I remember before s2 came out and I was disgusted to hear Alan was going to have a girlfriend; I thought nothing could top s1. I was wrong!

I’m with sic (and against coogan) in loving Alan when things ARE going his way; iap s2, the bouncing back era, is the worst era of partridge only because they hadn’t quite figured out how to do this, but i, partridge is wonderful because a partridge more or less comfortable in his skin and almost managing to actually enjoy his petty fiefdom is far *more* monstrous than a constantly humiliated daily mail guy at the hotel schadenfreude (not to mention truer to irl partridges, few of whom probably conceive of themselves as failures even as they enumerate all their past injuries in their self-serving memoirs)

I realise it sounds like I don’t like I’m Alan Partridge, I think it’s brilliant but there’s a conventional wisdom that the reason s2 isn’t as good as s1 is that Alan is “on the upswing” which is bollocks - I mean for a start he clearly isn’t except in his head, but also the north Norfolk era just disproves that idea completely, it’s far sharper in showing Alan doing pretty well but having his fundamental brokenness showing through

'Sunday Bloody Sunday'. What a great song. It really encapsulates the frustration of a Sunday, doesn't it? You wake up in the morning, you've got to read all the Sunday papers, the kids are running round, you've got to mow the lawn, wash the car, and you think "Sunday, bloody Sunday!".

it’s incredible how much they manage to pack into each episode. for the poll summary i tried to only pick three highlights from each episode, but there’s so bloody much i had to leave out.

I don't think it's so much Alan being comfortable with his position in life, it's that he's finally the right age.

It's been a while since I read I, Partridge but I'm sure he describes the teenage him as a 50 year old man waiting to happen (or similar) and now his body's caught up (or rather slowed down) to his mind.

series 2 is jam packed with incredible moments, which i think a lot of people forget when they’re reassessing the show from memory. sure series 1 is better, but series 2 is still incredible. series 7 of the simpsons isn’t as good as series 5, but it’s still classic television.

Properly annoyed the full norfolk bravery awards clip is removed from youtube. S2 is underrated.

series 2 seems to have more moments which… don’t seem to end properly. like the inland revenue visit, and that weird scene where he destroys his cereals.

It's a season without any real momentum to its arcs, yeah, so it's more a series of loose moments. But those are funny.

It's full of classic moments but, I don't know, it seems like everyone, but especially Coogan, is trying too hard. The drummer's fine.

Armando randomly says how much he dislikes IAP2, or at least some of it, on the dvd commentary track for his own Armando Ianucci Shows. The dvd came out in 2005 mind so maybe he’s warmer towards it now. A lot of it falls very flat, Lynn seems to be a different more exaggerated person, and the fat make up doesn’t work at all. I wonder if it just seemed, at the time, suddenly much less subtle than The Office which had first been shown the year before series 2 aired. You couldn’t help but compare them. The laugh track made it seem dated.

I tell him I enjoyed the most recent I'm Alan Partridge series, which I did. Armando, it turns out, is not so sure. "I just don't think it gelled," he says. Really? "There were some funny bits in it. But I was aware of not being able to cope, so I went to the doctor and got signed off for three months." A mini-breakdown? Burnout? "It was stress. I should have done it earlier." What happened to the production? "Everything shut down." Was it scary? "It was great. I was at home. Carmello [his third child, a daughter to add to two sons with his wife, Rachel] was about to be born. It's funny, when you do something like that you realise how everyone gets so sucked in by their daily routines. You forget you can call a halt. The world does not cave in. I think this is why I feel slightly dubious about the last series. It was very difficult to make, and I don't feel as if I was in it. I feel very detached from it. In fact, we've recorded the rough elements of a new series, but I'm not producing it. Someone else is doing it."

What's this done to your relationship with Steve Coogan? "I don't think I'll work with Steve for quite a while. He was a major niggle on a day-to-day basis. We've talked about it and he knew. We didn't fall out or anything. It's like if you share a flat with someone. You can be best friends and then you share a flat and think, 'I can't bear it.' We sort of assumed we'd all be exactly as we were five years ago, but we're not, we're five years older. And it's strange trying to do exactly what we did five years ago, and I sort of thought we should have been doing a completely new thing, not revisiting the old. But the pressure was on. The BBC wanted Partridge, and people would say, 'When is Alan coming back?' You have an obligation. You're in a room with each other for a year. Every day. That's quite an intense activity. Quite personal." Gosh, this is getting gloomy. Maybe Armando just isn't an "up" kind of person generally. But then, who in comedy ever is?

it does seem dated for its time, now that you mention it. the fat makeup wasn’t great but i still find that whole sequence hilarious. lynn changing i hadn’t noticed, but i’m about to watch the whole thing again (it’s been at least three months) so i’ll look for it this time.

you'll love the bit where: halfway through the first of two weeks in Melbourne, they're close enough to selling out that they add two return shows a month later, after the Perth and Adelaide and Brisbane and first round of Sydney shows, having already had to reschedule Christchurch and Auckland due to selling out and adding dates in Sydney. (they ended up having to do two stints at three different theatres in Sydney)
