I propose that it runs tomorrow and only my ballot is counted

just spent the past 15 minutes getting irritated by the sophie album.

Yeah it seems a lot to ask for us to formulate a ballot while following albums poll with bated breath. Maybe extending it out to the next Friday would be the shrewd move...xp

slack thompson (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 6 February 2019 18:21 (five years ago) link

(Haha Moka thanks for the help btw but are you saying that YT won't be placing so we'd better vote for it in the metal poll?) (bcz it's not nominated...)

slack thompson (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 6 February 2019 18:23 (five years ago) link

I'd somehow semi-consciously been assuming that Against All Logic was a punk band. Weird.

jmm, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 18:23 (five years ago) link

My ears are fucked so I'm not going to be able to dedicate enough listening time to join in the metal poll. Sadface.

My shit autocorrect tried to change ' sadface' to sofa emperor, which is a marginally less shit band name than Let's Eat Grandma. Topical.

Good cop, Babcock (Chinaski), Wednesday, 6 February 2019 18:24 (five years ago) link

Sofa Emperor, a few steps above Sofa King.

MarkoP, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 18:29 (five years ago) link

Sofa, So Good, So What?

Sorry.

Good cop, Babcock (Chinaski), Wednesday, 6 February 2019 18:31 (five years ago) link

Glad for Tirzah, TFS (how is that not a good name ? and that cover ! and how can you not have followed The Drones / Gareth Liddiard !!??), AAL and Kali Uchis, who could have been even higher.
Interested to hear the Gang gang dance. I'm relatively indifferent towards the rest, many bands I just haven't followed.
Couldn't get any interest from the Makaya, and I think I like jazz.
Tierra Whack will never place. Not many hopes for Simmy either.

I was re-listening to Luisa Maita and wonder how it would ever possible to conduct a 2010s poll without infinite splitting. It's ok to have boring ILM bands for a year poll, but for a decade... it would really hurt !!

anyone know what happened to Moka's graphic for #36: Meshell Ndegeocello - Ventriloquism?

gr8080, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 18:34 (five years ago) link

Quietus ran a headline that said "Let's Eat Grandma's Favorite Albums" which made me come around on the band name a little

frogbs, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 18:34 (five years ago) link

also lol that if i'd voted this year LJ an i would have had the same #1

gr8080, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 18:34 (five years ago) link

if you do enough polls eventually everyone aligns with lj once

ciderpress, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 18:35 (five years ago) link

And that was great (re McCraven). Totally get why someone would pick it as aoty.

silent as a seashell Julia (Sund4r), Wednesday, 6 February 2019 18:38 (five years ago) link

Oh, I like Tropical Fuck Storm so far, based on the first song! I was expecting some kind of arch, cold Brit-postpunk thing but this actually feels like fun, inviting noisy rock 'n' roll that gets a lot of what I enjoy about 80s Amerindie and 70s hard rock. In a weird way, I actually thought of Thin Lizzy a little!

There was an error in the scores and I deleted it, but posted the link to the correct version shortly after the result.

thank you!

gr8080, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 18:44 (five years ago) link

RIP Tal National btw. I thought that album had a shot ;_;

Only one more placement from me, it seems

slack thompson (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 6 February 2019 18:44 (five years ago) link

Jordan & Brad are both fantastic writers/posters whose opinions I particularly respect, so I'm gonna quickly respond to the below points -- purely on my own behalf, as a lover of the album, and not on behalf of "critical consensus" or however others may be rating it (cuz I can only speak for myself):

the critical consensus that sweetener is the pinnacle of both ariana's career and pop in 2018 instead of re-heated pharrell leftovers from 2005 with a few nice max martin songs is just completely baffling to me

― J0rdan S., Wednesday, February 6, 2019 8:09 AM

Even if the 3 or 4 tracks whose production arguably meets the "Pharrell leftovers" description bug you for that reason -- and I admit it took me a few beats to get into those -- Ariana's work on those tracks does not sound "leftover" from anything. As for Max, the album does have a few "nice" songs that he worked on ("GIAW," "Everytime"), plus an absolutely outstanding one ("NTLTC"). Beyond that, the songs in the album's final stretch (plus "R.E.M." and a few others) meet neither description, and are as great as anything she's recorded. "Get Well Soon" is absolutely a pinnacle of her career! (not to mention "pop in 2018")

sweetener so dramatically worse than dangerous woman i still can't believe ppl rate it so high

― jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, February 6, 2019

Dangerous Woman is a terrific album, but I personally love Sweetener even more, because -- (a) its high points are even higher for me, and (b) its lyrics are stronger and I guess more "personal"/interesting (DW's somewhat generic lyrics are its Achilles heel, IMO).

i stan corrected (morrisp), Wednesday, 6 February 2019 18:45 (five years ago) link

Popcore conquers all!!

That said I think gr80 and I have aligned before. Richard Dawson and that Oranssi Pazuzu track iirc

My favorite thing TFS released in 2018 was their wild cover of "Stayin' Alive."

Chris L, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 18:47 (five years ago) link

Gr80 was a proponent of the Botanist album as well

slack thompson (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 6 February 2019 18:49 (five years ago) link

Atlantic Black is an especially great bit of the McCraven album I'm finding

imago, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 18:50 (five years ago) link

no. 1 either gonna be the 1975, low, or kacey imo, big maybes for mitski, robyn, and beach house too

regardless i am rooting for aviary both for its merits and for the potential lj meltdown

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 6 February 2019 18:54 (five years ago) link

three times I sat through that album, three times. biblical

imago, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 18:56 (five years ago) link

would love aviary to win, but can’t really see it happening

goats eat grandma (NickB), Wednesday, 6 February 2019 18:58 (five years ago) link

Low would be an amazing winner but it's gonna be kacey

bhad bundy (Simon H.), Wednesday, 6 February 2019 19:00 (five years ago) link

Kacey would be an amazing winner but it's gonna be the 1975

Thank you ! Well worth tracking.

no 1 has to be kacey surely

||||||||, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 19:02 (five years ago) link

the 1975 had what seven songs in the top eight on the tracks countdown, or something terrible like that? i figure it's gotta be them.

omar little, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 19:03 (five years ago) link

I #1spotted Aviary without a second thought. I'd be really happy if it was Musgraves. The rest can get lost in the storm.

Nabozo, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 19:03 (five years ago) link

FM! and/or ASTROWORLD possible for the top 20? I will be disappointed if Whack World does not make it.

Indexed, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 19:04 (five years ago) link

vince & travis aren't getting higher than earl or push

lowercase (eric), Wednesday, 6 February 2019 19:06 (five years ago) link

I was expecting to see Sarah Davachi, Nao, and Nadah el Shazly in the top 77, but it doesn't seem very likely any of them would've made it this high. :(

Where do you stand on Nick Cave karaoke?

Matt DC, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 19:39 (five years ago) link

on its throat preferably

||||||||, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 19:40 (five years ago) link

I'm thinking we could have the same top two as Pitchfork (Kacey and Mitski) but with the albums swapped round. I also have a feeling Autechre are going to do better than people expect. I could see them doing a Ten Love Songs and getting a good amount of number one votes.

I just can't see The 1975 winning. If the last album only made number seven, I'd be surprised if this one was higher as several people thought it was disappointing as a whole.

kitchen person, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 19:40 (five years ago) link

Oh wow "Atlantic Black" on Universal Beings. First time listener to McCraven.

Indexed, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 19:41 (five years ago) link

It's going to be really underwhelming when Robyn wins.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 19:42 (five years ago) link

I was expecting the Cavern of Anti-Matter album to make the 77 given the last one did and Hormone Lemonade got a lot of love early on in 2018, but no way it's Top 20. So, that's my official guess for #78, ulysses. However, secretly hoping Yves Tumor got 78'd as that record irritated the hell out of me.

Some surprises in today's section. Never heard of McCraven or AAL, will check those out ASAP.

i don't really think this is true

it's less good than their last one but has more momentum and goodwill behind it, i can see it happening

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 6 February 2019 19:47 (five years ago) link

I sneakily suspect Low could win because it was my #1 and I've never been a Low stan. There must be others like me.

i hate to be like they're surprisingly boring for the band name but they're surprisingly boring for the band name
