really want to see The Favourite, the movie just looks like it's so lush and bizarre. And Rachel Weisz is super ill imo.

haven't seen The Favourite yet. Does it have the strange, dyspeptic quality of all of his other films? I enjoyed Dogtooth, Lobster, Sacred Deer

Dan S, Tuesday, 5 February 2019 19:29 (five years ago) link

Sort of, but palatable enough to Academy voters.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 5 February 2019 19:31 (five years ago) link

i found his usual mode too diluted and swamped by lace here, but others differ

ie i saw his Kinetta from 14 years ago, a nascent work, on Sunday and it was better

xp

Roma
The Favourite
Blackkklansman
Black Panther

The other three are v much not my thing

Ward Fowler, Tuesday, 5 February 2019 19:33 (five years ago) link

Yeah, this is diluted Lanthimos, especially in the wake of Sacred Deer.

which is why it's the first film of his KJB didn't hate!

I expect another about face next year when he just films a vivisection for two and a half hours.

"Diluted" in the sense that costume dramas tend to dull sharp blades, but the fisheye and script compensate.

as you know, fisheye annoyed me endlessly

Can now add Vice and Bohemian Rhapsody to the bottom of this list and can also say that the latter is actively bad

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

saw all 8 of these in the last two weeks! (Roma again, this time in a theater)

Dan S, Thursday, 21 February 2019 01:18 (five years ago) link

Roma was the one for me, but I also really loved The Favourite, that final scene just wrapped it up so well I thought

Dan S, Thursday, 21 February 2019 01:24 (five years ago) link

Black Panther 7/10
BoRhap 6/10
Roma 6/10
Green Book 3/10 -- I only watched it because another movie was sold out

voted for The Favourite, which I haven't seen but I love the director's other movies.

adam the (abanana), Thursday, 21 February 2019 02:05 (five years ago) link

everything about Roma was masterful I thought, it was beautiful. I loved the super long takes with slowly shifting camera. the story that seemed incidental at first slowly gathered heft, and the acting performances that felt remote on a tv screen were amazing to view in a theater

Wow, the Oscar's board of directors was right! No one DOES care about the Oscars anymore.

zama roma ding dong (Eric H.), Friday, 22 February 2019 01:28 (five years ago) link

ha ha!

Dan S, Friday, 22 February 2019 02:13 (five years ago) link

If BlacKkKlansman can't do better than show here, I guess it really will end up going to Green Book or Roma.

zama roma ding dong (Eric H.), Friday, 22 February 2019 02:43 (five years ago) link

yeah I think those are the two most likely to win. it would be awful if it were Green Book in my opinion

I guess The Favourite could be considered watered-down Lanthimos, but it was accessible and had a great screenplay, stellar acting, beautiful costumes and production design (those Hatfield House interiors were something), and amazing cinematography. It’s my favorite Lanthimos film yet

Dan S, Friday, 22 February 2019 02:51 (five years ago) link

loved those fish-eye views of characters marching through corridors

Dan S, Friday, 22 February 2019 02:52 (five years ago) link

all those candles. I kept thinking they were going to burn the place down

"fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck"
