this against all logic is quite fun. I think it wld be more enjoyable if it were less familiar

Enjoying the Laurel Halo. Not sure why but never really checked out much of her work before
And looking forward to listening to Universal Beings based on comments upthread
― groovypanda, Thursday, 7 February 2019 10:40 (five years ago) link
I really loved Laurel Halo's "Quarantine" album from '12 but everything shes released since has been unappealing
― . (Michael B), Thursday, 7 February 2019 11:43 (five years ago) link
me = Sweetener voter
― Jeff W, Thursday, 7 February 2019 11:45 (five years ago) link
Random thought I had overnight: could Khruangbin yet place? I didn't vote for it, but I thought the record was well liked round here.
― Jeff W, Thursday, 7 February 2019 11:50 (five years ago) link
Universal Beings is, along with Neneh Cherry and Saba (thx Pom!), the best discovery for me so far this rollout.
― Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 7 February 2019 11:59 (five years ago) link
For me it's the opposite, I hated the vocals on that record, but her subsequent instrumental releases have been more appealing, with Raw Silk being the best.
I didn't check out Dust in 2017 cos I heard it has vocals too... Are they as grating as on Quarantine?
― Tuomas, Thursday, 7 February 2019 12:09 (five years ago) link
dust is my least favourite laurel halo record and you'd probably find it grating
― ogmor, Thursday, 7 February 2019 12:21 (five years ago) link
If you heard Laurel Halo's earlier stuff (Hour Logic, King Felix) before later stuff you'd know she was a decent singer (when choosing to be). RSUW is the first thing I've liked by her in years either way.
― nashwan, Thursday, 7 February 2019 12:40 (five years ago) link
Yeah, I've no doubt the vocal style she chose for Quarantine was intentional, but that doesn't change the fact it sounds awful.
― Tuomas, Thursday, 7 February 2019 12:44 (five years ago) link
her vocals *are* more pleasing on dust
it’s kind of a v fractured pop record tuomas. took me forever to like it but i sure like it now
― jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 7 February 2019 12:50 (five years ago) link
I liked Quarantine but on the whole there's something about Halo's productions that don't jibe so well with me
― frame casual (dog latin), Thursday, 7 February 2019 13:15 (five years ago) link
Is the poll finishing today as usual?
― Oor Neechy, Thursday, 7 February 2019 13:27 (five years ago) link
Yes.
I'm......quite enjoying the Ariana Grande album?
― imago, Thursday, 7 February 2019 13:28 (five years ago) link
Until Breathin comes along and shits all over everything
― imago, Thursday, 7 February 2019 13:33 (five years ago) link
But hey - the title track is GREAT!
it's kind of sad that the Keith Emerson/Robert Berry album isn't gonna place, way to respect a deceased legend guys
― frogbs, Thursday, 7 February 2019 13:40 (five years ago) link
lol
― imago, Thursday, 7 February 2019 13:43 (five years ago) link
it surprises me 0 percent that you like the awful pharrell tracks
(the title track is p good given the circumstances)
― jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 7 February 2019 13:44 (five years ago) link
lol I was gonna say, calling 'breathin' the nadir appears, from a perusal of reviews, to be a massive challop
― imago, Thursday, 7 February 2019 13:46 (five years ago) link
call it as i hear it yo
the title track is one of the better pharrell tracks and i liked "successful" a fair bit too because it sounded like animal crossing music. "breathin" is way better though even though it's basically just a dangerous woman leftover
― ufo, Thursday, 7 February 2019 13:48 (five years ago) link
Shame not to see Szun Waves place. It's probably the one I've most often foisted on people this year. And I'm guessing I'm largely alone with my Good, the Bad & the Queen love. God, I feel old.
― Good cop, Babcock (Chinaski), Thursday, 7 February 2019 14:13 (five years ago) link
I also voted for TGTBATQ
― mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 7 February 2019 14:25 (five years ago) link
And Sweetener
I liked TGTBATQ! But didn't vote for it. But it's good Albarn (as opposed to most Albarn these days)
― imago, Thursday, 7 February 2019 14:26 (five years ago) link
I feel a) old and ii) grubby for voting for Albarn. Glad I'm not alone!
― Good cop, Babcock (Chinaski), Thursday, 7 February 2019 14:29 (five years ago) link
really looking forward to Autechre placing #1 today
― frogbs, Thursday, 7 February 2019 14:30 (five years ago) link
I have had an excellent realisation btw
― imago, Thursday, 7 February 2019 14:32 (five years ago) link
i think that autechre song i started playing during the tracks poll is still going on
― simmy simmy ya, simmy yam simmy yay (voodoo chili), Thursday, 7 February 2019 14:32 (five years ago) link
if gaz coombes can crack the top 20, then there’s every chance albarn has made it too
― goats eat grandma (NickB), Thursday, 7 February 2019 14:33 (five years ago) link
New TGTBATQ is dreeeary. I liked the single though.
― . (Michael B), Thursday, 7 February 2019 14:36 (five years ago) link
tbaf to it, it is kind of a concept album about dreariness
― imago, Thursday, 7 February 2019 14:37 (five years ago) link
And I am kind of dreary.
― Good cop, Babcock (Chinaski), Thursday, 7 February 2019 14:41 (five years ago) link
getting paul simonon and tony allen to play on an album full of dreary plodders is borderline criminal imo
― . (Michael B), Thursday, 7 February 2019 14:42 (five years ago) link
The Clash could plod with the best of them.
― Good cop, Babcock (Chinaski), Thursday, 7 February 2019 14:49 (five years ago) link
they fought the plod but the plod won
― goats eat grandma (NickB), Thursday, 7 February 2019 14:55 (five years ago) link
loool
― imago, Thursday, 7 February 2019 14:56 (five years ago) link

haha clean hit
― sleeve, Thursday, 7 February 2019 15:09 (five years ago) link
i was the first place laurel halo voter and it's my favourite thing she's done; astonishing record.
― devvvine, Thursday, 7 February 2019 15:33 (five years ago) link
i didnt expect this makaya mccraven to be so post rocky and tortoise/chicago underground duo-ish
― Oor Neechy, Thursday, 7 February 2019 15:50 (five years ago) link
Someone should've told me earlier
Yeah, got strong Horse Lords vibes on the one track I've heard so far
― Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Thursday, 7 February 2019 15:52 (five years ago) link
FYI on mccraven: dude tapes his live sets and then remixes them after for loops and effects.
― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Thursday, 7 February 2019 16:01 (five years ago) link
The title track is so gorgeous
― jmm, Thursday, 7 February 2019 16:07 (five years ago) link
Whole album is gorgeous tbh! my fave is likely Black Lion.it's not quite as good but "where we come from" which is ALSO from 2018 is definitely worth listening to as well.
― Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Thursday, 7 February 2019 16:10 (five years ago) link
looks like I am going to be a euro ilxor sat in an mostly empty club later tonight, following the final rollout of these albums by the glow of my phone, nursing a vodka tonic pale ale, while sad German techno some underground rap nonsense throbs in the background
― ogmor, Thursday, 7 February 2019 16:10 (five years ago) link
we've just had a new ikea open today, could follow it from there
― imago, Thursday, 7 February 2019 16:12 (five years ago) link
i feel like a little kid waiting impatiently at the gates of the candy factory here. when do we see inside the top 20?
― goats eat grandma (NickB), Thursday, 7 February 2019 16:12 (five years ago) link
to be honest, the early part of these rollouts is more interesting, when more surprises pop up. The final 10 or 20 feel a lot more inevitable, what with all the guessing that's already happened.
