Weirdly enjoying Courtney Barnett this morning after posting that I found her dull.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Monday, 4 February 2019 16:19 (five years ago) link

I must be hitting some of the more peppy tracks.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Monday, 4 February 2019 16:20 (five years ago) link

I liked KKB's cover of "rock n'roll star"

. (Michael B), Monday, 4 February 2019 16:23 (five years ago) link

I'm worried the KKB album won't be as fun as Only Acting. Is it?

I was worried about this but was proven wrong. It's more fun.

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 4 February 2019 16:28 (five years ago) link

Oh yeah!

Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 4 February 2019 16:28 (five years ago) link

Heck yes! Also, I think I forgot to vote for this, so it should have placed higher.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 4 February 2019 16:28 (five years ago) link

This opening stretch has been largely fantastic.

bhad bundy (Simon H.), Monday, 4 February 2019 16:29 (five years ago) link

Never heard of this one, sounds intriguing.

Matt DC, Monday, 4 February 2019 16:30 (five years ago) link

WC seems like a band I should be listening to.

jmm, Monday, 4 February 2019 16:30 (five years ago) link

nm, I did vote for it. 👍

Johnny Fever, Monday, 4 February 2019 16:31 (five years ago) link

I keep meaning to follow Moka's advice and listen to Bonet's previous album, but this one builds its own lovely little world

rob, Monday, 4 February 2019 16:31 (five years ago) link

That's already two I forgot to vote for! (Khadja and Senyawa.)

Good cop, Babcock (Chinaski), Monday, 4 February 2019 16:31 (five years ago) link

Ten seconds in, this is this year's L'Rain, isn't it? I mean I can hardly hope it's as good, but

imago, Monday, 4 February 2019 16:33 (five years ago) link

Childqueen was pleasant enough but never got really into it, maybe if i'd given it a few more tries?

ufo, Monday, 4 February 2019 16:33 (five years ago) link

Not that I know them, but going by the sleeve the spelling of their name is “Senyawa”, not “Senjawa”.

OTM

silent as a seashell Julia (Sund4r), Monday, 4 February 2019 16:34 (five years ago) link

ditto for me xp

nxd, Monday, 4 February 2019 16:34 (five years ago) link

Hmm, it's much less effortlessly dreamlike than L'Rain, more mannered. Will still give it a good go

imago, Monday, 4 February 2019 16:35 (five years ago) link

more minimalist than L'Rain I'd also say. in terms of stuff I know an imago likes, I'd say it's closer to Weyes Blood than L'Rain in spirit if not in genre

rob, Monday, 4 February 2019 16:36 (five years ago) link

Yeah it's not helpful to think of this in terms of L'Rain. Much more in the...I want to say Laura Mvula bracket? Enjoying it cautiously so far

imago, Monday, 4 February 2019 16:39 (five years ago) link

With a bit of Connan Mockasin thrown in

imago, Monday, 4 February 2019 16:41 (five years ago) link

I think the thing that held me back from falling deeply in love with this album is that the songs themselves are magnificent but the production lacks a fullness and warmth that would fully bring them into life. Still a total downer jam, though.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 4 February 2019 16:42 (five years ago) link

I find Bonet's singing hard to engage with, it's a bit distancing? But I'm giving the record another go now. Does she do all those sumptuous arrangements herself?

Jeff W, Monday, 4 February 2019 16:43 (five years ago) link

I find Bonet's singing hard to engage with

I never quite got why this album was often put across as alt-r&b. It's got more in common with someone like Petula Clark than Gladys Knight.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 4 February 2019 16:48 (five years ago) link

I tried a couple of times with the Bonet, but I wasn’t feeling it.

breastcrawl, Monday, 4 February 2019 16:49 (five years ago) link

Good selection of albums on those last four. I don't really get Grae & Chris, bass-driven but deconstructed and not really pleasant instrumentally, though I've reached House Call and like this one. I returned to Senyawa the other day and realized I can just enjoy them on a purely sonic level - impressive sound and ambiance. I liked what I heard from Wednesday Campanella during the campaign, I imagine they could have placed a track like Bamboo Princess rather than appear here, but why not. I don't get KKB. Childqueen is certainly very well made but it was like a nice background painting and rather forgettable to me, except for tracks like Second Wind and Delphine.

Nabozo, Monday, 4 February 2019 16:52 (five years ago) link

Not quite as good as the last one but endearingly garish in its own way

bhad bundy (Simon H.), Monday, 4 February 2019 16:54 (five years ago) link

xxp that's how i felt about Everything's Fine too, not for me at all

ufo, Monday, 4 February 2019 16:54 (five years ago) link

Bonet album is losing me a little after a decent start - kind of coasting by on atmosphere. Oh Ghost, I still need to hear this

imago, Monday, 4 February 2019 16:56 (five years ago) link

Surprisingly low but the ilm rock/metal contingent has shrunk over the past few years

Oor Neechy, Monday, 4 February 2019 16:57 (five years ago) link

imago did you listen to any of the metal poll spotify playlist?

Oor Neechy, Monday, 4 February 2019 17:00 (five years ago) link

not yet

imago, Monday, 4 February 2019 17:01 (five years ago) link

I have a friend who's been talking to me about Ghost for ages and ages, and I keep smiling to him and never heard a note of them. Melodic / hardcore swedish metal or whatever doesn't seem very appealing. That's a cool metal cover I must say.

Nabozo, Monday, 4 February 2019 17:01 (five years ago) link

Ghost is the furthest thing from hardcore.

pomenitul, Monday, 4 February 2019 17:03 (five years ago) link

It's Europop in metal's clothing tbh

imago, Monday, 4 February 2019 17:03 (five years ago) link

as long as we're talking metal

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Monday, 4 February 2019 17:06 (five years ago) link

I keep forgetting people take this band seriously.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 4 February 2019 17:06 (five years ago) link

This isn't sounding good tbh

imago, Monday, 4 February 2019 17:06 (five years ago) link

Maybe they just like fun (I wouldn't know anything about that tbf).

xp

pomenitul, Monday, 4 February 2019 17:07 (five years ago) link

Another vote of mine. I don't really like the album tho, just the marketing hook.

bhad bundy (Simon H.), Monday, 4 February 2019 17:08 (five years ago) link

Biographical storytelling aside, they could use a new singer.

pomenitul, Monday, 4 February 2019 17:10 (five years ago) link

imago, there's some proggy instrumental stuff in there that might be up your alley. See "Miasma" and "Helvetesfonster".

jmm, Monday, 4 February 2019 17:10 (five years ago) link

Wednesday Campanella only one of mine so far. I meant to check out the Jean Grae & Quelle Chris record and go back to Senyawa (not sure I ever heard the whole thing but like the stuff I have heard), but didn't get round to them in time.

I guess the Ghost here is the Scando one? Album cover is fun.

Charlie Puth will always be that dickhead who did the terrible song with Meghan Trainor, I'm just going to remain perplexed and boggling at ilx for voting for him rather than dip a toe in this potentially lethal water.

emil.y, Monday, 4 February 2019 17:10 (five years ago) link

way too low

Oor Neechy, Monday, 4 February 2019 17:11 (five years ago) link

Bold use of saxophone on the Ghost album

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Monday, 4 February 2019 17:12 (five years ago) link

Puth-Trainor is a human rights violation but the album is solid pop, emil.y.
