Gran Torino starring Clint Eastwood as the angry old man

the whole movie reminded of the truly terrible hilary swank's family stuff in million dollar baby... just such ungenerous, lazy, self-righteous writing.

the way the slutty granddaughter nosing around after the car gets her comeuppance for being a terribly-drawn character in the end is just so gross

yeah this was pretty bad. even the best parts seemed like a cliche we've seen 1000 times before. old guy tutoring boy.. liked the scene with the hairdresser though. lazy ending too. and Eastwood's acting was the low point. (i* hated the growling)

When a director with Eastwood's past makes a back-to-basics move like Gran Torino, he's reduced to first principles: vigilantism and a creeping case of the cutes.

Can't quite fathom how anyone thought this anything other than hilarious/terrible. Most people I know who saw it all expected something more serious but all just gave in to it and had to laugh.

And then the few moments of bad things really jar because you're all "that doesnt really have any place in a comedy does it?"

hell yes this movie is awesome. thread is crazy.

main problem was the devilish gang bangers who are dead set on having a kid clearly not cut out to be useful in criminal life, in their gang, up to the point of raping a family member to prove the point, somehow. the whole thing turns on this motivation and it's really stupid.

This has been my experience with ILX for years. Good flick.

I loved it. People are more likely to write about things they hate.

@Alba, I think you are right, that's why I can't ever trust customer on line reviews, the Internet brings out everyone's inner crank.

this is on tv. the scene where clint takes the azn kid to the barber to "man him up."

Still fascinated this turned into a sleeper hit. But, yeah, kinda bad.

I actually got into a big argument about this with a friend the other night. I thought the two Hmong kids were really wooden and awful, but my friend swore that was "the point", that they were awkward kids. I don't buy it, I just didn't ever feel a genuine emotion out of either of them. The song at the end of the movie was hilarious though.

But on the whole I thought the movie was just okay. Some really awkward scenes, but I thought there were a couple that worked well. Not at all worth the hype, but not as terrible as its ILX reputation might suggest.

Amateur =/= bad.

But the boy in particular was as bad as anything I've seen in a major motion picture.

The scene where he was locked in the basement, banging on the door, was particularly painful.

Junior high-level acting there.

I love this movie. Totally hilarious.

I really dug this btw. Made me think of Kurosawa.
