really want to see The Favourite, the movie just looks like it's so lush and bizarre. And Rachel Weisz is super ill imo.

haven't seen The Favourite yet. Does it have the strange, dyspeptic quality of all of his other films? I enjoyed Dogtooth, Lobster, Sacred Deer

Sort of, but palatable enough to Academy voters.

i found his usual mode too diluted and swamped by lace here, but others differ

ie i saw his Kinetta from 14 years ago, a nascent work, on Sunday and it was better

I expect another about face next year when he just films a vivisection for two and a half hours.

"Diluted" in the sense that costume dramas tend to dull sharp blades, but the fisheye and script compensate.

Roma was the one for me, but I also really loved The Favourite, that final scene just wrapped it up so well I thought

voted for The Favourite, which I haven't seen but I love the director's other movies.

everything about Roma was masterful I thought, it was beautiful. I loved the super long takes with slowly shifting camera. the story that seemed incidental at first slowly gathered heft, and the acting performances that felt remote on a tv screen were amazing to view in a theater

If BlacKkKlansman can't do better than show here, I guess it really will end up going to Green Book or Roma.

yeah I think those are the two most likely to win. it would be awful if it were Green Book in my opinion

I guess The Favourite could be considered watered-down Lanthimos, but it was accessible and had a great screenplay, stellar acting, beautiful costumes and production design (those Hatfield House interiors were something), and amazing cinematography. It’s my favorite Lanthimos film yet
