Thermo, am I correct in that I only have 2 eligible keepers:

Mitch Haniger 28
Carl Edwards Jr 27

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Sunday, 3 February 2019 04:42 (eight months ago) link

yikes - looks that way.
the good news is Juan Soto is up for grabs!

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Sunday, 3 February 2019 05:47 (eight months ago) link

also i seem to have copy pasted the wrong opening date in the rules – opening day for age calculations is March 20.

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Sunday, 3 February 2019 05:49 (eight months ago) link

Porno For Shapiros keepers (ages as opening day):

Andy K, Monday, 4 February 2019 00:38 (eight months ago) link

can we change team names in Yahoo ourselves or do we have to run it through the commissioner

na (NA), Monday, 4 February 2019 01:12 (eight months ago) link

looks like the former. now I just have to think of something decent

na (NA), Monday, 4 February 2019 01:13 (eight months ago) link

Can do it yourself, but I will be silently judging.

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 4 February 2019 02:36 (eight months ago) link

judging because it causes confusion/extra work or just judging the quality of the name?

na (NA), Monday, 4 February 2019 17:11 (eight months ago) link

on originality, form, and how much i understand the obscure cultural reference. (it is not a lot of work, outside of keeping track, so go nuts)

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 4 February 2019 17:25 (eight months ago) link

oh ok. i don't want to make anyone's life harder but it's going to be hard to come up with a worse team name than protoschwarber

na (NA), Monday, 4 February 2019 17:54 (eight months ago) link

So – i went through all the changes this year with yahoo – and there's not much.
However, yahoo has gone and added all the top 30 prospects for every fucking team! so if you want to go ahead and add, i dunno, Bryson Brigman (the #28 prospect for the Miami Marlins) and stash him for a year or more – there is now nothing stopping you.

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 4 February 2019 18:17 (eight months ago) link

When will we be able to see all available free agents for the draft?

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, 4 February 2019 19:34 (eight months ago) link

where is the prospects list? is it linked on the fantasy page or is it via the main MLB page?

omar little, Monday, 4 February 2019 19:41 (eight months ago) link

When will we be able to see all available free agents for the draft?

– i can't enter the keepers until i have them all (involves locking the league and manually doing the last 5 rounds of the draft) – however, you can check Will's spreadsheet (2nd page) that i linked in the original post to get a fair idea of who's off the board, tho nothing is official until all picks are in.

where is the prospects list? is it linked on the fantasy page or is it via the main MLB page?
– i *think* yahoo used the mlb end-of-season top-30, so i was poking through that to make the joke about Bryson Brigman and then doubled checked the yahoo player list. but again – we can't sort through our league's available talent until after i punch in all the keep picks between Monday 11th and the draft. if i get all the selects early, i can have it done earlier (but again - i would need all of them)

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 4 February 2019 22:05 (eight months ago) link

ok Protoschwarber is now He Ain't Javy. plans to go with the full He Ain't Javy, He's My Baez were thwarted by character limits so just insert the last bit mentally

my planned keepers:
Rafael Devers (22)
Gleyber Torres (22)
Javier Baez (26)
Christian Yelich (27)
Mike Clevinger (28)

na (NA), Monday, 4 February 2019 22:18 (eight months ago) link

runner-up team names: gleyber of love, yelich again, forever and devers amen

na (NA), Monday, 4 February 2019 22:19 (eight months ago) link

gleyber of love

oh shit i just saw this thread

and i was about to name my team gleyber of love lmao

they're not booing you, sir, they're shouting "Boo'd Up" (Will M.), Monday, 11 February 2019 17:34 (eight months ago) link

Aaron Judge - 26
Mookie Betts - 26
Felipe Vazquez - 27
Nolan Arenado - 27
Wil Myers - 28

... time to draft some youngsters, i think

they're not booing you, sir, they're shouting "Boo'd Up" (Will M.), Monday, 11 February 2019 17:35 (eight months ago) link

wait, ignore that

Victor Robles - 21
Aaron Judge - 26
Mookie Betts - 26
Nolan Arenado - 27
Wil Myers - 28

Also: due to the way I save the ages (I got a list of ages, not birthdates), some of them might be slightly off -- please check w/ google before confirming! since the start date changes every year, some guys don't age a year or age 2 years between seasons (...you know what i mean, that was a terrible sentence)

you can use Gleyber of Love if you want, but he's going to be on my team

na (NA), Monday, 11 February 2019 17:56 (eight months ago) link

keeper decisions i struggled with
- not keeping willson contreras - probably not going to improve on him for catcher in the draft but i'd have to lose devers or torres to keep him (since he doesn't turn 27 until may) and they both seem potentially more valuable over the long term, especially since they're both so young
- not keeping jon gray - i keep expecting him to have a breakout season and his strikeout numbers can be gaudy when he's hot but he just hasn't been consistently good on the level of clevinger so i went with him instead

na (NA), Monday, 11 February 2019 18:08 (eight months ago) link

Will: are the times overlapping?
also: your outfield is disgusting. i hate it.

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 11 February 2019 20:07 (eight months ago) link

what do you mean by the times overlapping?

they're not booing you, sir, they're shouting "Boo'd Up" (Will M.), Monday, 11 February 2019 20:38 (eight months ago) link

your two drafts.

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 11 February 2019 20:40 (eight months ago) link

oh for the drafts! xp lol

no probably not -- the IRL one is usually around 1pm Eastern. but then we usually hang out for a while and possibly do dinner (we even have ppl drive in from out of town usually). iiiiiif it were possible to do the draft later that day, like 7pm instead of 4pm, awesome, but honestly, i'll have my laptop and my cheatsheets and shit, i might just take a chill 45m break from being super-social and be only semi-social while drafting. no need to move the day/time unless it doesn't work for others!

they're not booing you, sir, they're shouting "Boo'd Up" (Will M.), Monday, 11 February 2019 20:40 (eight months ago) link

ok, noted. thanks.

ah good i got my 2019 team name last night! say hello to Bellinger EscapePlan (i hate that character limit sooooo much)

they're not booing you, sir, they're shouting "Boo'd Up" (Will M.), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 17:27 (eight months ago) link

i just remembered i have a wedding to attend on 3/17 at 5PM PDT. What are the chances the draft could be moved to 11AM PDT?? just to cut it less close.

i realize it also still might be moved to another date per the first post in the thread...

omar little, Friday, 15 February 2019 17:38 (eight months ago) link

i don't want to move it up too much because of Will's draft, but if I move it up by an hour - it shouldn't affect him. our drafts are normally pretty quick because of the keepers – would you be able to be there for most of it (possibly in a tux) if i changed it to 12 PDT (3 EST)?

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 15 February 2019 17:48 (eight months ago) link

that'll work, thanks!

omar little, Friday, 15 February 2019 17:57 (eight months ago) link

3pm should still be okay for me... should be right around when my live one ends. my commish is giving me endless (joking, i think) shit for caring about literally any other league but 3 might actually work better, because it'll be done before we all go out for group dinner?

they're not booing you, sir, they're shouting "Boo'd Up" (Will M.), Friday, 15 February 2019 18:41 (eight months ago) link

i'm sure they're relishing the idea of being able to spectate, heckle and back-seat draft our draft!

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 15 February 2019 18:49 (eight months ago) link

hahaha oh god some of them will totally do that

we also have so many keepers/so few picks in that league, i just checked the timestamps for last year's draft, and it took... 45 minutes, lol. the league is only batters and team pitching (like team defense in football, kinda?) so it's 16 rounds, and 4 keepers, so really only 12 rounds (w/ 10 teams, and some teams have too few picks, so it ends up being... 115 total?)

we use fantrax btw, and it RULES, i'd almost recommend migrating but then we'd lose league history :(

they're not booing you, sir, they're shouting "Boo'd Up" (Will M.), Friday, 15 February 2019 18:52 (eight months ago) link

Ok – so I'm going to move the draft time up an hour. will see if a mod can edit my original post to show the new time.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, 25 February 2019 22:40 (seven months ago) link

an idea, maybe others will be into it, maybe not, but is there any chance we could determine the draft order more than an hour before the draft this year? i do kinda like the "who knows for sure" aspect of it but at the same time i will be coming fresh off another draft so the more prep i can do the better. won't be offended if nobody likes the idea, just wanted to float it. even if the order is decided, like, a day or two in advance, it'd give me the chance to set up my sheets or whatever... what do you think?

they're not booing you, sir, they're shouting "Boo'd Up" (Will M.), Tuesday, 26 February 2019 15:48 (seven months ago) link

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 26 February 2019 16:02 (seven months ago) link

they're not booing you, sir, they're shouting "Boo'd Up" (Will M.), Tuesday, 26 February 2019 16:04 (seven months ago) link

If it's a true keeper league the draft order should be the reverse standings at the end of the previous season.

francisF, Friday, 2 August 2019 21:52 (two months ago) link

How the fuck do you shoot up 7.5 points in one day this far into the season?! This shit is uncalled for.

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 5 August 2019 13:17 (two months ago) link

it's getting tight at the top again. i've got one of my clumps of starting pitching tonight but any or all of them could blow up badly (darvish at philly, stroman at atlanta, aaron sanchez at oakland ... not feeling super confident about any of those)

na (NA), Thursday, 15 August 2019 19:36 (two months ago) link

Now I know why I did better last year (ignored keepers) versus this year (keepers, most of them on the IL): it's a lot easier to ride the FA/waiver wire when you have open slots that aren't cock-blocked by dudes with ruptured testicles, etc.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Thursday, 15 August 2019 20:18 (two months ago) link

"cock-blocked by dudes with ruptured testicles" quite an image

na (NA), Thursday, 15 August 2019 20:40 (two months ago) link

yes... hopefully the Toronto sleeper agents I deployed pitch "well" tonight.

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 15 August 2019 21:00 (two months ago) link

i feel like i made some solid decisions w/r/t waiver wire pickups which have allowed me to claw all the way up to 8th place though i'm reconsidering my Jorge Soler drop (not that he could help my terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad pitching).

omar little, Thursday, 15 August 2019 21:07 (two months ago) link

I'm happy to be leading the 2nd tier (aka 3rd) again. A couple days ago I was hit with -4 pts despite this pitching line: 17.1IP, 1W, 25K, 2.60ERA, 1.04WHIP, 5K:BB, 2QS, 3SV+H!
I have missed Scherzer big time, and I'll have to finish up without Encarnacion & Gallo, looks like. I switched back to Orel Halo

francisF, Friday, 16 August 2019 00:59 (one month ago) link

I had an offensive day for the ages yesterday: 13/17, 11 R, 9 HR, 13 RBI, .481 OBP, 1.519 SLG, 10 XBH. Set the league single day record for HR, XBH, and SLG. Unfortunately all this did was make up for my offense mostly crapping the bed for the past two weeks, but still, it was a fun day.

for the 2nd time this season, 4 of my 5 keepers are on the IL:

Andujar: labrum tear (Apr 1 -> EOS). 12 games played in 2019 for my #3 pick lol
Haniger: ruptured testicle (Jun 7 -> Sept?)
Mondesi: subluxation of shoulder (Jul 16 -> Sept?). Still #2 in SBs lol!
Marquez: arm inflamation (Aug 26 -> ?)

i know that given my position it's gauche to complain about this, but javy baez and christian yelich are now both out for the rest of the season but neither are on the DL, so i can't DL them to make room for replacements, and they're both keeper-eligible so i'm not going to drop them

well, looks like the die is cast with 5 days to go. the only question is if having no pitching and being short 3 hitters will be enough to drop NA/Javy 20 points in the standings.

Happy last day everyone, I've been battling for the final podium spot for ages now. I was devastated to have had dropped to 4th recently, but somehow collected about 10 points in the last week to claim my spot for the first time! Some of those days the stats looked okay, but I'd be unexplainably +4. Funny how those numbers come together sometimes. See you at the wreath ceremony

just 5 short of the illustrious 200 club!

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 30 September 2019 13:54 (two weeks ago) link

thanks, guys! i had some good luck this season.
i also enjoyed making a big, season-impacting trade! trades are fun! losing rafael devers and (to a lesser extent) franmil reyes is probably going to hurt me in future seasons but verlander (plus darvish rebounding) really helped my pitching stats improve enough to push me into that top spot.

na (NA), Monday, 30 September 2019 14:33 (two weeks ago) link

Good job NA. Hopefully my keepers will be off the IL sometime in 2020.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, 30 September 2019 15:45 (two weeks ago) link

so there will be changes next season and also I have a suggestion I'd like to run by everyone.

new for next year:
• 3rd DL slot. with the shortened IL, there's just too many dudes inured at any given time.
• static age cut-off date to be April 1. this is instead of basing off the official opening day, which is just creating too much work/confusion since it changes yearly.
• weighted lottery draft order. basically i use a random list generator to decide the draft order every year – next year I will weight the teams so that last place gets 13 chances at first pick, 12th place gets 12 - all the way to first place getting just one entry.

bigger change I'm contemplating and might poll managers on:
adding a 6th keeper. this will be a minor leager with no MLB experience. I would add a 2nd NA slot as well for this. this would not count as an under 27 player – the only condition to being kept is that they have never played in the majors and are (obviously) available in yahoo. since they added the top 30 prospects for every team last year, this should not be a problem.
what do we think?!

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 30 September 2019 15:49 (two weeks ago) link

so you would draft someone as a prospect and then they would still have to be in the minors a year later to qualify as a keeper for that slot?

na (NA), Monday, 30 September 2019 16:09 (two weeks ago) link

aie.

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 30 September 2019 16:10 (two weeks ago) link

How good is the Yahoo! platform for true dynasty leagues (such as the slot you're proposing?). I feel like I've heard feedback in the past that the depth of their dynasty rosters is not as robust as their alternatives...

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, 30 September 2019 16:18 (two weeks ago) link

well like i said, they have the top 30 prospects for every team. i have no idea what the alternatives are like – but we're only talking one minor leaguer set aside per team, there's no way yahoo won't be able to meet our needs.

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 30 September 2019 16:22 (two weeks ago) link

Yeah that sounds pretty robust to me. I'm really angling for some of the LLWS MVPs though.
