How many hours?

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Thursday, 14 February 2019 06:48 (five years ago) link

I think this might be up there with Witcher 3 for me - just so cathartic and immersive.

On the other hand, I met my brother for a drink last week and he told me he got sexually assaulted in this game. I won't go into further detail but it was fairly graphic.

FernandoHierro, Thursday, 14 February 2019 07:57 (five years ago) link

That happened to a friend of mine and he went back to see if it would happen again but the NPC isn't interested in you any more after the first time.

Elitist cheese photos (aldo), Thursday, 14 February 2019 09:27 (five years ago) link

Yeah my brother said he went back and killed the guy in some elaborate manner.

FernandoHierro, Thursday, 14 February 2019 10:13 (five years ago) link

my wife got knocked out and picked up in a fireman's carry by some rando other player (presumably an 11 yo boy) but she pressed the Die button before they got wherever he was taking her. The Die button seems urgent and key.

kf: i don't even want to know.

with the polar vortex and feb snowfalls i've been quote-unquote working from home quite a bit the past month

also a lot of racism online, no surprise: https://www.theverge.com/2019/1/15/18183843/red-dead-online-black-character-racism

after dipping my toe in the water in both GTA online and RDR online, i have learned my lesson and will never participate in a rockstar game's online mode ever again.

global tetrahedron, Friday, 26 April 2019 21:15 (four years ago) link

probably

gta 5 had a 18 month lag from console to pc for what thats worth as precedent

ciderpress, Friday, 26 April 2019 21:21 (four years ago) link

five months pass...

RDR2 coming to PC, nov/dec <3

global tetrahedron, Saturday, 5 October 2019 14:40 (four years ago) link

Yeah I might finally get to play this

calstars, Saturday, 5 October 2019 14:52 (four years ago) link

do not get this for PC

global tetrahedron, Thursday, 14 November 2019 17:15 (four years ago) link

Why not

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Friday, 15 November 2019 03:44 (four years ago) link

hey being a cowboy isn’t about asking questions like that, it’s about following orders

Screamin' Jay Gould (The Yellow Kid), Friday, 15 November 2019 04:01 (four years ago) link

or maybe the opposite, i dunno i never finished the game

Screamin' Jay Gould (The Yellow Kid), Friday, 15 November 2019 04:02 (four years ago) link

yeah heard the PC release was all hosed up.

i never finished it either. it's a stunningly gorgeous game, but man does it go on forever. i'd guess i probably have only ~5 hours left but it could be 25.

circa1916, Friday, 15 November 2019 13:14 (four years ago) link

half of people couldn't even get the game to launch, many others (including me) had stutters and crashes that were seemingly unrelated to hardware capacity- like even those with top of the line machines had them. unplayable. i guess this is the curse of easy patching, not super surprising but just a horribly done port

global tetrahedron, Friday, 15 November 2019 17:00 (four years ago) link

Ah well that answers that then

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Wednesday, 20 November 2019 20:43 (four years ago) link

the game itself is gorgeous but the plot just repeats itself. 'we need one last heist to stop this life of crime for good' (something goes horribly wrong) 'we need one last heist to stop this life of crime for good' (something goes horribly wrong) 'we need one last heist to stop this life of crime for good' (something goes horribly wrong)

Picked this up. It’s fun

so i basically have no idea what you're supposed to do in online, what the point is. the different challenges and icons/etc are basically just like game lobbies distributed around the map? free roam was really quiet, i know there are missions and other players join for parts of them, but other than that it just seems completely empty and there is no point in doing anything. seems like wasted potential

global tetrahedron, Friday, 15 May 2020 17:18 (three years ago) link

I've been playing a lot of this lately. If you can manage to do just one daily challenge per day (which can be as simple as (go to x place)), you build up a multiplier that makes it a lot easier to get the gold you need to do stuff.

You want to focus on the daily challenges and the roles. Doing those tasks regularly sort of teaches you to play the game the way they want you play it.

If I feel like I'm in a spot where I'm wasting my time in a remote location, I load up the quick menu and launch into a multiplayer story mission or pvp, which both generally pay out well. They can be a little boring but it's a great way to get back on track really quick.

Generally, don't waste your money on anything except for the most important stuff early on.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Friday, 15 May 2020 17:32 (three years ago) link

There isn't a point to it any more than there's a point to playing Animal Crossing. You have to enjoy being in the space and the expanse of it, I think.

It's the redheaded stepchild compared to gtao, no arguing with that.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Friday, 15 May 2020 17:40 (three years ago) link

i agree about the wasted potential remark, though, for both RDR and GTA Online. there's a way to have fun with it, but it seems so limited and...strange. just a very strange vibe in both of those online places, it's hard to explain

porlockian solicitor (Karl Malone), Friday, 15 May 2020 18:16 (three years ago) link

they both have the otherworldly feeling of an airport. only in this airport, every once in a while someone will just drive by and murder you as soon as you respawn

porlockian solicitor (Karl Malone), Friday, 15 May 2020 18:17 (three years ago) link

Doing those tasks regularly sort of teaches you to play the game the way they want you play it.

this was something i needed to learn during the campaign. it really got more enjoyable once i got used to the relaxed pace, got very immersive. better the slower you play it. thanks for the tip! i don't doubt there is something there, just thought a cowboy MMO would be amazing but it just wasn't what i expected

global tetrahedron, Friday, 15 May 2020 18:45 (three years ago) link

Also, typing "rdr2 (name of thing)" into youtube is your friend.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Friday, 15 May 2020 19:10 (three years ago) link

Thanks to my shitty internet and the game's hilarious size it took me a full week to download it from Xbox Game Pass.

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Friday, 15 May 2020 19:16 (three years ago) link

so far i have to say i am appreciating that the economy makes sense now even if it's gamified to take advantage of 'whales'. like in the campaign money becomes irrelevant early on and the shootouts are so easy that tonics/food etc are basically meaningless which makes the RPG elements half baked

global tetrahedron, Friday, 15 May 2020 20:33 (three years ago) link

and the honor system is far less opaque

Suddenly clicked with me that I might like this game. It's down to $30 in the PS4 store. Seems like a good price for a 100GB monster. Think it will get much cheaper any time soon?

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 27 July 2020 21:33 (three years ago) link

I should've made more of an effort with this as I'm sure it's great but it starts off so slow. Just felt like endless trudging through the snow.

nate woolls, Monday, 27 July 2020 21:38 (three years ago) link

yeah I liked the RDR1 but I got kinda bored with 2 halfway through it

Piven After Midnight (The Yellow Kid), Monday, 27 July 2020 22:16 (three years ago) link

the snow bits don't last long, game gets good.

Two Meter Peter (Ste), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 09:38 (three years ago) link

My very casual survey of takes makes it seem like people generally like the first 3/5 of it but then get bored in the redundant endgame. I haven't played The Witcher yet, either, but that's another one where I hear people lose interest in the game, as such, even though they enjoy the world it offers for exploration.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 28 July 2020 13:54 (three years ago) link

I have started RDR2 twice but never got out of the snow. I found the controls quite arbitrary and floaty. Clearly got to get used to this, but it seemed to be 'Press square to draw your gun; press R2 to stand in a particular stance; press triangle to fire; press L1 to put the gun away' - I couldn't really work out how I was supposed to get used to this and it was reminiscent of other games like Last Of Us where you seem to just be playing a story and hitting buttons at the right times. I'm sure once I'm out the prelude it'll make more sense though.

doorstep jetski (dog latin), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 14:50 (three years ago) link

i loved RDR and only made it a few missions into RDR2 before stagnating. a lot of that is me (i don't have time or concentration for big complicated games anymore, i have discovered the switch is the perfect console for me), but yeah the controls seemed chunky and confusing. he moves so slowly, even when "running," it's like moving in molasses.

i did love the witcher though.

na (NA), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 15:14 (three years ago) link

I'm sure once I'm out the prelude it'll make more sense though.

definitely. the game hits a stride once you actually hit the open world and are free to go wander off on your horse and explore, shoot innocent birds all day, accidentally bump into drunk people and start a fight, etc.

The GOAT Harold Land (Karl Malone), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 15:37 (three years ago) link

There were elements of "press button now" to "The Last of Us," but mostly during cut scenes or ... QTEs? Is that the jargon? Anyway much of "Last of Us" was not like that, it was strategy and stealth and aiming and exploring. But I also like the idea of playing a story.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 28 July 2020 16:14 (three years ago) link

I played about a hundred hours of RDR2 Online but didn't finish the second half of the main story.

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 16:39 (three years ago) link

I really didn't want to fish or hunt or do other side mission stuff with Arthur Morgan, a dude is a precarious situation and actively being chased by his enemies. It just never made sense to me that he'd be like, welp, time to get that hunting achievement! John Marston felt more like a guy with time to kill.

'Press square to draw your gun; press R2 to stand in a particular stance; press triangle to fire; press L1 to put the gun away'

srsly tho this is a very accurate description of what I hated about this game

(but it is great)

Two Meter Peter (Ste), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 20:56 (three years ago) link
