Having them end up in the same timeline at the end would've robbed them of the opportunity to save each other's lives, which was, in part, the whole genesis of the glitch.

Um, I kind of agree with Tuomas
― Only a Factory URL (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 10 February 2019 21:12 (five years ago) link
The series would've been immensely weakened were the two timelines not divergent imo

i myself go to fabulous nyc parties like this all the time, but never on a sunday night.
This is by far the most unbelievable part of the show.
― change display name (Jordan), Sunday, 10 February 2019 21:35 (five years ago) link
Like, just say she had to come in and do a bug fix on Sunday, it's much more believable and less distracting.
― change display name (Jordan), Sunday, 10 February 2019 21:41 (five years ago) link
I remember lots of stuff going on Sunday nights. Friday and Saturdays were for tourists and bridge and tunnel (when I was younger).
― Yerac, Sunday, 10 February 2019 21:44 (five years ago) link
yeah, not only would the divergent / ambiguity about divergence in the big metaphorical???? parade ending be drastically weaker, it would make the second series thuddingly bathetic
(if they do make one, which seems likely given the reaction; I'm fine if they don't, but Headland and Lyonne get commissioned to make something else new instead) xp nah, so much of her character and milieu is IMMEDIATELY filled in by the fact that a) she doesn't want a birthday party b) rich artist friends throw her a huge party c) on her actual birthday because that is her birthday d) nearly exclusively full of people she's never set eyes on before e) that she goes to anyway regardless of her antipathy, the absence of friends, and having a major work deadline in the morning.

The idea of them making "season 2" of this is absurd and I hope nobody is actually thinking about doing it, so few things end well and this one does.
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 11 February 2019 00:12 (five years ago) link
Lyonne & Headland & Poehler have a three-season plan, so they’re the ones you have to tell are getting it wrong.
― The Very Fugly Caterpillar (sic), Monday, 11 February 2019 00:46 (five years ago) link
They *pitched* a 3 season plan, but we don't know how much it got condensed to give us the season we got.
― Johnny Fever, Monday, 11 February 2019 00:48 (five years ago) link
Yeah, not looking forward to further seasons
― Only a Factory URL (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 11 February 2019 01:17 (five years ago) link
Well I do have great faith in them based on this, so if they came in with a 3-season plan, I trust there's a good reason for it. But if they are feeling compelled to scramble to come up with something because everybody likes this so much, then no, I think they should let this ending be the ending and do something else.
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 11 February 2019 01:19 (five years ago) link
Just finished, and I adored it, but yeah, I really hope they don't do a second season. This was a full story in itself, what the hell would be the point?
― emil.y, Monday, 11 February 2019 01:26 (five years ago) link

This sums up my feelings much better than my own post, actually.

So... she's in her 30s, then?
― emil.y, Monday, 11 February 2019 02:08 (five years ago) link
My "when I was younger" thing was more about NYC (pre-internet loneliness_ gentrification) than about age really.
― Yerac, Monday, 11 February 2019 02:10 (five years ago) link
She’s 39, apparently.

The best thing about nyc was how 30-40-80 somethings would still go out on school nights.

Mainlined this entire thing last night, thoughts and impressions still percolating but one thing I keep coming back to is that, for reasons I can't quite pin down, this felt like a Jaime Hernandez story to me (which is super high praise). Possibly because I haven't seen anyone on screen better capture the essence of Hopey Glass than Natasha Lyonne (who should probably win all the awards).

Interesting comparison. I've always wondered who would be good actresses to play Maggie and Hopey.

Enjoying this. I like how it feels like a fantasy melange of early 00s and contemporary LES/East Village as parties like this were familiar to me - minus the recurring stuff - back in the early 2000s. Different NYC.
About to go back and re-read thread now that I finished the series yesterday but I just wanted to co-sign this ^ hard. NL's style and the party (smoking indoors incessantly lol) and the version of the LES (Odessa??!) portrayed are basically point-for-point out of the late 90s/early 00s that I remember. Pre-electroclash rockers everywhere, like no colors existed other than black, white, and red, somewhere in between mod revival and 70s glam. The vintagey blouses, the sharp-toed boots--and going clubbing on Sunday nights in defiance of Monday mornings. (Shout was on Sundays!)
It made me really happy and nostalgic tbrr.

From something someone said on fb I think the name "Horse" was a shout-out to an actual person from pre-gentrification LES days.

Oh I didn't realize both Veselka and Odessa still existed. For some reason I thought at least one of them had closed.

Odessa bar closed, diner is still there. I djd Karen O’s 21st birthday party in her apt above Odessa but she and her friends including one ex-ilxor were more interested in hanging out on the roof with some Shout dudes. Also saw a FB friend talking about Tompkins park gutter punk named Horse and assuming it was a tribute but I like the book theory above. Could be all if the above. Happy to accept this show as working on several different levels and angles.

heh I'll never forget the time in early 2000 when I went to a party near the New York University campus near Greenpoint, Brooklyn (sort of by the Pies and Thighs restraunt) and I accidentally walked into a bedroom where Karen O from The Yeah Yeah Yeahs was having sexual intercourse with Julian Casabalancas from The Strokes. OMG! parties back then were really wild and crazy, with many sex and drugs! fun times
