Pretty OT, but I'm listening to the albums list and just realized Andrew W.K. is basically a 'roided out Neil Diamond.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Tuesday, 5 February 2019 16:47 (five years ago) link

there are lots and lots of good lines on the album

xp to me

i didn't like this noname as much as the last one but it's good

Mordy, Tuesday, 5 February 2019 16:51 (five years ago) link

The Noname album is another good record I need to spend more time with.

Gavin, Leeds, Tuesday, 5 February 2019 16:51 (five years ago) link

telefone is better, but it's better than most things

simmy simmy ya, simmy yam simmy yay (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 5 February 2019 16:52 (five years ago) link

I kept trying to get into the Noname album, but it just felt kinda slight and sketch-like.

jaymc, Tuesday, 5 February 2019 16:54 (five years ago) link

good album but not as essential as either phoebe bridgers or julien baker's solo stuff imo

Mordy, Tuesday, 5 February 2019 16:54 (five years ago) link

disagree, it's absolutely on par

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 5 February 2019 16:55 (five years ago) link

significantly better than the second JB album! I saved my vote for "Bite the Hand"

also, best live show I saw last year

bhad bundy (Simon H.), Tuesday, 5 February 2019 16:55 (five years ago) link

voted for Noname, but if i see another fucking review mention the "my pussy wrote a thesis on colonialism" line, im gonna flip the shit

Your sweetie-pie-coo-coo I love ya (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 5 February 2019 16:55 (five years ago) link

boygenius ep maybe slightly less good than the lucy dacus record that came out this year but overall an embarrassment of riches for an ep

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 5 February 2019 16:56 (five years ago) link

Never listened to Boygenius because of that dumb Pitchfork headline.

MarkoP, Tuesday, 5 February 2019 16:56 (five years ago) link

i haven't heard the dacus record i should def check it out

Mordy, Tuesday, 5 February 2019 16:57 (five years ago) link

Dacus record is great and I feel bad that I didn't vote for it

bhad bundy (Simon H.), Tuesday, 5 February 2019 16:57 (five years ago) link

Great EP.

boygenius discussion here:
Julien Baker - Sprained Ankle, my god

(Paul Ponzi's post still makes me laugh, sorry.)

Jeff W, Tuesday, 5 February 2019 16:58 (five years ago) link

oh yeah this is already def my thing 30 seconds into the first track why didn't i listen to this before / vote for this?

Mordy, Tuesday, 5 February 2019 16:58 (five years ago) link

this is already feeling like getting to the bridgers album a year late

Mordy, Tuesday, 5 February 2019 16:58 (five years ago) link

congrats mordy, historian is amazing

i didn't vote for it either but like... my top 25 is stacked imo, it was hard

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 5 February 2019 16:59 (five years ago) link

i listened to "night shift" the other day and was just extremely knocked out over what a great piece of songwriting it is

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 5 February 2019 17:02 (five years ago) link

great record

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 5 February 2019 17:04 (five years ago) link

Really surprised to see Noname this low. Such a great album. My third vote to place.

Haven't checked out the Domenique Dumont album yet. Le Soleil Dans Le Monde was one of the standouts on the Spotify playlist. Agree with the people about how great the EP was from a couple of years ago.

I couldn't really get into Boygenius as much as I wanted to. That goes for the solo work of Julien Baker and Phoebe Bridgers too (beyond a couple of tracks). I really came round to the Lucy Dacus album in December. Wonder if she has a chance of making it? I thought Night Shift would be on the tracks list for sure.

lol yes seeing this line quoted again and again like it was genius may have turned me on the album, which I wanted to like after Telefone

rob, Tuesday, 5 February 2019 17:05 (five years ago) link

I can't imagine Dacus outranking the Boygenius EP :(

bhad bundy (Simon H.), Tuesday, 5 February 2019 17:06 (five years ago) link

Lots of albums today I vaguely remember being released that I didn't hear much about and consequently slept on.

i can, if only bc it appeared on 100000 year-end lists

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 5 February 2019 17:08 (five years ago) link

Didn't vote for Noname in the end - it felt very slight and I didn't revisit enough. It's probably me.

The Boygenius record is fantastic; the first of mine to place.

Good cop, Babcock (Chinaski), Tuesday, 5 February 2019 17:09 (five years ago) link

Would I like Lucy Dacus if I like Pheobe Bridgers and one of the songs off the Boygenius ep that I heard in my dads car on 6music that one time?

Oor Neechy, Tuesday, 5 February 2019 17:10 (five years ago) link

Phoebe Bridgers solo album is in hindsight my favorite album of 2017. Instead I got a 2018 listening to that for the first time AND the Boygenius work.

Boygenius EP very much feels like an EP, it lacks heft and mass, but it's great, sometimes amazing. They fit together but obviously work very differently with sounds and lyrics, Bridgers blunt specificity, Baker's epic gloom, it's a potent mix and I think they can do even greater things together later on.

abcfsk, Tuesday, 5 February 2019 17:10 (five years ago) link

haha same here re hearing it a year late. I blame mordy.

Oor Neechy, Tuesday, 5 February 2019 17:12 (five years ago) link

wish i enjoyed that laurel halo more but it didn't really stick for me at all

my name is leee john, for we are many (NickB), Tuesday, 5 February 2019 17:13 (five years ago) link

why do you blame me? i'm on the same schedule as all ya'all. blame brad.

Mordy, Tuesday, 5 February 2019 17:13 (five years ago) link

ok lj "apperception" -> "parody warning" -> "fortune's daughter" is a hell of a run

wish there was a little more space in the opening three tracks and maybe generally

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 5 February 2019 17:13 (five years ago) link

i talk about all of these records in the years they come out, pay attention

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 5 February 2019 17:14 (five years ago) link

toooooo looooooow

so fuckin' good, I played two tracks from this on the radio yesterday

sleeve, Tuesday, 5 February 2019 17:16 (five years ago) link

excellent!

bhad bundy (Simon H.), Tuesday, 5 February 2019 17:16 (five years ago) link

GOOD MORNING

sleeve, Tuesday, 5 February 2019 17:17 (five years ago) link

It's definitely an improvement over Title TK and Mountain Battles. I got a bit burned out on it when it came out after hearing it at work so many times. Probably time to revisit.

kitchen person, Tuesday, 5 February 2019 17:18 (five years ago) link

I loved the Foxing album despite the emo-y vox

"Slapstick" is a great tune

. (Michael B), Tuesday, 5 February 2019 17:23 (five years ago) link

voted for this one, too low

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 5 February 2019 17:25 (five years ago) link

This is my favorite Laurel Halo album by a quite a bit. I love the jazzy moods she explores. Reminds me a bit of Miles Davis stuff like "He Loved Him Madly"

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Tuesday, 5 February 2019 17:25 (five years ago) link

ooh interest piqued

sleeve, Tuesday, 5 February 2019 17:25 (five years ago) link

Does she sing on this one?

pomenitul, Tuesday, 5 February 2019 17:26 (five years ago) link

no

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 5 February 2019 17:26 (five years ago) link

Then I'll have to check it out. I very much enjoyed Chance of Rain.
