oh no not indie

brimstead, Thursday, 7 February 2019 03:06 (five years ago) link

so let me explain, i'm going for MGMT and Beach House. getting YYY, Phoenix and Grizzly Bear (wink) seems like a bonus for $99.

It’s all good 🎹🎸🚢

That just like heaven festival should be called 10 year challenge festival. Most of those bands released probably their last best album in 2009.

I’d totally pay $100 to see them.

I kinda like that 10 year challenge festival idea... 2020 you get to choose a lineup of LCD Soundsystem, Vampire Weekend, Black Keys, Sleigh Bells, Caribou, Yeasayer and Deerhunter.

2021: Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, St Vincent, Girls, Destroyer, Florence and the Machine, Yuck, M83

And so on

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 7 February 2019 08:19 (five years ago) link

On 2028 you get Parquet Courts, Mitski, Rolling Blackouts CF, Idles, lets eat grandma and Carseat headrest

I mean I was assuming that's essentially its premise, rather than them having accidentally booked two dozen acts all strongly associated with a very specific era and demographic

You could certainly do worse than that for a Boomer rock cruise

the local media are generally unimpressed with the soul'd out festival lineup with the exception of leikeli47, i get the disappointment but the only one that really stands out is the continued inexplicable popularity of reggae mike love, who's above kadhja bonet for some reason

oh my god I wish reggae Mike Love’s artist name was actually Reggae Mike Love

i like how noddy's puncture just made their logo their name in arial

still smarter than the logo approaches of "slillmarillion" and "afterslow"

i don't really have a choice but to call reggae mike love reggae mike love, there's literally no other way to differentiate him from non-reggae mike love

possibly the best lineup, not the worst, but the most-bemusingly-conceived overall festival?

Don't want to make any personal value judgments but thought you folks would be enthusiastic to see this

The Ticketmaster page reveals that this might be a concert series and therefore not a festival lineup per se, but there's more quality acts over in that direction

i expected to see the glastonbury lineup in here

Hereford Live made a strong claim last year (Peter Andre, Cheeky Girls, Midge Ure and one of the guys out of The Real Thing) but with this year expanded to two days and what I can only assume are the headliners announced, I think I can safely say this year has knocked it out of the park.

Saturday - Gareth Gates and Dappy (him out of N-Dubz)
Sunday - Cascada and Ultrabeat

Can't decide if this is the 50th anniversary of 1969 or 25th anniversary of 1994 or 20th anniversary of 1999.

I mean there are some great artists on that bill... but the cumulative impact is very WTF.

There isn't an act on that poster that I'd wanna see. The closest is The Zombies, but not in 2019.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Wednesday, 20 March 2019 14:29 (five years ago) link

I guarantee Courtney Barnett’s band live is better than whatever your current favorite band is.

I know Tame Impala has been on the steady rise, but Lolla/Coachella headliner is ... huh. Have the Black Keys been on vacation or something?

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 20 March 2019 15:17 (five years ago) link

back to prog in the park for a moment, it's quite something that they got none other than thee roger dean to design the festival font!

And his mother to do the layout.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 20 March 2019 15:21 (five years ago) link

Josh, are you going to Lolla?

What's that Phish song that goes "Bag it, Tag it"? (morrisp), Wednesday, 20 March 2019 15:22 (five years ago) link

You know, I haven't gone in years, tbh. It's become such a gross scene of bros and bad smells. Plus it's a red flag when there are something like 170 different acts but usually only 5 or so I'd want to see it, while at the same time the scale and layout more or less makes it impossible to easily discover new things.

So no, likely no. My kids have asked about it, but only in the context of fashion. They've never mentioned the music.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 20 March 2019 15:31 (five years ago) link

Have the Black Keys been on vacation or something?

Pretty much. They went on hiatus after the last album bombed. Auerbach's been doing solo stuff and producing. Drummer dude married Michelle Branch or something, and toured w/her.

xxp Took my daughters to Lolla last year. Four days of Chicago heat and sun was too much: we arrived at 2 on Thursday and immediately saw kids getting taken to the medical tent. And only a handful of bands that really interested me.

My daughters though had a much longer list and loved it. Really friendly and well run for such a big fest (and, yes, drunken teens and bros in basketball jerseys).
