

Two more 10Ks coming up next month and then back to half marathon training for the Autumn.

groovypanda, Monday, 3 June 2019 10:33 (four years ago) link

signed up for a half in November, so I'm ramping up to that real real slow

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Monday, 3 June 2019 13:50 (four years ago) link

that's a great 10k time GP, don't think i'd be anywhere close to that these days. are you doing specific training sessions or is that just off the back of your parkruns?

Br. Des Shadows (NickB), Monday, 3 June 2019 14:04 (four years ago) link

Nothing specific. Parkrun on a Saturday and then 2 or 3 other runs during the week, usually between 12 and 20K.

There's a lot of hills where I live so I think most of it is just the gradual increase in power those have given me, coupled with the aerobic fitness to maintain a faster pace for longer over the shorter 5K/10K distances.

And I'm pretty sure I'd get nowhere near that time on a training run as there's always that extra 10% or so you get from race conditions/crowds.

groovypanda, Monday, 3 June 2019 14:34 (four years ago) link

it’s awesome to poke into running ilx ever once inna and see these goals and accomplishments. for me, bouncing around here, i’m all- “a 25 mi run!” *mind blown*, “a sub 39 10k!” *thats ridiculous fast* “a half marathon!” *inspirin*. Anyhow, carry on-

Hunt3r, Monday, 3 June 2019 15:23 (four years ago) link

yeah, i'd be hard pressed to do a five mile run in under 50. But i'm tryin!

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 3 June 2019 15:33 (four years ago) link

it's funny, one of the benefits for me of running is that after 3-4 months of training I invariably lose about ten pounds and consequently stop snoring!

(also congrats on that 10k time, GP... that's really great! is a parkrun a fixed distance?)

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Monday, 3 June 2019 15:46 (four years ago) link

5k generally. they run hundreds every saturday morning

koogs, Monday, 3 June 2019 15:48 (four years ago) link

Neat, that sounds fun... I'd definitely do that if I was over there. I envy you your pleasant summer running temperatures.

I have a few friends approaching their 100th park run. But I'm 30 minutes from 3 different organised runs and the social aspect doesn't appeal.

koogs, Monday, 3 June 2019 20:14 (four years ago) link

You should train by running between them! : )

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Monday, 3 June 2019 20:21 (four years ago) link

lol i love this snorepins running hack

lag∞n, Tuesday, 4 June 2019 03:29 (four years ago) link

btw i think olympic lifting might be good for running too

lag∞n, Tuesday, 4 June 2019 03:29 (four years ago) link

also i watched a video of sprinters training and they do some wild shit

lag∞n, Tuesday, 4 June 2019 03:32 (four years ago) link

surprised —train like a sprinter— has never become a thing, maybe its too technical, i mean i know ppl sprint and all but the entire sprinting regimen they do some cool stuff

lag∞n, Tuesday, 4 June 2019 03:35 (four years ago) link

they lift a lot of weights

I had a sorta hippie racing teammate/pal in the 90s who long promoted the benes of nose breathing any time possible. which apparently for him then at 6’1” 138 was like A LOT. i was all, “dude, that nose shit CANNOT happen above tempo for me, if then. and when i’m pressing, i’ll breathe through anything, including my asshole, just to stay in.” the fact that i still couldnt stick, and he would, just made it worse.

Hunt3r, Tuesday, 4 June 2019 03:45 (four years ago) link

what about yogic breathing while running lol im sure someone out there is into it

lag∞n, Tuesday, 4 June 2019 03:50 (four years ago) link

I have a few friends approaching their 100th park run. But I'm 30 minutes from 3 different organised runs and the social aspect doesn't appeal.

I'm fortunate that I have about 12 within 30 minutes of mine and my local one is only a 7 minute drive or 30 minute run.

Get that the social side isn't for everyone but I've made lots of friends through it.

groovypanda, Tuesday, 4 June 2019 11:44 (four years ago) link

three months pass...

more park run... a friend has just done one whilst on holiday in krakow. (she's done others whilst on holiday before but only within the uk)

koogs, Saturday, 14 September 2019 16:02 (four years ago) link

this unrelenting summer heat is really making my training rough... I can wait until around 8pm to head out, but it's still about 95 degrees outside, and humid. No problem for 5-6 miles, but when I'm doing a long run (10+ miles) after about 90 minutes it really gets to me. canada please send us a cold front!

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Saturday, 14 September 2019 16:28 (four years ago) link

yeah i dont really run much in the summer, weather started to turn around here and im getting back into it

one month passes...

for my mental health i'm stopping my biking for a while. a looong while. a year maybe? it was taking too much time, too much mental energy, and was getting pretty remote and risky. so i'll be increasing my (horrible) running from 2x/week, 6-9 mi/week to-- more than that. Not sure how much more, it'll depend on what other fun stuff i can find to do.

anyhow, i currently use my phone on the strava app to record my runs, and i'm turning off strava for a while too. but i sorta am game-ified enough that i like a record of my workouts, it gives me something to do (i actually fold all my records, running or riding, into golden cheetah for parsing and posterity. it's not really great for running compared to the power/cycling analysis, but it's something to geek around about).

1) any recommendations for phone app run recording? i use a bluetooth hrm strap (tickr). i have an old mapmyrun account, but it seems like a blizzard of advert bullshit, and i don't see a lap control anywhere. now that i'm all run-ny maybe i want laps? i thought garminconnect would allow me record, but it doesn't seem to have that functionality.

2) or is there a reasonably priced watch thing you like that i should use, instead of a phone app? like, less than a $100 or so? i don't think i want or need barometric altitude, or stride count, or accelerometers or any of that, do i? *hunt3r's inner voice "YOU DON'T NEED ANYTING MAN GET OFF YER ASS AND GO RUNNING"*

3) i have a 2010 era wrist strap adaptor for my garmins, but there is no preset format that swaps from speed to run/pace displays, which would be rad and simple. back when i did training and running imogene in 2010, i just used my garmin on my wrist, but as weird as i looked than, i assume i'd look even weirder now. if there was a runmode i'm not aware off for my 520, though, do advise.

Hunt3r, Tuesday, 15 October 2019 17:11 (four years ago) link

A Garmin Forerunner 35 is $100 (if you don't care about it being turquoise blue, black is $20 more) and does wrist-monitored heart rate, distance, and pace... I have a 235 which tracks the same stuff and I've found it to be very good. I have doubts about wrist-monitored heart rate compared to chest straps, but it's so much easier to not bother with a chest strap I don't care. It's like a weigh scale, might not be totally accurate but it will show the relative changes in your numbers over time.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Tuesday, 15 October 2019 17:23 (four years ago) link

ya get the garmin

lag∞n, Tuesday, 15 October 2019 17:25 (four years ago) link

thanks so much. I def dont care about colors, i’ll check it out.
