Waiting 171 days to submit your keepers will not give you another year of control – 2019 I Love Fantasy Baseball League is open!

As always, the rules:

• total of 5 keepers
• 2 of which must be 27, 28 or 29 yrs old
• another 2 players 26 or under
• one final keeper that can be either (basically anyone under the age of 30)
• age is based on that year's opening date (May 29, this year)
• for a player to be keep-eligible he must have been drafted on draft day by your team or traded to you by a team that drafted him. that means:
• free agent/waiver pick-ups cannot be kept
• if you have less than 5 keepers, you will get an extra draft pick at the end of the draft
• have fun

by the way – last years' champ, BNW, ran away with it by a 14 point margin by the end of the season. can he do it again? (checks keepers)... not likely!

So – i went through all the changes this year with yahoo – and there's not much.
However, yahoo has gone and added all the top 30 prospects for every fucking team! so if you want to go ahead and add, i dunno, Bryson Brigman (the #28 prospect for the Miami Marlins) and stash him for a year or more – there is now nothing stopping you.

– i can't enter the keepers until i have them all (involves locking the league and manually doing the last 5 rounds of the draft) – however, you can check Will's spreadsheet (2nd page) that i linked in the original post to get a fair idea of who's off the board, tho nothing is official until all picks are in.

– i *think* yahoo used the mlb end-of-season top-30, so i was poking through that to make the joke about Bryson Brigman and then doubled checked the yahoo player list. but again – we can't sort through our league's available talent until after i punch in all the keep picks between Monday 11th and the draft. if i get all the selects early, i can have it done earlier (but again - i would need all of them)

Also: due to the way I save the ages (I got a list of ages, not birthdates), some of them might be slightly off -- please check w/ google before confirming! since the start date changes every year, some guys don't age a year or age 2 years between seasons (...you know what i mean, that was a terrible sentence)

keeper decisions i struggled with
- not keeping willson contreras - probably not going to improve on him for catcher in the draft but i'd have to lose devers or torres to keep him (since he doesn't turn 27 until may) and they both seem potentially more valuable over the long term, especially since they're both so young
- not keeping jon gray - i keep expecting him to have a breakout season and his strikeout numbers can be gaudy when he's hot but he just hasn't been consistently good on the level of clevinger so i went with him instead

no probably not -- the IRL one is usually around 1pm Eastern. but then we usually hang out for a while and possibly do dinner (we even have ppl drive in from out of town usually). iiiiiif it were possible to do the draft later that day, like 7pm instead of 4pm, awesome, but honestly, i'll have my laptop and my cheatsheets and shit, i might just take a chill 45m break from being super-social and be only semi-social while drafting. no need to move the day/time unless it doesn't work for others!

i just remembered i have a wedding to attend on 3/17 at 5PM PDT. What are the chances the draft could be moved to 11AM PDT?? just to cut it less close.

i don't want to move it up too much because of Will's draft, but if I move it up by an hour - it shouldn't affect him. our drafts are normally pretty quick because of the keepers – would you be able to be there for most of it (possibly in a tux) if i changed it to 12 PDT (3 EST)?

we also have so many keepers/so few picks in that league, i just checked the timestamps for last year's draft, and it took... 45 minutes, lol. the league is only batters and team pitching (like team defense in football, kinda?) so it's 16 rounds, and 4 keepers, so really only 12 rounds (w/ 10 teams, and some teams have too few picks, so it ends up being... 115 total?)

we use fantrax btw, and it RULES, i'd almost recommend migrating but then we'd lose league history :(

Yikes, I will be out of town that weekend but will try to cut out a chunk of time to devote to this.

I had an offensive day for the ages yesterday: 13/17, 11 R, 9 HR, 13 RBI, .481 OBP, 1.519 SLG, 10 XBH. Set the league single day record for HR, XBH, and SLG. Unfortunately all this did was make up for my offense mostly crapping the bed for the past two weeks, but still, it was a fun day.

Andujar: labrum tear (Apr 1 -> EOS). 12 games played in 2019 for my #3 pick lol
Haniger: ruptured testicle (Jun 7 -> Sept?)
Mondesi: subluxation of shoulder (Jul 16 -> Sept?). Still #2 in SBs lol!
Marquez: arm inflamation (Aug 26 -> ?)

i know that given my position it's gauche to complain about this, but javy baez and christian yelich are now both out for the rest of the season but neither are on the DL, so i can't DL them to make room for replacements, and they're both keeper-eligible so i'm not going to drop them

well, looks like the die is cast with 5 days to go. the only question is if having no pitching and being short 3 hitters will be enough to drop NA/Javy 20 points in the standings.

after reviewing the expanded standings and looking at the numbers, i'm leaning wards "no".

Happy last day everyone, I've been battling for the final podium spot for ages now. I was devastated to have had dropped to 4th recently, but somehow collected about 10 points in the last week to claim my spot for the first time! Some of those days the stats looked okay, but I'd be unexplainably +4. Funny how those numbers come together sometimes. See you at the wreath ceremony

i also enjoyed making a big, season-impacting trade! trades are fun! losing rafael devers and (to a lesser extent) franmil reyes is probably going to hurt me in future seasons but verlander (plus darvish rebounding) really helped my pitching stats improve enough to push me into that top spot.

Good job NA. Hopefully my keepers will be off the IL sometime in 2020.

so there will be changes next season and also I have a suggestion I'd like to run by everyone.

new for next year:
• 3rd DL slot. with the shortened IL, there's just too many dudes inured at any given time.
• static age cut-off date to be April 1. this is instead of basing off the official opening day, which is just creating too much work/confusion since it changes yearly.
• weighted lottery draft order. basically i use a random list generator to decide the draft order every year – next year I will weight the teams so that last place gets 13 chances at first pick, 12th place gets 12 - all the way to first place getting just one entry.

bigger change I'm contemplating and might poll managers on:
adding a 6th keeper. this will be a minor leager with no MLB experience. I would add a 2nd NA slot as well for this. this would not count as an under 27 player – the only condition to being kept is that they have never played in the majors and are (obviously) available in yahoo. since they added the top 30 prospects for every team last year, this should not be a problem.

How good is the Yahoo! platform for true dynasty leagues (such as the slot you're proposing?). I feel like I've heard feedback in the past that the depth of their dynasty rosters is not as robust as their alternatives...

well like i said, they have the top 30 prospects for every team. i have no idea what the alternatives are like – but we're only talking one minor leaguer set aside per team, there's no way yahoo won't be able to meet our needs.

Yeah that sounds pretty robust to me. I'm really angling for some of the LLWS MVPs though.
