rob, Friday, 1 February 2019 00:14 (five years ago) link

reggae is a blind spot of mine

Oor Neechy, Friday, 1 February 2019 00:17 (five years ago) link

actually that might not be 1969 anyway. reggae releases are such a mess

rob, Friday, 1 February 2019 00:21 (five years ago) link

ok lol I was way off with that (1973). What a crazy year: I would have a hard time picking my favorite Fairport Convention release

rob, Friday, 1 February 2019 00:26 (five years ago) link

voted foIn A Silent Way, it's a brimstead desert island disc

brimstead, Friday, 1 February 2019 00:34 (five years ago) link

runners up:

Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin
Nick Drake - Five Leaves Left

brimstead, Friday, 1 February 2019 00:37 (five years ago) link

led zeppelin ii is the only one of these i've ever owned on 8-track

"filles de kilimanjaro" is also a very good pick, but most of these are, that's the thing

for a long time "uncle meat" was my favorite 1969 record, and it's still one of zappa's best, but i think i'm probably past it now

The Elvis of Nationalism and Amoral Patriotism (rushomancy), Friday, 1 February 2019 01:25 (five years ago) link

I thought it was gonna be an easy vote for Captain Beefheart but then I kept reading and saw Miles, Sly, etc. Probably still Beefheart, but still.

Few more rock nuggets from '69.

Grateful Dead- Live Dead
CCR- Willy and the Poor Boys
The Who- Tommy
Jefferson Airplane- Volunteers (also put out live record "Bless It's Pointed Little Head" in 69 too).
Santana, Allman Brothers, Mott the Hoople- s/t debuts
Free's s/t from '69 was their 2nd lp and they also put out Tons of Sobs that year).
Grand Funk Railroad- Grand Funk (aka red album)

lesser known favorites of mine:
Spirit- The Family that Plays Together & Clear
Leslie West- Mountain
Spooky Tooth- Spooky Two
Humble Pie- As Safe As Yesterday Is & Town and Country

Either Beefheart or In a Silent Way, I don't know. Both are very important albums.

jmm, Friday, 1 February 2019 02:14 (five years ago) link

xp very cool list, thank you!

sleeve, Friday, 1 February 2019 06:20 (five years ago) link

geez also there’s love’s “four sail”

budo jeru, Friday, 1 February 2019 06:37 (five years ago) link

1969 is about the point where modern mic’ing and multi-tracking become widely deployed, so you’ve got a lot of records with overall ambience that hasn’t dated as much as, say, the Spector wall-of-sound ideal that was preponderant a few years before. The idea of the LP as a cohesive statement had really sunk in. And labels would take a stab at promoting just about anything, so artistic leeway was at a high tide.

eva logorrhea (bendy), Friday, 1 February 2019 13:35 (five years ago) link

The Who- Tommy

Not a favorite of mine, thought it has some incredible moments. During recording, Townshend planned on adding electric guitar overdubs to toughen up the sound, but was told by Kit Lambert that all the tracks were full. When Townshend dug up the multitracks for a remix in the '90s, he found that every reel had two or three empty tracks.

thanks, i love when i manage to shoehorn in the opportunity to recommend records i love that i can't really talk about to anybody outside the internet

i found a really nice looking copy of the "touch" s/t on deram in a local thrift store, it was $40 but honestly in the discogs age that wasn't terribly inflated given what they were charging for old journey records

i don't have a record player though so i didn't get it. nice record. unfortunately the album cover bears a striking resemblance to goatse.

the beatles are going to win this, aren't they?

Oor Neechy, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 00:01 (five years ago) link

somebody mentioned a gut vote, which is the only way to get through this onslaught of manna---so I'll go with Black Woman: Sonny and Linda Sharrock are both the most tenacious beauty and the beast, still right here, right now, and transcendent in both/all directions.

dow, Wednesday, 6 February 2019 06:27 (five years ago) link
