copeland ranked:

ixora
you are my sunshine
in motion
eat sleep repeat
beneath medicine tree

it does not seem like such a daunting discography but each record is such a stylistic leap that you tend to dwell on 1-2 at a time

new martha!

current rankings for me:

— in moton (perfect alb)
— beneath medicine tree (feels a little more of its time than the others but it's all wrapped in a sweet concept which still resonates with me)
— eat sleep repeat (beginning to stretch out a little on this one, I saw them in san antonio during this tour) title track is a top 5 copeland track for me)
— you are my sunshine (was losing touch with this type of music a bit around this time, not as deeply engrained in me but it it is great)
— ixora (admittedly need to spend more time with this, and ixora twin)

not a bad or even ok album in the discography. they havent missed yet.

marcos smart (Spottie), Wednesday, 30 January 2019 19:35 (five years ago) link

in motion is def perfect

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 30 January 2019 19:35 (five years ago) link

it's really tied with sunshine in that ranking

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 30 January 2019 19:36 (five years ago) link

not sure what it is about ixora but it's a perfect union of consistent mood and aaron marsh's songwriting expanding to previously unmet horizons. "erase" is some kind of perfect song

if i had to guess blushing seems like it's gonna be the indoor record to ixora's outdoors

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 30 January 2019 19:41 (five years ago) link

i also really love esr and bmt they're all good

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 30 January 2019 19:44 (five years ago) link

lol that PUP video has so much going on, it's crazy. I admire a band that can totally eclipse their own song by overloading you with visual content!

New Martha is sounding very charming.

tangenttangent, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 20:55 (five years ago) link

a friend of a friend of mine directed it so I heard the basic synopsis in advance but it was much more elaborate than I imagined

resident hack (Simon H.), Wednesday, 30 January 2019 21:11 (five years ago) link

I think it’s a great video, just yeah, so elaborate! Will need a few rewatches to absorb the details.

Oh, not exactly the right thread, but I saw Swearin’ last night and they have such a lovely energy together and the whole gig felt very warm. They didn’t play Oil and Water though, which was regretful.

tangenttangent, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 21:57 (five years ago) link

Swearin' fits just fine here, I think

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Thursday, 31 January 2019 15:10 (five years ago) link

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 31 January 2019 15:22 (five years ago) link

there's a new Partner song but it's not up to par with their best work tbh

resident hack (Simon H.), Thursday, 31 January 2019 15:23 (five years ago) link

when i saw them live last year they seemed about to make a dramatic stylistic shift that i don't know if i wanna follow them down. gonna check out the song anyway

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 31 January 2019 15:26 (five years ago) link

Did you guys know about MIKE KROL?

tangenttangent, Monday, 4 February 2019 11:24 (five years ago) link

I just found out because of this new album: https://mikekrol.bandcamp.com/album/power-chords

Listening to his first and second albums will cost you a combined 35 minutes and I highly recommend it. The most fun power pop in the world, and that's saying something.

tangenttangent, Monday, 4 February 2019 11:44 (five years ago) link

I honestly don't know if post-hardcore belongs here or in Rolling Metal but I saw Humanities, Ultra Love, and Dark Plains on the weekend and it was a really good show. Humanities recall Fugazi but are heavier, with some good noisy moments; probably some Shotmaker in there. Dark Plains is actually comprised of former members of Shotmaker, Okara, and Metz, and get into some almost pigfuck-like territory; sometimes even some blues-rock-informed riffs and cool lead guitar bits that I sometimes wish went on longer. I was most surprised by Ultra Love, whose Arpin produced a really satisfying wash of noise and dissonance, with tuneful bits, on a Les Paul in something of a post-metal/gaze dirge context.

that Pitchfork feature today must have done its work cause I'm actually digging the hell out of the Wicca Phase Springs Eternal album

Simon H., Friday, 15 March 2019 01:49 (five years ago) link

though the "rap" element is overstated, really it has more in common with the earlier Coma Cinema/Elvis Depressedly stuff imo

Simon H., Friday, 15 March 2019 01:50 (five years ago) link

Yeah I’m not 100% sure what emo rap is supposed to be after listening to it but agree that it’s pretty great.

alrakis morissette (tangenttangent), Friday, 15 March 2019 06:02 (five years ago) link

It's not very rappy. It's ok. A little slight to me.

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Saturday, 23 March 2019 13:35 (five years ago) link

Yeah, it's really good. I own Wildlife and it's solid, but this is clearly several leagues better.

Simon H., Saturday, 23 March 2019 13:48 (five years ago) link

I find the guy's vocal approach really interesting too, that mix of rhythmic recitation, singing, and several steps in between.

I'm a little late on this one, but if you love The Maine or fellow southwesterners Anarbor (their tracks "Freaking Out!" and "Every High Has a Come Down" especially), check out "Twilight (My Heaven) from Philly band Grayscale. This rowdy, driving tune is loaded with those little elements that you'll find in most great songs, like a glorious pre-chorus, a bass-drum fill (!) midway through the chorus amidst the huge harmonies, and a few moments of silence amidst it all; and it just sounds fantastic blasting on your car stereo with the windows down. ("Baby Blue", another standout track of theirs from '19 album Nella Vita, is in the spirit of The 1975's "She's American")
