I've never didn't got Scott 4! The Seventh Seal is dross, On Your Own Again is moving because of the epiphany and the string entry and charming in it brevity, The World's Strongest Man is trite, Angels Of Ashes is a cyclical wonderland that I adored until I decided I might learn it and then read the lyrics and wow they are bad, Boy Child is one of Scott's best, same with Hero, and I have no particular feelings for he rest of it. 4 is scattershot emotionally and there is none of the incredible world-building that Scott 3 goes for, which sustains such a specific and perfect mood, and would be one of my favourite records of all time except that "We Came Through" is out of place, "30th Century Man" is unambitious, and I prefer Brel in French

The keepers from 4:

On Your Own Again (brevity!)
Hero of the War
Boy Child
Get Behind Me
The Old Man's Back Again

...which is five more than I expected.

I LOVE The Seventh Seal in all its Morri-phoney glory. My faves are that, Old Man and Hero of the War

I think 4 is my favourite of the lot. Scott 3 I find a bit sleepy and a monotonous. So many slow soaring tracks, not enough bite

frame casual (dog latin), Friday, 8 February 2019 14:47 (five years ago) link

my favorite songs on 4 are the ones where he scats at the end

nah see you win the game of liking music when you are so discerning that you like mayyyyybe 1 piece of music

The second half of Scott 4 is a bit of a let down (relatively speaking, love the man and his records). Scott 3 is completely consistent imo and, might I say, dreamy (perhaps that's the 'sleepy' DL mentions). But The Seventh Seal would be one of the first songs I'd put on a C90 of the man.

too indiscriminate, truly discerning listeners know that all music that's been made is inferior but continue to hold out hope that one day a piece of music will be made that meets that listener's exacting standards

Nick Tosches is the worst of the first generation of rock critics (though Richard Meltzer gives him a serious run for it).

Songs In The Key Of Life more like Songs That Make Me Feel Frustrated With Their Insipidness And Interminability And Cause Me Great Aggravation When I'm Trying To Buy Groceries, Plus "Sir Duke", Which Is Admittedly Fantastic

After some weekend consideration I’ve come to the conclusion that Sugar Ray is in fact better than Sigur Ros.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 12 February 2019 17:54 (five years ago) link

music wise there is hardly anything in the world that is worse than sigur ros. maybe german schlager.

Ich bin kein Berliner (alex in mainhattan), Tuesday, 12 February 2019 22:35 (five years ago) link

you know I don't think I've ever heard anyone talk shit about Stevie Wonder ever on a music board, so bravo

frogbs, Tuesday, 12 February 2019 22:43 (five years ago) link

in college I had a buddy who was big into Sigur Ros and I remember thinking Aegutus Bryumr (sp?) was just this super-gorgeous, life-affirming music. a few months later I asked to borrow the CD and listened to it in the car and was amazed at how droll and silly it was. like, I have no clue what I heard the first time. no I was not high.

frogbs, Tuesday, 12 February 2019 22:45 (five years ago) link

This is a real phenomenon and I've never been able to explain it. Many are the records I heard in the context of a record store or in a friend's car and decided I needed to own only to buy it and bring it home and wonder what I saw in it

Paul Ponzi, Tuesday, 12 February 2019 22:51 (five years ago) link

xp i had exactly the same experience with agaetis byrjun, frogbs. i heard it on the radio played by a dj i considered good in 2001? and thought it was subtle transcendental music. when i bought the cd and listened to it, it turned into dust. all i heard was someone who tried to sing like a whale and failing surrounded by bombastic musical triteness.

Ich bin kein Berliner (alex in mainhattan), Tuesday, 12 February 2019 23:13 (five years ago) link

I didn't like Agaetis, but I liked ( ) a lot and saw them on that tour, accompanied by a string quartet. It was awesome. But I haven't liked anything they've done since, and honestly I had kinda forgotten they still existed until reading this thread.

I am another Stevie Wonder skeptic. Talking Book and Innervisions are great, but Songs... is absolutely a slog.

Stevie doesn't do much for me either honestly, and I'm a big fan of 60s/70s soul/rnb/whatever you wanna call it (eg Curtis Mayfield is one of the geniuses of music imo). Even Innervisions I can do without.

Nick Tosches is the worst of the first generation of rock critics (though Richard Meltzer gives him a serious run for it).

Meltzer had a better grasp of '60s rock than any of the other first generation mainstream dudes, even if his '60s era writing is whacked out. He talks down his more serious '70s era writing like his stuff for the Village Voice in the anthology, but at his best during that time, he was brilliant. (I'd include some of his earlier '70s Rolling Stone reviews in there, too.)

timellison, Wednesday, 13 February 2019 03:04 (five years ago) link

In the Sigur Ros vein, it was a bad day when I realised that Dead Can Dance are schlock of the highest order. Might have been when I saw Lisa Gerrard interviewed for Toward the Within or Mirror Pool or something.

an incoherent crustacean (MatthewK), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 04:01 (five years ago) link

Yeah sorry I’m sick and wrong. I admit I’ve only given the classic era albums (aside from Innervisions and Life, which I’ve tried so hard to love) a once through, and they’re fine, tho the singles I would happily do without, I just can’t really compare Stevie to other similar artists of that era who with lesser chops didn’t always feel like every song was a science project on Childbirth or Fission or Was Jesus Real? or Mental Health Is Important

Stevie Wonder won many science fairs in the 70s but made no albums I have any patience for

flamboyant goon tie included, Wednesday, 13 February 2019 04:26 (five years ago) link

do you seriously not like 'As', flambo???

flopson, Wednesday, 13 February 2019 04:30 (five years ago) link

No, “As” gets a 0 from me. The song expresses nothing but proficiency, it (like so many other SW songs) ends at the 3:30 mark and continues on for another 3:30, there is no risk, there is no sense of suspension, there is no bouyancy, it’s a plane that refuses to take off. There is more drama in a recent burp than there is in this interminable declaration of devotion. Stevie in the 70s is to me what Prince in the 00s is to others, a brilliant musician coasting
