I've never didn't got Scott 4! The Seventh Seal is dross, On Your Own Again is moving because of the epiphany and the string entry and charming in it brevity, The World's Strongest Man is trite, Angels Of Ashes is a cyclical wonderland that I adored until I decided I might learn it and then read the lyrics and wow they are bad, Boy Child is one of Scott's best, same with Hero, and I have no particular feelings for he rest of it. 4 is scattershot emotionally and there is none of the incredible world-building that Scott 3 goes for, which sustains such a specific and perfect mood, and would be one of my favourite records of all time except that "We Came Through" is out of place, "30th Century Man" is unambitious, and I prefer Brel in French

I don't think disliking Scott Walker's 60s music is exactly controversial fwiw.

I'm trying to listen to Scott Walker. Even when he seems to be trying his hardest his voice has as much soul as Dean Martin's.

I LOVE The Seventh Seal in all its Morri-phoney glory. My faves are that, Old Man and Hero of the War

I think 4 is my favourite of the lot. Scott 3 I find a bit sleepy and a monotonous. So many slow soaring tracks, not enough bite

The second half of Scott 4 is a bit of a let down (relatively speaking, love the man and his records). Scott 3 is completely consistent imo and, might I say, dreamy (perhaps that's the 'sleepy' DL mentions). But The Seventh Seal would be one of the first songs I'd put on a C90 of the man.

in college I had a buddy who was big into Sigur Ros and I remember thinking Aegutus Bryumr (sp?) was just this super-gorgeous, life-affirming music. a few months later I asked to borrow the CD and listened to it in the car and was amazed at how droll and silly it was. like, I have no clue what I heard the first time. no I was not high.

xp i had exactly the same experience with agaetis byrjun, frogbs. i heard it on the radio played by a dj i considered good in 2001? and thought it was subtle transcendental music. when i bought the cd and listened to it, it turned into dust. all i heard was someone who tried to sing like a whale and failing surrounded by bombastic musical triteness.
