ah fuck i forgot that

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 23 January 2019 20:55 (five years ago) link

Ali's character mentions in the latest episode that some folks started to believe D&D was corrupting kids, but he says it in an offhand manner that suggests he or the other cops didn't really buy that.

But yeah, based on what Dorff says when being interviewed in this week's episode, seems like Ali and the DA guy had some falling off that lead to him being demoted. So maybe the DA believed in the Satanic theory while he didn't?

Tuomas, Wednesday, 23 January 2019 21:55 (five years ago) link

The implication is that the DA is already (in the 1980s timeline) wrecking parts of the investigation and all indications are that he's going to force them down a road. Probably one that forces them to a particular non-suspect and forces a quick resolution, meaning they won't have the resources to investigate leads like the brown car.

mh, Wednesday, 23 January 2019 22:07 (five years ago) link

I don’t buy the satanic angle. Sabbath t shirts and D&D stuff was pretty common during that time

calstars, Wednesday, 23 January 2019 23:47 (five years ago) link

so was satanic panic linked to it tho! especially by moral right wing crusaders.

Fizzles, Thursday, 24 January 2019 06:48 (five years ago) link

Yes, that was a huge contributing factor in the West Memphis Three case.

ShariVari, Thursday, 24 January 2019 07:43 (five years ago) link

Partial challop drop (No thread derail please) : those docs on wm3 are very tendentious and lots of what is presented as fact in them is false.

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 24 January 2019 08:31 (five years ago) link

noted, jim.

Fizzles, Thursday, 24 January 2019 09:14 (five years ago) link

Otoh prejudice and satanic panic was what lead echolls to be questioned in the first place so it would be disingenuous to say satanic panic played no role in the case

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 24 January 2019 09:25 (five years ago) link

really doubt they'd be so dumb as to misfire in this way but I had a fleeting moment of worry thinking "oh no, what if Pizzolatto thought it'd be edgy to do a satanic panic plot... but it's all true"

mh, Thursday, 24 January 2019 15:06 (five years ago) link

well either he's bluffing or...

People have noted the comparison to the West Memphis 3 “Satanic panic” case, how of much of that is an inspiration if any?

Not at all. You’re moved off that pretty quickly. It’s really not informed by that.

Number None, Thursday, 24 January 2019 15:12 (five years ago) link

good

calumy (rip van wanko), Thursday, 24 January 2019 16:00 (five years ago) link

the dialogue in this show is very bad.

the first date scene in the latest episode was a case in point.

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Monday, 28 January 2019 20:30 (five years ago) link

yeah lots of cringeworthy dialog in that episode unfortunately

Heez, Monday, 28 January 2019 20:54 (five years ago) link

- so you're a catholic, eh
- yeah. you?
- baptist
- I knew a baptist guy in vietnam
- oh yeah, what happened to him?
**stares out window and quietly makes a gun shot sound**

Heez, Monday, 28 January 2019 20:57 (five years ago) link

hahaha

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Monday, 28 January 2019 21:03 (five years ago) link

imagine a guy from arkansas saying "knew a baptist guy in vietnam" in the first place. like you knew plenty of baptist folks in general you're form arkansas ffs

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Monday, 28 January 2019 21:04 (five years ago) link

I bought it as a thing he says to all baptists

why date Ryan Adams in the first place? (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 28 January 2019 21:14 (five years ago) link

or maybe even more generally, say at the grocery store:

- twinkies, eh?
- yeah.
- more of ho ho man myself
- I knew a ho ho guy in vietnam
- oh yeah, what happened to him?
**stares at magazine rack and quietly makes a gun shot sound**

or returning from duty in vietnam:

- survived vietnam, eh?
- yeah.
- more of a get-shot-in-vietnam man myself
- I knew a get-shot-in-vietnam guy in vietnam
- oh yeah, what happened to him?
**stares at 'more of ho ho man myself' in ilx post**

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Monday, 28 January 2019 22:37 (five years ago) link

This is the episode that Milch worked on iirc...

Number None, Monday, 28 January 2019 22:40 (five years ago) link

lol.

like that part made me chuckle. plus the weird beat after where you are waiting for a cut or for the next scene and it doesn't come. i also thought the date scene at the nice restaurant was tremendous! so many evasions and doubled meanings.

tbf i also liked the dialogue in season 2...but only Farrell was really up to it. the bizarre and often pulpy flourishes in the writing are what keep this show a head above stately prestige tv fair, imo.

ryan, Monday, 28 January 2019 22:42 (five years ago) link

xp

the bit in the restaurant were he goes "i don't like that word unless it's applied to a man" about the word pussy and she goes "what do you prefer?" or whatevs and he says "cockholster" and they both find it hilarious made me groan

he said "dickholster," which isn't as good (which is why you fixed it for him lol)

Larry Elleison (rogermexico.), Tuesday, 29 January 2019 00:56 (five years ago) link

i really like the actors that play the kids parents. she's great in the 'i have the soul of a whore' scene

Heez, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 03:43 (five years ago) link

David Milch cowrote this episode and the unrealisitic dialogue showed it (particularly in the argument Hays had with his wife and 'soul of a whore')

akm, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 14:40 (five years ago) link

That bit where the TV producer/interviewer says “I’m not going to show you all my cards yet” was like oh hello contrived detective show.

DJI, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 16:07 (five years ago) link

I keep thinking of Sarah Gadon's presence in Cronenberg films and expect the interviews to go in a weird direction

mh, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 16:15 (five years ago) link

It's pretty facile to point to Milch as the primary reason for "unrealistic" dialogue. Pizzolatto is more than capable of that on his own

Number None, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 17:36 (five years ago) link

I can definitely see them bringing out the worst in each other though

Number None, Tuesday, 29 January 2019 17:38 (five years ago) link

i liked her line about 'you only stand upright out of habit' though.

akm, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 06:54 (five years ago) link

yeah that was a thump to the chest

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 18:52 (five years ago) link

thought last night's ep was much better.

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Monday, 4 February 2019 17:03 (five years ago) link

they're definitely having fun with the multiple era linkage

the scene where the older, senile Hays is looking for his family only to see a flashback to the '90s, and the flashback Hays is remembering his blood-covered self from a decade earlier in the window reflection was a interesting visual linkage

mh, Monday, 4 February 2019 17:27 (five years ago) link

kind of felt like most of this episode was treading water though it did have two major things in it (the phone call from Julie and the reunion of the two detectives); but it took a long time to get there. guess it's the mid-point in the series though.

intrigued by Julie's "the man pretending to be my dad" comment.

also clearly by the 'present' time it appears that she has never resurfaced.

akm, Monday, 4 February 2019 18:04 (five years ago) link

they may play it a different way, but given her phone call and the drifter kid's description of things she'd said, I get the impression that she was abducted and also brainwashed by whoever took her into thinking her dad was a horrible abuser

the cops seemed as if they were suspicious he might be culpable, though

mh, Monday, 4 February 2019 18:11 (five years ago) link

i liked that episode! so bill clinton did all of this, right
