Must be an interesting editorial process they have over there

Weirder and worse to have published it in the first place probably

Have p much stopped any regular listening, should probably cancel the patreon at this point. Virgil is too earnest and wonky and makes it feel only a hair away from being just any old political podcast, and the other guys’ schtick feels a bit spent. Also hearing them act dumbfounded by Trump is not rendered more interesting by peppering it with Adam Curtis terms.

Wait, waht, why would the Baffler feel the need to retract what was a pretty boilerplate left wing op-ed?

in the tank for #kucinich2020 iirc

I've been enjoying it more as a lefty news digest than anything else, though I've realized I listen for Matt's takes far more than anyone else's. He ended up completely otm on the cov cath shithead with the "shaming era is over" bit

resident hack (Simon H.), Wednesday, 23 January 2019 11:24 (five years ago) link

The Baffler, which focuses on left-wing politics and culture, is owned by The Baffler Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, it is legally prohibited from endorsing any candidate for public office.

this looks promising

Sean KB recorded an ep with fellow history nerd, Matt Christman of The Chapo Trap House, who is similarly tyrannized by the weight of dead generations.

The question: Why, of all advanced capitalist countries, is the United States unique in its historical failure to form a bone-fide Labour/Socialist party organically tied to the union movement as an institutionalized political expression of working class interests? The answers may surprise you.

Young socialist planning a run for congress is currently doing an AMA over on the CTH subreddit. Sounds like he has a tough race ahead.

Honest question: What's the point of a minimum wage if you also have a federal job guarantee that pays more than minimum wage? Why would anyone work minimum wage, then? Also, wtf at calling Venezuela for Iraq 2.0?

Frederik B, Friday, 1 February 2019 14:20 (five years ago) link

The last one might be less honest. But wouldn't Venezuela at least be Iraq 4.0 or something? I thought Hillary had created a couple more Iraqs just on her own.

Frederik B, Friday, 1 February 2019 14:23 (five years ago) link

He seems pretty upfront about his individual policy goals still being formed to some degree

resident hack (Simon H.), Friday, 1 February 2019 14:28 (five years ago) link

His edibles strategy seems pretty sensible.

twitch isn't really my thing but the ChapoFYM crew are doing a 24-hour charity stream in support of RAICES

this show has become so much less funny since the new year and feature far too much matt christman shouting in lieu of actual humour.

depends on what the fed job is

flopson, Saturday, 2 February 2019 08:31 (five years ago) link

So the idea is to use money to create jobs so shitty that people don't really want them?

Frederik B, Saturday, 2 February 2019 10:08 (five years ago) link

This is the kind of policies I would come up with and I mean this in the least flattering way possible. That's not even the problem here. Doing an AMA only on the chapo trap house reddit is some sort of feed the echo chamber self-congratulation a lot of the left needs to stop doing.

Van Horn Street, Saturday, 2 February 2019 19:39 (five years ago) link

as a lefty fringe candidate, getting your fundraising appeal pinned to a subreddit with like 77k leftists on it seems pretty ideal to me

bhad bundy (Simon H.), Saturday, 2 February 2019 19:54 (five years ago) link

From what I understand, recent leftist politics have been more successful the moment it engaged with something more than fringe groups.

Van Horn Street, Saturday, 2 February 2019 20:08 (five years ago) link

But whatever i means this is how Chapo Trap House makes their dough so yeah.

preferences and aptitudes for jobs are pretty diverse, so id expect some people to prefer a mw job to the JG job. some will likely prefer unemployment, too

flopson, Saturday, 2 February 2019 20:43 (five years ago) link

16 months out from the primary, what should this candidate with no money and no visibility be doing instead?

louise ck (milo z), Saturday, 2 February 2019 20:48 (five years ago) link

Isn't it more a question of doing something different for, like, years and years, so you don't try and run by chatting on reddit?

Frederik B, Saturday, 2 February 2019 22:40 (five years ago) link

It's so weird to me that there are apparently no socialist youth groups in the US you could go and be a part of so you don't have to start figuring stuff out on your own as your running.

Frederik B, Saturday, 2 February 2019 22:41 (five years ago) link

do you know the history of socialism in the USA and how loaded that word is here

I was unaware of the long history of leftism defeating itself by "running by chatting on reddit" which has existed since like 2008.

Wait, what does the 'S' in DSA stand for?

Frederik B, Saturday, 2 February 2019 23:10 (five years ago) link

lmfao there like 5 ppl in the DSA before Trump

flappy bird, Saturday, 2 February 2019 23:14 (five years ago) link

I signed up for the Young People’s Socialist League in high school in the ‘90s (SPUSA youth org). There were five members in Texas.

Have been skipping a lot lately but enjoyed the ep on Studio 60. Further reinforces my sense that the original lineup is way better than when they mix in Virgil or Amber.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Sunday, 3 February 2019 03:58 (five years ago) link

Opposite, I missed Amber compared to the other Sorkin/movie eps. (Didn't miss Virgil)

louise ck (milo z), Sunday, 3 February 2019 04:06 (five years ago) link

I have nothing against Virgil per se it's just that (1) his earnest wonkiness steers the show more in a typical politipodcast direction and (2) his frustrated nerd schtick is sort of redundant to Matt, only weaker, like adding a slice of american cheese to one that already has sharp cheddar on it

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Sunday, 3 February 2019 04:10 (five years ago) link

I agree with that. IMO the frustrated Matt rants are a feature not a bug, esp since he's demonstrated a better grasp of left political history than the rest of them combined

bhad bundy (Simon H.), Sunday, 3 February 2019 05:52 (five years ago) link

Yes when Matt gets on a good roll, that's the show in peak form imo

flappy bird, Sunday, 3 February 2019 05:58 (five years ago) link

If anything he's the only thing keeping then from being Pod Save DSA

I’m very entertained by Felix’s recent Knausgaard obsession, or at least by how much it annoys everyone else.

That "bookiest book" bit was admittedly hilarious

bhad bundy (Simon H.), Sunday, 3 February 2019 06:22 (five years ago) link

I enjoy his knausgaard bit,I didn't realise he was still doing it,any particular episode?

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Sunday, 3 February 2019 17:35 (five years ago) link

Felix is obviously the most consistently funny one, but most of the absolute sharpest/smartest jokes are Virgil. Felix has the best batting average but Virgil’s hitting the grand slams.

Matt Christman is the least funny member of a comedy podcast.
