any predictions out there for what's going to win this year?
― my name is leee john, for we are many (NickB), Monday, 4 February 2019 13:02 (five years ago) link
Monáe?
― Tuomas, Monday, 4 February 2019 13:03 (five years ago) link
kacey musgraves seems like the most obviously likely to me but i think there's plenty of room to be surprised too
― ufo, Monday, 4 February 2019 13:05 (five years ago) link
fingers x'd for mitski
― imago, Monday, 4 February 2019 13:08 (five years ago) link
musgraves or 1975

You could always vote or start compiling a shortlist! The 2018 ILX Metal n' Heavy Rock Poll VOTING + CAMPAIGNING thread! Ballots due Saturday, Feb. 9th!
while you wait!
― Oor Neechy, Monday, 4 February 2019 13:11 (five years ago) link
as much as i love the 1975 i'd be really disappointed if they do better than they did in 2016 with a worse album but i could see it happening
― ufo, Monday, 4 February 2019 13:11 (five years ago) link
if they'd won in 2016 it would have been a triumph (though king winning certainly was anyway) but if they win this year it's just 'lol i love them but come on it was only like the 20th best album this year'
― ufo, Monday, 4 February 2019 13:14 (five years ago) link
fair points - think theyd be the favourite to win this still tbh
― nxd, Monday, 4 February 2019 13:23 (five years ago) link
I thought Christine & The Queens would have been a contender for #1, but they didn't feature strongly in the tracks so have tempered my expectations.
― Dan Worsley, Monday, 4 February 2019 13:23 (five years ago) link
It'll be an 'M': Musgraves, Monae or Mitski. For all the love I can't see 1975 reaching the top spot.
Autechre cracking the top 20 would be sweet.
― Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 4 February 2019 13:26 (five years ago) link
beach house will be up there im sure
― ciderpress, Monday, 4 February 2019 13:28 (five years ago) link
thought ILM cooled on Beach House?
― Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 4 February 2019 13:29 (five years ago) link
i don't think beach house have ever been hugely popular here but 7 is the first time i've really been into them
i expect the top 10 will probably include low, cardi b and julia holter in addition to most of those mentioned, but i could see monae just missing it, a lot of people seem to have cooled on it since its release
― ufo, Monday, 4 February 2019 13:33 (five years ago) link
I feel like most people who are going to vote for it are going to put it very high on their ballot, so I think there's a very good chance of this. I just don't know what the exact overlap between people who post in all the autechre threads and people who vote in this poll is.
― silverfish, Monday, 4 February 2019 13:34 (five years ago) link
a certain australian art-punk group have top ten ambitions imo
in fact, highest-placing australian album is an intriguing subplot
― imago, Monday, 4 February 2019 13:37 (five years ago) link
which are the others in contention? i'd be surprised if tfs don't place but i'd be even more surprised if they made top 10
― ufo, Monday, 4 February 2019 13:39 (five years ago) link
mostly i'm just hoping wednesday campanella have a respectable showing at around ~50 again like last year

― Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 4 February 2019 13:41 (five years ago) link
The 1975 would be my guess but it is very much a guess.
― Gavin, Leeds, Monday, 4 February 2019 13:41 (five years ago) link
Was surprised by hte massive 1975 love in the singles thread so I guess they win this, which would be boring!
― abcfsk, Monday, 4 February 2019 13:42 (five years ago) link
The Low album had a broader constituency than i would have expected
― rob, Monday, 4 February 2019 13:42 (five years ago) link
tfs had a massive campaign push (courtesy Simon H) with lots of receptive replies, is all
in the blue corner, rolling blackouts coastal fever
in the green corner, the beths (nz = australia, lol)
― imago, Monday, 4 February 2019 13:44 (five years ago) link
1975 album was a huge letdown after the last one and it winning would be rly terrible but that is probably my guess
I think it's way better than the last one but still don't think it should win (nor will)
― Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 4 February 2019 13:45 (five years ago) link
I predict snail mail will get a top five placing
― . (Michael B), Monday, 4 February 2019 13:45 (five years ago) link
The Amen Dunes record is the only one of his I've liked. The playing is tight.
― Your sweetie-pie-coo-coo I love ya (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 4 February 2019 13:45 (five years ago) link
oh i wasn't counting the beths and completely forgot about rbcf because that's the sort of band they are
low were definitely the most unexpected longtime act over the last few years to have a sudden critical resurgence like that but double negative is also the best of any of those albums
― ufo, Monday, 4 February 2019 13:46 (five years ago) link
1975 seems like the safest bet. They got the most total points in the tracks.
I suppose Ariana's not in the running?
― jmm, Monday, 4 February 2019 13:46 (five years ago) link
ariana will do well enough but was pretty polarising here and i'd hope she doesn't do better than she did with dangerous woman which remains underrated
― ufo, Monday, 4 February 2019 13:47 (five years ago) link
I'm more interested in finding out about good albums I haven't heard so the 77-60 range is where that's going to happen. Not that arsed which order the big albums come in.
― Oor Neechy, Monday, 4 February 2019 13:49 (five years ago) link
feel free to predict what albums you haven't heard of will finish in the 77-60 range

i haven't got around to listening to the c93 yet, usually i would be a voter for it
― ciderpress, Monday, 4 February 2019 13:56 (five years ago) link
I'd be surprised if C93 makes the top 100 tbh. Sure as hell deserves to be, but I don't vote so er
― Uptown VONC (Le Bateau Ivre), Monday, 4 February 2019 13:57 (five years ago) link
African albums that will place: Burna Boy, Sun-El Musician (which one will place highest?) and Simmy (would have placed highest if only...). Who the hell knows: Mlindo The Vocalist?, Busiswa??, Mr Eazi???, Aya Nakamura????
― breastcrawl, Monday, 4 February 2019 13:59 (five years ago) link
sun-el musician shouldn't be ruled out of top 5 speculation tbh given how much people like his stuff
― imago, Monday, 4 February 2019 14:01 (five years ago) link
i'd be really delighted if mlindo or busiswa place but i'm not getting my hopes up
― ufo, Monday, 4 February 2019 14:03 (five years ago) link
Wherever Simmy lands, add 40 imaginary points from me.

Was almost quite enjoying the Tracey Thorn record until that 8-minute thing turned up and drowned me
Ach, you cannot even listen like a girl? Fair enough; then skip it and play "Babies" and "Dancefloor" after the midpoint on that album at least.

I missed the last part of the rollout, thank you Moka, seandalai, ulysses for all the hard work!
― Dan S, Monday, 11 February 2019 07:40 (five years ago) link
I had a lot of fun following these rollouts this year. I voted. A few of the albums I voted for made it. Best thing I hadn’t heard is probably Skee Mask (I guess the name threw me off). Also excited by a preview of Szun Waves. Album I was most surprised by not making top 77 was Konoyo.
