phomplaberst is not my thing

why date Ryan Adams in the first place? (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 24 January 2019 19:32 (five years ago) link

it's a pretty fun record so far! only the opening track has really struck that quintessential phoebe bridgers note of emotional desolation though

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 24 January 2019 20:42 (five years ago) link

three weeks pass...

“Service Road” on the Better Oblivion record, the one about Oberst’s brother’s death, is haunting and amazing. Bridgers’ backup vocals are great.

Trϵϵship, Sunday, 17 February 2019 17:00 (five years ago) link

was planning on ignoring this cause i've been out on oberst for a while and bridgers' 2017 album didn't stick with me, but wow is "dylan thomas" a good song.

this is my favorite oberst related project for a while

Trϵϵship, Monday, 18 February 2019 22:09 (five years ago) link

Whole album's a treat tbh

"Dylan Thomas" and "Service Road" I hope show up in next year's track list.

So is the title Stranger In The Alps a reference to The Big Lebowski?

it has to be, right?

we're far from the challops now (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 19 February 2019 04:49 (five years ago) link

One would assume so, yes

Only a Factory URL (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 19 February 2019 10:47 (five years ago) link

Yeah, it has to be.

About 6 months ago, Mark Wheat, a DJ on our local public indie station (89.3 - "The Current") played Phoebe's "Stranger in the Alps" track "Motion Sickness" immediately before Kenny Rogers & The First Edition's "Just Dropped In", then simply followed it with another song, adding no context or reference. It was one of those rad "I see what you did there!" moments that remind me of just why I care so much about this whole music whathaveyou. The station seems to love rewarding fellow music nerds, as another Current DJ, Mary Lucia, plays Hüsker Dü tracks primarily from the era of their (actual or kayfabe-laden?) rivalry with the Replacements (Paul Westerberg happens to be her brother).

"big lebowski" references

you know who deserves sitewide mod privileges? (m bison), Thursday, 21 February 2019 01:06 (five years ago) link

sorry/thx, i knew Stranger in the Alps but not Just Dropped In. (seen Lebowski once long ago and hated it.)

alpine static, Thursday, 21 February 2019 03:35 (five years ago) link

i think motion sickness might be a "great" song, not just a good one. i was a bit disappointed to learn it was about ryan adams--i didn't want the narrative to be so specific--but even with that, it doesn't lose any of its impact.

Trϵϵship, Thursday, 21 February 2019 03:50 (five years ago) link

it's better than great. it's brilliant, a bona fide classic, an all-timer...

alpine static, Thursday, 21 February 2019 06:38 (five years ago) link

"Dylan Thomas" and "Service Road" I hope show up in next year's track list.

otm, just hit replay on "Dylan Thomas." I like this album.

I'm coming around on some songs. It still really annoys me when Conor's voice comes in on the first track. The lyric is one person's story, and it doesn't really make sense for this other voice to come in with octave unison. Phoebe's double tracked voice and the guitars would have been stronger for the song. I like Conor's voice as a lead, but it's not really capable of serving another role.

really

say it with sausages (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 21 February 2019 23:34 (five years ago) link

feel like I made a deal w/ satan to make my copy of Raising Sand much cooler, but he took all of the harmonies away as payment.

say it with sausages (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 21 February 2019 23:39 (five years ago) link

'Service Road' sure is good, though

say it with sausages (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 21 February 2019 23:43 (five years ago) link

no i agree there's too much oberst on this album

I checked out her solo LP after all the hubbub. It totally lives up to the hype. Fabulous atmosphere, impressive depth, looking forward to her next one. The Boygenius EP is great as well. The album with Conor Oberst, not so much.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 18 April 2019 01:21 (five years ago) link

I'm just not as enthused by the collaborative stuff as I am by her solo album. Have a side-projectiness to them that I find off putting.

damn this is excellent. at the very least keeps up her streak of one very great song per album.

hey, this is a good sign that the new album could be the one with multiple very great songs.

so good. who's doing the deep background harmonies?

from here: https://www.stereogum.com/2074637/phoebe-bridgers-garden-song/video

I was just thinking about my hometown, and I was thinking about reoccurring nightmares I have on tour. So on “Garden Song,” my tour manager sings with me. He’s 6-foot-7. He’s a Dutch man named Jeroen. I realized he had the voice of an angel when he was singing Mitski with me in the van and he was two octaves below me, and I was like, “You sound like a Dutch Matt Berninger from the National.”

yah i love every song on Stranger at this point.

Thybulle on the Dash (Spottie), Thursday, 27 February 2020 06:35 (four years ago) link

This sounds better with each listen. I’m sleep deprived and on a train at the moment so that sound of looping backwards guitars (?) is blending with everything around me and it’s beautiful.

Excellent new song, love the spooky double-tracked vocal vibe she's working with. No info on the sophomore lp?
