interesting...it’s only based on part of this season and these numbers iirc are best interpreted with data over multiple seasons. and there are box score priors that are inputted too — his steals and blocks are down this year so that might have something to do with it.

PIPM seems to be a lot better from what i've seen of it. of course rpm is a joke so the bar is low.
― call all destroyer, Friday, 15 February 2019 14:43 (five years ago) link
all plus minus is fundamentally philosophically flawed
― lag∞n, Friday, 15 February 2019 14:44 (five years ago) link
I don't agree with that, but clearly there are some issues -- mostly owing to small sample sizes and clustered lineups -- that make it unreliable in some cases
― k3vin k., Friday, 15 February 2019 17:31 (five years ago) link
like horford's RPM is really good, 32nd in the league, which seems consistent with his reputation and production this year. like with any statistic some human judgment is needed -- think of theis's numbers like you would a utility infielder whose batting line is really solid vs very favorable matchups, whose numbers would almost certainly come back to earth with more playing time and against more varied opposition. he's played 600 minutes this year, like 1/3 of most starters
― k3vin k., Friday, 15 February 2019 17:35 (five years ago) link
like with any stat there are some players where you scratch your head, and the statistics are in their relative infancy and will hopefully continue to improve. I do think the philosophy of RPM/PIPM is basically what the game is all about though: everything else being equal (& obv this is where the kinks are still being worked out), what is the effect of this player being on the floor on the score of the game?
― k3vin k., Friday, 15 February 2019 17:42 (five years ago) link
like all catch all stats its ignorant of scheme and team which is why it will never understand basketball and requires contextualization eg the very problem it purports to solve

hosting finally gone too far
Here's a graph of the correlation between opponent 3-point attempt rate and defensive rating by season. Because 3s were seen as a shot of desperation, it was negative until the mid-00s before becoming strongly positive for many years ... until flipping back to negative this year. pic.twitter.com/xfnA5dMPYX— Kevin Pelton (@kpelton) February 21, 2019
