I saw a little and it has lots of good info about classic rap songs so who cares about this list. I'ma tivo this shit over the weekend

my favorite bit so far was the "what you know" one cuz preceding it was like 30 mins worth of old joints

74 EPMD - "You Gots To Chill"
73 Black Sheep - "The Choice Is Yours"
72 J.J. Fad - "Supersonic"
71 Whodini - "Freaks Come Out at Night"
70 3(rd) Bass - "Pop Goes the Weasel"
69 Common - "I Used to Love H.E.R."

and then out of nowhere those HORNS

poetry unit (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 2 October 2008 20:42 (fifteen years ago) link

not that those old songs aren't classics or anything just that it was jarring in an awesome way when the "what you know" beat started playing out of nowhere

this show is awwwwfffuuulllllllllll. every entry turns into a mini "where are they now"....sorry I didn't want to know that one of the chicks from JJ Fad is a receptionist, I would have much rather watched and/or listened to "supersonic" and heard some more commentary from some people that know stuff about the SONG.

producers should be shipped off to E!

haven't you all heard? (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Thursday, 2 October 2008 20:59 (fifteen years ago) link

don't really care about the lsit but shocked that "The Message" isn't number one and that CREAM isn't in the top 5....i guess I'm just a purist!!!

yeah where's the cool kids

and what, Thursday, 2 October 2008 21:03 (fifteen years ago) link

xpost ^1000X yes to your initial post. Not saying I didn't enjoy watching the bits I've seen so far, but typical VH1 Best of retrospective mediocrity.

Granny Dainger, Thursday, 2 October 2008 21:05 (fifteen years ago) link

lots of good info

for real??

Granny Dainger, Thursday, 2 October 2008 21:07 (fifteen years ago) link

i was actually 100% serious about the message and cream

FTP isn't even in my top 10 PE songs, so Message would win.

Granny Dainger, Thursday, 2 October 2008 21:45 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm trying to think of 10 PE songs I like more than "Fight The Power"; I can come up with maybe 3 ("Brothers Gonna Work It Out", "Night Of The Living Baseheads", "Bring The Noise").

To those, I'd add "Can't Truss It", "Hazy Shade of Criminal", "Don't Believe The Hype", "Fear Of A Black Planet", "Rebel Without A Pause", "You're Gonna Get Yours", and "Black Steel In The Hour of Chaos". "Fight The Power" is a good song, but it doesn't stand out as a song. As a cultural event, maybe.

Peter Cetera (Euler), Thursday, 2 October 2008 22:04 (fifteen years ago) link

^co-sign. this list (and these lists in general) are heavy on "cultural event" and light on groovy tunes.

Granny Dainger, Thursday, 2 October 2008 22:06 (fifteen years ago) link

I mean I most definitely was changed for ever the first time I heard "Now That We Found Love", and I assume we all were.

Granny Dainger, Thursday, 2 October 2008 22:09 (fifteen years ago) link

Okay yeah, "Rebel Without A Pause".

I do like "Fight The Power" more than the others you listed, though.

Do you remember in middle school when we could bring in tapes to gym class and Mr Coverdill or Mr Gehrke or whoever would play them in the locker room? I brought in a tape of songs that I'd taped off the radio, and "Now That We Found Love" was totally on there.

jaymc, Thursday, 2 October 2008 22:17 (fifteen years ago) link

Dude I have a vague recollection of you playing a tape there! The gym teachers had some weird bat cave type set up that I didn't dare venture into.

Granny Dainger, Thursday, 2 October 2008 22:19 (fifteen years ago) link

I think Marky Mark might've been on that tape, too.

jaymc, Thursday, 2 October 2008 22:20 (fifteen years ago) link

If it was that MTV dance mix album, "Now That We Found Love" segued into "Good Vibrations".

Nah, it was a homemade deal: whatever was being played on the radio in late summer 1991.

Mr. Coverdill always reminded me of Jimmy Stewart. Wonder if he kicked the bucket yet.
Sorry for threadjack. Not really.
