It came out last fall, but I just found out that Caroline has done a Tygers of Pan Tang 'Complete MCA records' box set. It's 5 CDs and includes disc of BBC recordings. Some of those have been out of print and not easy to find. It is currently running $25-30 bucks online.

Esoteric Recordings is proud to announce the release of a new re-mastered limited edition boxed set of the classic debut album by VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR, THE AEROSOL GREY MACHINE.

Van Der Graaf Generator were true pioneers of so-called Progressive rock, and their impressive career spanning five decades features many ground-breaking works. Always progressing stylistically in the true sense of the word, Van Der Graaf Generator’s music remains inspirational. Formed in Manchester University in 1967, VDGG initially featured Peter Hammill (vocals, guitar), Chris Judge Smith (drums, vocals) and Nick Pearne (organ). The band signed to Mercury Records in May 1968 after the submission of a two-track demo tape. Nick Pearne departed the fold and Hammill and Smith relocated to London recruiting keyboard player Hugh Banton. By the Autumn of 1968 the band had signed a management contract with Tony Stratton-Smith and had recruited drummer Guy Evans and bassist Keith Ellis into the group. This line-up recorded the single ‘People You Were Going To’ & ‘Firebrand’ in 1968 and a session for BBC Radio One, before Chris Judge Smith departed. The ‘People You Were Going To’ single, issued in January 1969, was withdrawn just days after release due a contractual dispute with Mercury Records.

After several months of touring, including a support spot for the Jimi Hendrix Experience at the Royal Albert Hall, the band broke up after the theft of their equipment and on-going contractual difficulties. THE AEROSOL GREY MACHINE sessions began life as an intended solo album for Peter Hammill, featuring Banton, Evans and Ellis as session players. However, the album appeared in September 1969 in USA only credited to VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR as part of a contractual settlement which enabled the band to sign to Tony Stratton-Smith’s newly formed Charisma label later that year (for whom they would record a series of classic albums). A planned UK release by Mercury of THE AEROSOL GREY MACHINE (which featured a different and lavish gatefold sleeve design) was shelved after a handful of test pressings were made.

This deluxe set celebrates the 50th anniversary of the very first VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR release and features the re-mastered album, an additional CD of rare & previously unreleased tracks including two previously unreleased demos from 1967, the complete BBC Radio Top Gear session from 1968 (including the “lost” previously unreleased version of ‘Octopus’) & the single tracks ‘People You Were Going To’ and ‘Firebrand’, a facsimile 180 gram vinyl LP of “The Aerosol Grey Machine” (cut at Abbey Road Studios) housed in the impossibly rare unreleased British gatefold sleeve design, a 7-inch single of the very rare withdrawn release ‘People You Were Going To’ b/w ‘Firebrand’, a lavish book with many previously unseen photos and cuttings and an essay by Sid Smith featuring an exclusive interview with Peter Hammill and a replica 1968 poster designed by Peter Hammill.

First 6 Trower albums are so great. Dunno anything after that first run except BLT (which should be better than it is given the personnel)

Of course, these records are in every dollar bin in America, so unless they are remastered or contain bonus material or something, I'm not sure I need this

Paul Ponzi, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 00:18 (five years ago) link

I'm seeing it for around $35, which is a reasonable price to me. Back It Up is really solid; despite being from 1983, Trower makes no concessions to New Wave or anything else. Eliminator it ain't.

grawlix (unperson), Wednesday, 27 February 2019 00:27 (five years ago) link

$35 is a good deal, definitely. I was always curious about the live album released in 85. Had a cool cover iirc. Title escapes me at the moment but I recall there being an 11+ minute Bridge of Sighs

He's still touring!

ARETHA FRANKLIN

AMAZING GRACE: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS

TO BE RELEASED ON VINYL FOR THE FIRST TIME

Expanded Version Of The Queen Of Soul’s Grammy®-Winning

Gospel Album Makes Its Vinyl Debut As A Four-LP Set;

Available from Rhino On March 22

Amazing Grace – Aretha Franklin’s biggest-selling album and the best-selling live gospel album of all time – is enjoying a revival nearly 50 years after it was recorded. It follows the debut late last year of the long-awaited documentary about the making of that legendary double live album, which opened to rave reviews.

CBS will also be honouring Franklin’s career on March 10 with Aretha: A Grammy® Tribute To The Queen Of Soul. Hosted by Tyler Perry, the two-hour special features performances by Yolanda Adams, Shirley Caesar, Alessia Cara, Kelly Clarkson, Common, Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys, John Legend, Patti LaBelle, and BeBe Winans, as well as recent Grammy nominees Brandi Carlile, Chloe X Halle, H.E.R., Janelle Monáe, and SZA.

Rhino will continue to celebrate Franklin with the release of AMAZING GRACE: THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS on vinyl for the first time ever. Available on March 22, just three days before Franklin’s birthday, the set includes four, 180-gram LPs that contain both of Aretha’s transcendent performances at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church, which were recorded in Los Angeles on January 13 and 14, 1972.

Among the many signature moments that make up Franklin’s remarkable career, these performances clearly stand out as some of her finest work. They were recorded over two nights as the singer performed church standards like “Precious Memories,” “What A Friend We Have In Jesus” and “How I Got Over,” the latter written by gospel legend Clara Ward, who was listening in the audience. The performances were also attended by Franklin’s father, the famed Reverend C.L. Franklin; Clara Ward and Mother Ward of the Ward Family Singers; and Mick Jagger and Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones, who were in town recording Exile On Main Street.

Released on June 1, 1972, Amazing Grace would go on to sell more than two million copies in the in U.S. alone. It was not only the best-selling album of Franklin’s career but it still also holds the record as the best-selling live gospel album of all time. In addition, the album also earned Franklin a Grammy award, her first for Best Soul Gospel Performance.

Originally, Amazing Grace included 13 songs, plus remarks by Reverend C.L. Franklin. In 1999, the album was remastered and expanded to include all the recordings from both nights.

Initially, a documentary was planned to accompany the Amazing Grace album, but technical issues kept the film from being released for nearly 50 years. That changed last November when Amazing Grace, at long last, premiered at the 2018 DOC NYC, America’s largest documentary film festival.

In April BMG reissue five 1970s albums as separate CDs and LP box set

A selection of German group Popol Vuh's 1970s albums are set for release in April. From the 12 albums put out during that decade, the chosen few include 1970 debut album Affenstunde, alongside their third album Hosianna Mantra (1972), the fifth Einsjäger & Siebenjäger (1974), their seventh Aguirre (1975) and eleventh Nosferatu (1978). They'll be released as both individual albums on CD and as a box set of six LPs called The Essential Album Collection Vol 1. Both CD and LP reissues are remastered by band members Guido Hieronymus and Frank Fiedler, and include bonus tracks, an illustrated booklet and linear notes.

Founded in 1970 in Munich, the German group parted ways in 2001 with the death of Popol Vuh's Florian Fricke. 2011 saw a revival however, with a tribute remix album featuring Âme, Stereolab, Mouse on Mars, Thomas Fehlmann and Peter Kruder.

The Essential Album Collection Vol 1 is out on 26 April for a little over £100 via BMG.

NUMERO GROUP ANNOUNCE COMPREHENSIVE DUSTER BOXSET CAPSULE LOSING CONTACT COMING MARCH 22

ENIGMATIC EARLY 2000's SLOWCORE ICONS' DISCOGRAPHY RESCUED FROM OBSCURITY BY NORTH AMERICA'S PREMIER ARCHIVAL LABEL

LISTEN TO PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED SONG "WHAT YOU'RE DOING TO ME" HERE:
https://youtu.be/k8k96Ig2Em4

San Jose's sonic cure-all for the Y2K hangover that never materialized, Duster emerged from a cloud of lonely bong rips to take indie rock to the moon, and beyond. Scotch-taped guitars toggle between a chorus of brittle winter trees and a blanket of distorted fuzz. The low rumble of a cardboard box being kicked in a dead mall keeps pace in the background, as muffled, sung-spoken vocals ponder the great mysteries of modern mundanity. Three years of home recording accidents and blown-out 2AM studio experiments are spread across four LPs or three CDs, gathering the short-lived trio's Stratosphere and Contemporary Movement albums, 1975 EP, singles, demos, and other miscellaneous debris into one escape pod, now free to drift in the endless void of space.

In honor of the announcement, the band have shared one of the previously unreleased songs included in the set."'What You're Doing To Me' was recorded in Jason's basement in Seattle on 4-track during some lost time when we were isolated, distant stations just enduring the cold dark winds," the band state. "Recording songs and putting them in a bag to do something with them eventually is kinda how we've always done it."

Mastered from a mix of crusty cassettes, decaying DATs, and warbly analog tape, Capsule Losing Contact is housed in a moon dusted slipcase with all four albums secured in heavy weight tip-on jackets. An accompanying lyric book guides the listener through Duster's lo-fi worldview, adorned with the last gasps of an expired golden age as captured on Polaroid and disposable Kodak cameras.

From Smog Veil today:

OK FRIENDS: as many of you have surmised and/or read, all of us at Smog Veil Records have been working for the last 10 years to create the definitive Peter Laughner retrospective. I am pleased to announce that the box set is now in production, and the wait is nearly over.

In cooperation with Peter's estate and his many collaborators, the box set will contain the definitive statement of Peter's musical talents and additionally showcase his writings and the many works he created with a variety of talented friends. Smog Veil's research team has looked in every basement, attic, and corner to uncover numerous gems and we are pleased to be able to place Peter's work on display.

Many of the 56 songs contained in the release are seeing the light of day for the very first time. All songs have been carefully mastered and sonically upgraded from the best possible sources by the Grammy-nominated team of Jeff Lipton and Maria Rice at Peerless Mastering. The box set also contains a 100 page book of photos and writings. Two box set formats will be available: 5 LPs or 5 CDs, and both formats contain an identical box, book, and track listing.

Pre-sale for the box set will begin in May, and at that time, we'll reveal more details about the release. A special pre-order only bonus will be included and this bonus will not be sold separately or in stores.

I cannot thank enough the Smog Veil team and Peter's estate and collaborators for their diligence in creating this definitive work. The time and care they put into this release is without compare. Over the course of the last 10 years, the friendships we forged to make this release happen and the stories we collected reveal a history of Cleveland independent music that is the stuff of legends. I know our many fans will appreciate the release we are about to deliver and I thank each and every one of our fans for their patience.

As mentioned above, the box set is in production. Test pressings have been approved; all art and layouts have been completed by the team of Johnny Dromette and Ron Kretsch. We are awaiting the final book proofs and once those are approved, we'll be able to announce the release date.

We look forward to revealing more details, stay tuned here and at our Facebook and Twitter pages for more to come.

From ForceFieldPR---haven't yet seen a release date:

“Authentic yet often ineffable greatness that would define Silkworm’s next 11 years of activity, the reissue of In The West is a grand corrective gesture with no expiration date.”– Andrew Earles

This definitive reissue of Silkworm’s second album In the West (cmo038) marks its first appearance on vinyl.

It has been remixed from the original 2″ tape at Electrical Audio in Chicago with Steve Albini, who also engineered the original recording in 1993.

It was remastered with Matthew Barnhart at Chicago Mastering Service.

The revamped cover art is courtesy of longtime fellow traveler Mike Hoffman, Jr. Mike repurposed some elements from the original art by Adrian VanEgmond and otherwise operated in the spirit of the original packaging.

Everything visual was put together as usual by the band and David Babbitt.

Limited to 1,500 copies worldwide.

In addition to the album In The West, supplemental material for this release includes:

-A full-color insert with new liner notes by Silkworm’s Tim Midyett.

-Single-only tracks “Incanduce California” and “In The Bleak Midwinter” plus a live version of The Dream Syndicate’s “Halloween” recorded at Chicago’s Lounge Ax in 1994 join the full album on the package’s enclosed compact disc.

-Six previously unheard renditions of songs from In The West recorded direct to DAT in 1991 at Avast! Recording Company in Seattle. Download only.

-Six previously unheard live recordings of songs from In The West provided by Tim Cook. Download only.

-A full Silkworm quartet set from March 1993, recorded at Lounge Ax and made up almost entirely of songs off In The West. Download only.

In all, that’s over 2.5 hours of music!

Southern Lord announces the next CASPAR BRÖTZMANN MASSAKER reissues in the ongoing series, continuing with Der Abend Der Schwarzen Folklore and Koksofen, now confirmed for release in July. Tracks from each of the two new reissues are now posted for streaming. The outfit will also be actively performing live this summer, including supporting Sunn O))) on tour in Europe.

CASPAR BRÖTZMANN is one of the most unique and innovative guitarists of the last forty years. With his Berlin-based trio MASSAKER, he evolved a whole new autonomous approach to writing rock songs, starting from sounds that were widely considered ornamental if not detrimental "sonic waste," such as shrieking feedback and droning overtones. This plethora of sounds were arranged into tracks to sound like breaking concrete, grinding metal, or bursting glass, at once monumental and threatening, impenetrable, and hermetic, yet also archaically tender and loving.

Even today, as the art of noise has reached a level of sophistication that no one could have imagined thirty years ago, CASPAR BRÖTZMANN MASSAKER's music is resoundingly singular. Ultra-heavy riffs and beats, ominous tribal chants, and a raw physical force is conjured up by these three sinister and proud minds of their era. Their unhinged, unified stream of energy is captured on these remastered reissues and the results are thrilling.

Stream CASPAR BRÖTZMANN MASSAKER's "Bass Totem"from Der Abend Der Schwarzen Folklore HEREhttps://casparbrotzmannmassakersl.bandcamp.com/album/der-abend-der-schwarzen-folklore
and "Die Wiege" from Koksofen HERE.https://casparbrotzmannmassakersl.bandcamp.com/album/koksofen

Both Der Abend Der Schwarzen Folklore and Koksofen will be reissued via Southern Lord on June 28th, with CD, LP, and digital formats made available.

CASPAR BRÖTZMANN MASSAKER will be performing live this summer supporting labelmates Sunn O))) on their upcoming European tour dates. See all confirmed performances below and watch for additional live actions to be posted.

Originally released in 1992, Der Abend Der Schwarzen Folklore is the third MASSAKER album, released by Rough Trade Germany. According to BRÖTZMANN, the title track and "Bass Totem" are the band's most accomplished songs. It's certainly the most sonically refined of their albums, recorded during a residency over several weeks at the pastoral site of Conny Plank's studio near Cologne, and produced by Ingo Krauss and Bruno Gebhard, who had worked with the famed Krautrock producer until his death in 1987.

Der Abend Der Schwarzen also features their new drummer Danny Lommen, whom BRÖTZMANN and bassist Eduardo Delgado had headhunted at a concert with Lommen's Dutch prog-core band Gore. Lommen shared their tastes in sheer volume and presence, and, "has a completely unique sound to his drumming, "as BRÖTZMANN marvels. "He plays ultrahard and clear, with authority and no compromise, nothing, not even the most turbulent and speedy beats, sound fuzzy - a statement." This, he adds with a smile, would sometimes lead to intense moods during rehearsals, when he overpowered - no small feat - competing with the sounds of BRÖTZMANN's guitar.

The Tribe and Black Axis were still if very loosely rooted in some kind of heavy rock. Der Abend Der Schwarzen Folklore erases these residues from their genetic make-up, evolving into a free-form noise, strangely motionless like an earthquake rumble, that sounded like nothing else at the time. The opening title song gives the best example with its densely shifting chunk of howling and screaming guitar shreds and grimly determined rumbles from the bass, accented by heavy single beats or massively rattling, yet transparent outbursts from the drums. An impenetrable sense of threat fills the sound, interrupted only by breaks of skinny brooding, giving way to BRÖTZMANN's throaty growl evoking a lonely march through hostile wastelands under flaming sunsets. Culminating in an archaic choir chanting about black walls rising - a monstrous cloud of thick high-voltage tension.

BRÖTZMANN speaks of the heavy nature of the lyrics, inspired by 19th century artist Caspar David Friedrich's painting "Das Eismeer," translated to "the sea of ice," which depicts a shipwreck the icy shores of Antarctica. It deals, of course, with ideas of the sublime in nature - but also "the end of hope," as the painting was known until the sixties. And indeed, BRÖTZMANN credits his dark and brooding sounds to the uneasy times. With the wall down, the Eastern Block broken, East and West Germany were politically united but emotionally didn't share much more than a certain angst and uneasiness with respect to the future, which erupted in ugly right-wing riots and violence. BRÖTZMANN felt the rise of a black folklore that he wanted to address, though he never admitted to it at the time because, he said, he didn't want to sound like, "some naive romantic," not underestimating the music's gothic values; a weird idea, once you've listened to Der Abend Der Schwarzen.

Koksofen (which translates to "blast furnace"), originally released in 1993, has become one of MASSAKER's most popular albums. Like its predecessor, Der Abend Der Schwarzen Folklore, the album took shape in MASSAKER's rehearsal room below the Berlin subway station Schlesisches Tor, and was recorded at Conny Plank's studio near Cologne, with Plank's former associates Ingo Krauss and Bruno Gephard producing.

There's a different kind of intensity to Koksofen. The features of MASSAKER's sound are in full bloom. Mountainous noises tower up and crash down, and tormented sounds rise from ominously seething grounds, haunting the entire songscape. The feel of doom and dread hangs heavily over the five songs, and the title song rumbles, shrieks and wails, plagued by BRÖTZMANN's guttural growls of war, suffering, and death.

BRÖTZMANN recalls one anecdote from shortly after the original release whereby bassist Edu Delgado called him asking to turn on the TV, thus discovering that "Hymne" was being used as background music to a report about the death penalty in the US. A different kind of intensity indeed.

Reflecting on the album to this day BRÖTZMANN remarks "Koksofen is still a mystery to me.'' He continues, "I can still feel the troubled times in these songs." The effects are certainly potent for the listener too. And the album undoubtedly affirms MASSAKER as the fiercely original and compellingly raw musicians that they are.

Review copies of the Der Abend Der Schwarzen Folklore and Koksofen reissues will be made available in the coming days. For press inquiries in The Americas contact dave[at] earsplitcompound.com and elsewhere contact lauren[at]rarelyunable.com.

Yabby You Meets King Tubby
Walls Of Jerusalem
With Unreleased Mixes And Studio Outtakes
(Pressure Sounds) 2-LP, 2-CD

‘Walls of Jerusalem’ is a unique musical collaboration between the producer Yabby You and the legendary dub master King Tubby. The two were close friends, frequent collaborators and deep admirers of each other’s artistry. ‘Walls of Jerusalem’ was the last full-length project they worked on together. For years this release lay buried in obscurity: original copies came out, in minute quantities, on the Prophets Label in a blank, white sleeve. A later issued even misnamed the artist. Yet the music within is deep roots of the highest quality – mesmerizing tracks that illustrate Yabby You’s particular sound and spiritual vision. Disc One presents the album in its original form, showcasing King Tubby’s virtuosity as an engineer, deliberately shaping a sophisticated stereo mix to aid in the creation of a bold, artistic statement. Disc Two includes a number of never-released studio outtakes, alternate mixes and instrumental cuts of some of Yabby You’s most classic tunes. These mixes put the listener right there in the studio, complete with “chatter” between the musicians, Tubby and Yabby discovered on the master tapes, and included between the tracks of this reissue. Together, the two discs of Walls Of Jerusalem are dub and roots music of the finest order and and a major celebration of the creative genius of Yabby You and King Tubby. This Double LP is lovingly packaged with extensive sleeve notes by Diggory Kenrick. * previously unreleased + CD has two bonus tracks.

The SHJ/Smith is good. I got a promo when it first came out and still have it on a hard drive somewhere. All of SHJ's free-jazz-adjacent records are good, weird stuff.

Disappointed they didn't use the original (tapestry?) artwork for Brown Rice.

I feel like I've seen at least three different covers to Brown Rice, without ever actually hearing it.

All of these "came out" in May. in all formats, also can stream them on bandcamp:

Team Dresch
Portland, Oregon

Combining the brazenness of Riot Grrrl with the angst dirge of grunge, Team Dresch didn’t just raise the stakes of queercore: They created two near-perfect albums about longing, freedom, and belonging over guitar riffs as epic and intense as Jody Bleyle and Kaia Wilson’s poetic couplets. To paraphrase their own song, they are amazing; their words save us.

one of my favourite records, one that seems to be one of the most psychedelic records ever at a time when I'm not sure that was overly popular. Dennis Bovell's production sounds like the band is in freefall. the other 2cds are on eo fwork in progress early versions of songs from the lp and one of live tracks from various places from the time of the lp. I think the live material taht has come out over the last couple of years has been a bit later so glad to hear this is coming.

comes in several different configurat8ions this is from the 3cd version since it's the one I'll probably buy. Otherwise there are a couple of different vinyl versions.

The Vinyl and CD deluxe sets will include the debut single 'She Is Beyond Good And Evil' (also remastered).

The package will also include the 10 track album Alien Blood, and the album titled Y Live.

Alien Blood is the result of the band’s meticulous process of revisiting the original 2" tapes of their studio sessions and recordings, unearthing never-before-heard material, including the studio recording of 'Kiss The Book', gloves off version of 'We Are Time (Ricochet)', and 'Words Disobey Me (Dennis The Menace Mix)' whilst exposing the raw skeletons of iconic tracks such as the original velocity of 'Thief of Fire (Bass Addict).' Alien Blood reveals the life of Y before everything was finalized, exposing revelatory dimensions within these iconic works.

The Y Live album is an essential addendum to the original release, one that captures all the fierce urgency of The Pop Group’s live performances at the time. Comprised of Y era recordings captured at a variety of locations including New York, Manchester & Brussels – the latter on a bill with William Burroughs and Joy Division – Y Live exemplifies what had proved so thrilling about The Pop Group. A snapshot of a time when the group were sharing stages with future acolytes including Cabaret Voltaire, Linton Kwesi Johnson & Public Image Ltd, Mark Stewart describes the recordings as attempts to ‘paint the impossible’.

The Pop Group's Y regularly appears in 'Greatest Album' lists - such as Pitchfork’s Greatest Albums of the 70’s where it is listed at #35, The Wire's 100 Most Important Records Ever Made and Uncut Magazine’s 100 Greatest Debut Albums.

The Pop Group went on to release 2 further singles, We Are All Prostitutes and Where There Is A Will (Split single with the Slits) and 1 further studio album For How Much Do We Tolerate Mass Murder, before splitting up in 1981.

Mark Stewart from the band embarked on a solo career releasing his pioneering album Learning To Live With Cowardice in 1983. Gareth Sager and Bruce Smith went on to form Rip Rig & Panic alongside Neneh Cherry.

The Pop Group reformed in 2010 to tour and have since released 2 new studio albums.

The band will be touring at the end of 2019 and throughout 2020 in support of the album release."

The legit Peter Laughner box, finally:
There is a lot to dive into here with five records documenting his many musical turns, an exhaustively researched 100 page book that illustrates his life with rare pictures, friends recollections and his writings and even a 7 inch single...
Think at this late date I've got most(?) of his musical putout (and Creem writing), but on scratchy vinyl, flimsy x-gen mp3s, ancient pages etc, so maybe:

I'm not 100% sure what is on the box set that isn't on the individual 2cd sets. If you pre-order from the Planet Gong website you got free posters that looked quite good. Box set has the discs slotting into places in the cover or similar so don't have the individual lp sleeves as packaging.
I'm seeing some live sets in the box that don't appear to be available separately, also not seen a release for the BBC stuff outside the box or the dvd.
& looks like the 2cds are limited editions.
