hated that vampire movie so much.

btw Burn This is about a love-hate sexual tango, so the promo theme is not off-base.

Paterson I didn't like at all at the time but it's stuck with me

Not excited about more vampire shit

I liked Paterson a lot but certainly don't remember any lines. I do remember Chidi from The Good Place though.

Paterson was great!

I think the lack of quotable lines in Jarmusch movies is generally a plus and not a minus. Not really a punchy script guy.

- Now, what the fuck is his name?

- Ghost Dog.

- What?

- Ghost Dog.

- Ghost Dog?

- He said Ghost Dog!

- He calls himself Ghost Dog.

- A lot of these black guys, gangster type guys, they all got names like that.

- (Mr Vargo) Is that true?

- He means like the rappers.

- The rappers got names like that - Snoop Doggy Dogg, Ice Cube, Q-Tip, Method Man. My favourite was always Flavor Flav from Public Enemy. "He got the funky fresh fly flava, from the bank of reality. I kick da flyest dope manoeuvre, technicality, to a dope track." I love that guy.

- I know nothing about that,

Dover was the only thing that kept the Terry Gilliam Don Quixote movie from being unwatchable.

I hated Only Lovers Left Alive so much it almost put me off even bothering to watch Paterson... glad it didn’t, that was such a pleasant surprise, Driver is the perfect fit for Jarmusch’s style

One Eye Open, Wednesday, 17 April 2019 22:40 (five years ago) link

I have a sizeable straight-crush on A Driver, he's one of those actors that's compelling as fuck imo and his physical presence is very much a part of that

xp he is perfect for Jarmusch

I just started the final season of Girls, the best show of the decade. Can't wait to come back here and the other thread and glow on.

I really need to see Patterson. He was great in Blackkklansman and Dead dont Die (I still cant decide wether that film was terrible, or terribly clever).

I am on board with all this objectification fwiw

Adam Driver is really appealing, I will always want to see a film he's in

really love Laura Dern, every thing she's done recently is mesmerizing: her performances in Enlightenment, Twin Peaks: The Return, and Big Little Lies are all shockingly great

Dan S, Friday, 15 November 2019 04:18 (four years ago) link

I liked The Report. not remarkable in any way, but politically sound and mostly taut. I really appreciated the Zero Dark Thirty dig. I don't think the torture scenes were necessary, suggestion would've sufficed and compression would've helped, because it those sequences did verge into ZDT territory at times. It was a little soft on Obama, but it's more explicitly critical than any other movie on this level I've seen.

flappy bird, Sunday, 17 November 2019 05:36 (four years ago) link

so it isn't politically sound!

Agree with flappy that The Report's not remarkable, but I liked it too and Adam Driver's very good and felt well cast.

Minor observation... He had a subtle stress tic below his eye in some of the higher stakes scenes that I wondered if he was managing to call up on demand and was impressed by if so. Will be disappointed if that's where any CGI/FX budget went.

brain (krakow), Sunday, 17 November 2019 14:21 (four years ago) link

So many "So what you're telling me is..." expository scenes in The Report. Adam Driver is too good an actor to play a boy scout.

Apparently he has a new movie out where he fights dinosaurs with a laser gun? Knowing nothing more about it, I can't think of another would-be blockbuster more destined for the dustbin. What was that Will Smith family players space movie? "After Earth"?
