I take the above poster's point about the variety of this year's BP nominees, and Roma, despite my personal feelings about it, is certainly an unusual film to be up for the top prize. But I still see a lineup of biopics, historical dramas, social issues and a throwback to old Hollywood, even if some of these particular takes are unique (not having seen The Favourite, I'm guessing its a different animal than Howards End). All the nomination of Black Panther does is remind me that Airport and The Towering Inferno were BP nominees.

gonna throw Spike a bone here
this really is the worst BP lineup in recent memory. Only ones I really liked were BlacKkKlansman and The Favourite.
A Star is Born was good for what it was. Green Book was good judged against 90s Farrelly Brothers comedies, but BP? Gtfo
I hated Roma and Vice.
Didn't see Black Panther or Bohemian Rhapsody.

lol I never even heard of Green Book before this thread
only two I have seen on this are BlacKKKlansman (p good) and Black Panther (fell asleep watching it on an airplane), and I feel safe in assuming the only other one I even want to see (The Favourite) is better than both of those lol

The Favourite >>> BlacKkKlansman >>>>>>>>>> Roma > Black Panther

Disbelief at Widows getting zero noms, i'll bet money that's the one that people lose their shit over in years to come, like Bo-Rap gets a bunch and Widows gets none? Fuck outta here. You have to wonder what world the Academy lives in where there's such a disparity between what the people like and what is considered to be good.
Decent list here of great movies that got no noms *at all*; Mean Streets, Groundhog Day, His Girl Friday, Harold And Maude, In The Mood For Love...

Widows was completely pedestrian & didn't deserve any nominations. Neither did BoHo, but people certainly liked it more, or, more people liked it than Widows.

really want to see The Favourite, the movie just looks like it's so lush and bizarre. And Rachel Weisz is super ill imo.

haven't seen The Favourite yet. Does it have the strange, dyspeptic quality of all of his other films? I enjoyed Dogtooth, Lobster, Sacred Deer
― Dan S, Tuesday, 5 February 2019 19:29 (five years ago) link
Sort of, but palatable enough to Academy voters.

i found his usual mode too diluted and swamped by lace here, but others differ
ie i saw his Kinetta from 14 years ago, a nascent work, on Sunday and it was better
xp

Yeah, this is diluted Lanthimos, especially in the wake of Sacred Deer.

I expect another about face next year when he just films a vivisection for two and a half hours.

"Diluted" in the sense that costume dramas tend to dull sharp blades, but the fisheye and script compensate.

Can now add Vice and Bohemian Rhapsody to the bottom of this list and can also say that the latter is actively bad

saw all 8 of these in the last two weeks! (Roma again, this time in a theater)

Roma was the one for me, but I also really loved The Favourite, that final scene just wrapped it up so well I thought

Black Panther 7/10BoRhap 6/10Roma 6/10Green Book 3/10 -- I only watched it because another movie was sold out
voted for The Favourite, which I haven't seen but I love the director's other movies.

everything about Roma was masterful I thought, it was beautiful. I loved the super long takes with slowly shifting camera. the story that seemed incidental at first slowly gathered heft, and the acting performances that felt remote on a tv screen were amazing to view in a theater

If BlacKkKlansman can't do better than show here, I guess it really will end up going to Green Book or Roma.
― zama roma ding dong (Eric H.), Friday, 22 February 2019 02:43 (five years ago) link
yeah I think those are the two most likely to win. it would be awful if it were Green Book in my opinion
I guess The Favourite could be considered watered-down Lanthimos, but it was accessible and had a great screenplay, stellar acting, beautiful costumes and production design (those Hatfield House interiors were something), and amazing cinematography. It’s my favorite Lanthimos film yet
