my own dress was from a proper wedding shop run by a slightly mad woman and it was from a designer who had out-there stuff. it was just a bodice and fishtail skirt in ivory but the bodice was rad with ribbons and pearls. it came with these flouncy separate sleeves that were awful and I did not wear but still crack me up.

Congrats. :). I wore a very simple off the shoulder satin bridesmaid’s dress that I ordered in off-white. It was gorgeous and not fussy and only about $200. Bridesmaid’s dresses are definitely something to look into if you want something less expensive and simpler than a traditional gown. If I could do the whole thing over again that dress is one of the few things I wouldn’t change!

While you are shopping/mulling over non-wedding dresses you should look at Outnet. That is where I got my dresss from. Not sure what your style is but they have some really nice designer dresses under $300 that might inspire.

i have never gotten married, but i do have a funny wedding dress anecdote from a friend, who had a small, informal, city hall type wedding to her long-time boyfriend -- pretty much it was them and their parents who were all nice normal Midwestern people. Anyway, so my friend is looking for non-wedding wedding dresses and thinks, "ok fine, i will use stupid pinterest to bookmark dress pictures" ... unaware that pinterest was set to automatically post to facebook. So she was mortified to learn that all her cool sound artist and musician friends saw a deluge of posts from her of pinterest pics of dresses

i think i might have told her, "at least you weren't using pinterest to decide on honeymoon lingerie"

omg lol @ that mistake

Or to look at hentai.

Thank you everyone, you’ve given me so much to think about and look into and I feel really happy and justified in what I want to do now. :) kinder I don’t mind you being invested at all!

xp - she felt like dying at the time, because most of her social media friends were nerdy guys

aw i hope she wasn't TOO hard on herself -- she didn't do anything wrong!

two months pass...

gyac how is it going?

I came across this website and have no idea about where it is or if it's legit or the prices but these are wild

btw I imagine you've already looked at Coast and Phase Eight but there's some nice stuff on there

kinder, Saturday, 6 April 2019 22:39 (five years ago) link

Hi! It’s funny you should bump this today because I think I bought my wedding dress? Work meant I hadn’t really been looking looking (although I did check phase eight & although they have some gorgeous stuff, nothing that jumped out to me). Weirdly though earlier I was on ASOS of all places - like seriously - and saw this & so I guess I’m seeing what it’s actually like on. But I definitely thought of this thread cos I was looking at bridesmaids dresses :)

I love it. Beautiful.

xpost I would totally wear that pistachio macaroon.

Peach marshmallow for me

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Sunday, 7 April 2019 01:45 (five years ago) link

Omg those dresses!! I love so many of them. I’d probably wear any of them if they were in front of me but paying for them is a different story. Still, what lovely dresses!! Enchanted Forest and Cappucino were faves iirc

As usual, there’s no shortage of clothing I’d love to wear, but very little I’m interested in paying for.

I like all the ones with stars on them.

I think I'd go for the Goth Fondant but with the sleeve type/shape from the coconut & tchaikovsky -- nah, i have way too many black dresses -- crap, ok, real answer -- midnight cake

sarahell, Monday, 8 April 2019 16:04 (five years ago) link

Those are magical, I love them (even the aesthetically questionable ones). And tbh by wedding dress pricing standards those aren't *that* much, are they? Not that I subscribe to any such standards.

Peach Marshmallow for total ruffle insanity btw, and Sucre a la Creme for the reception.

In my life, I have now constructed an Instagram-ready capsule wardrobe for my trip to Portugal in less than two weeks, and it's disgustingly hip and current and all black and white and soft rose + grey colors. Pop of yellow for the purse. I'm obsessed. Pleasantly.

I'm so deep into instagram viewing everyone else's travel pics with the hashtags of places we're going, I feel like I've already been there. I need to go on vacation more often.

Also yerac I just want you to know that I've privately decided that you're probably a spy--because of the astonishingly wide range of things you're knowledgeable about, and your travel schedule, and your generally high ability to roll with whatever comes. Out of everyone I know I'm pretty sure you're most likely to secretly be an international person of mystery. Not to blow your cover or anything.

I'm currently Instagramming pictures of our recent trip to the Algarve so there's a chance you're stumbling upon some of my over-the-top travel hashtags. Would love to see your wardrobe!

I tried creating a pared-down capsule wardrobe recently, but it dismally failed within about a week and anyway, I'm not sure how many capes and silk dressing gowns masquerading as outerwear I could have realistically assumed a capsule wardrobe needed. One day I'm sure I will be able to distinguish between what clothes I need and what fabric is the most maximalistically pretty.

Speaking of which, my favourite of those dresses is the 'Jardin Thé'.

alrakis morissette (tangenttangent), Monday, 8 April 2019 16:41 (five years ago) link

lol thanks for the heads-up! I don't think we're going to get to the Algarve, tbh, but we're planning on Porto, Sintra, Lisbon, and then Merida, SP on the way back. It won't be warm enough for the beach most likely although I suspect this 8-day trip is just going to make me want to go back for a month!

i went absolutely bananananananas planning my wardrobe for a recent trip! i think i brought just enough clothing, but it was enough that our 1 bag had to be checked. long story short, we wound up missing our flight and i spent about 40 min in a total breakdown blaming myself for bringing too many clothes. i came to my senses and it did not discolor memories of my trip and all that was good about it BUT i wish i hadn't wigged so hard about it.

anyway these posts remind me that obsessive and extensive travel costuming is normal and the only person blaming me for caring too much about my clothes was ME :(

it's all ok now though

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Monday, 8 April 2019 17:41 (five years ago) link

fwiw i wore the most amazing dress i've ever gotten at a thrift store and felt great in it for the whole day/night that i wore it. that alone was worth the cargo.

i'll text it to you!
i only have a photo of the dress in a group pic and you can't see it very well but it was magnificent

Magnificent dress is a decent recompense for missing a flight, I’d say. Glad your trip remained intact!

marzipan milkshake for my ice queen wedding then Royal Sundae or Spumoni as a guest (not that either suits my shape in the slightest)

kinder, Monday, 8 April 2019 18:59 (five years ago) link

What's a capsule wardrobe? I'm guessing like "small" but as someone who packs one pair of trousers and three shirts for a week's holiday I don't know why you need an extra term for just not having much?

My other guess is just dressing like the band Capsule, which in my head is much better:

Yeah it’s basically a pared down number of items that can all be worn together in different combos to maximize the number of outfits.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 8 April 2019 20:50 (five years ago) link

Ah, okay, the combo thing makes sense! I was thinking somewhere along those lines but I'm not into fashion and only ever wear brown so my brain didn't quite reach it.

emil.y, Monday, 8 April 2019 20:55 (five years ago) link

Yes please do imagine me making air quotes over that term of art because I also was like

Lol at the other reading of Capsule wardrobe - I want to make one like that!

I get the vibe, in orbit. Love that oversized shirt, though it’s the kind of thing I could never pull off.

alrakis morissette (tangenttangent), Monday, 8 April 2019 20:57 (five years ago) link

xp to self: ...WTF when I started to realize it was a life-style THING that people put on IG and Pinterest and so on. I guess I should have known. But I've gone down the rabbit hole a bit on this one, in what I hope continues to be a "fun" way.

There's more Italy than necessary. (in orbit), Monday, 8 April 2019 20:58 (five years ago) link

I can see it being fun - I think my "non-fashiony person" status leads to people thinking I'm sneery about it all, but clothing can be great for creative expression and I'm never going to shit on that.

emil.y, Monday, 8 April 2019 21:03 (five years ago) link

I guess I do get a bit sneery at fashion as a set of rules, especially one that constantly changes in order to maximise profit, but that's a more understandable reaction, right?

emil.y, Monday, 8 April 2019 21:06 (five years ago) link

Yeah of course! :D I was getting really caught up in a very homogeneous set of "looks" that's portrayed on other people's soc meedz and trying to follow Porto #streetstyle or w/e.

emil.y, this is sort of a weird long shot but have you checked out the clothes at Uoozee.com? I like their kooky comfy aesthetic.

dressing as i please is one of the few pleasures in life that i indulge in to my desired degree, 100%

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Monday, 8 April 2019 21:26 (five years ago) link

xp to io: I had not, just had a little browse and there's some good brown jumper style stuff in there, for sure. Some of the other stuff reminds me a little of dark mori style (I confess I only read about this on twitter the other day, I'm pretty into it but think I'd look more 'hobo' in it than cool and witchy).

apparently theres a variation of mori girl fashion called dark mori and it literally what an actual witch would wear pic.twitter.com/2Z5utAXQCX

Picking and packing clothing for travel is extremely high stress, especially if the weather will be hot. Which is why I prefer traveling to cold places.

just1n3, Monday, 8 April 2019 21:29 (five years ago) link

digging the dark mori witch look in moderation. i need to go in and out of dark witch mode.

there aren't many non-self-destructive things i could do that would bring me as much real satisfaction as wearing what i want when i want.

speaking of dresses, the dress i mentioned above is sort of an autumn-colors forest maiden halter dress (i wore a crop top under it so it was more like a dirndl?) with lace accents, a tulle underskirt, a corset back, and a giant bow that ties in the back. it's not something i could imagine anyone else i know wearing but it was there waiting for me! perfect condition, could be handmade? wearing it on a trip was SO delightful and i enjoyed it immensely. i didn't even feel unchill in my crazy dress because it was totally comfortable. even thinking about it makes me mildly happy.

agree about packing being stressful. i am always cold and have a pathological need to feel fly on vacation.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Monday, 8 April 2019 21:37 (five years ago) link

also now i have a bunion that i have to baby so that makes it harder! boo

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Monday, 8 April 2019 21:39 (five years ago) link

I had never heard of this dark mori but I think I like it. Cozy goth otm.

I also sometimes get fb adverts for an insanely expensive line of clothing by a company called Demobaza. I think I can accurately categorize their style as "Burning Man" but I also kind of love it for the post-apocalyptic sci-fi martial arts warrior urchin vibe.

I was more thorough looking through the meringue dresses. I kind of really want Noisette for regular life.

I take approximately the same things with me everywhere I travel. No jeans (too heavy), one super casual outfit for lounging or to get destroyed, the rest versatile enough for almost anything else you would want to do. I can manage about a month in one carry-on and that's even with me bringing a small amount of kitchen stuff.

xpost inorbit being completely detached from talking about work or referencing ever having to be at work makes people think you do covert things or have a large trust fund. I get both of those even at the places I am actively working at. Maybe I am just super shady.
