hadn't heard either of these before, but will quibble about Tropicalia label anyway

oh?

i was going to call it "psychedelic samba showdown", would that have been more apt, do you think?

the late great, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 16:57 (five years ago) link

yes, definitely!
Tropicalia S/D, Classic or Classic, etc.

ok i’ll ask a mod to change the title

maybe it's my pitiful portable picnic player, but the Tribo Massahi is so dense. sometimes sounds like two records playing.

I really like Santo's Krishnanda. It's short and sweet and has a groovy vibe that plays through as an album.

xp agreed about how weird that record sounds, I get Paebiru vibes from it??

i didn't hear either of them until last year, no biggie

yeah you should be proud that you now know about these two incredible albums

the late great, Saturday, 9 February 2019 06:32 (five years ago) link

holy shit that Pedro Santos album is amazing

flappy bird, Saturday, 9 February 2019 06:58 (five years ago) link

yes it is

i was convinced for a long time that i preferred the more "freaked out" sound of tribo massahi but krishnanda has really been hitting the spot lately

good use of sound effects in both

last night at work i listened to both of these for the first time.

both are wonderful but i would have voted for tribo massahi. "kirshnanda" is a very heavy record and i'm certain that further listens will reveal many things. but "estrelando embaixador" just blew me away right away, a new favorite. i love the heavy reverb call-and-response vocals (reminiscent of "os afro-sambas" imo) and the very american r&b inspired bass playing.

what's up for vol. 2 ?

how about "onda nova do brasil" by luiz eca & sagrada familia vs. quarteto em cy's 1972 s/t? or jards macale's "so morto" vs. jose mauro's "obnoxious"?

or something else, i don't really know that much about mpb
