why, in 2019, are there comments sections on _anything_?

a couple of months ago I was bored at work and went down a rabbit hole of reading comments on classic Nancy cartoons. there is definitely a community of weirdos who are deeply involved in yuks practice. this was my favorite:

I'll just say that it's a deeply researched biography of Nancy cartoonist Ernie Bushmiller--and the cartooning worlds he lived among in New York from the late 1910s to the 1970s--helped along considerably by interviews with Ernie's still-living friend Jim Carlsson and the generosity of Mark Newgarden in giving me access to interviews and research he and Paul Karasick did for How to Read Nancy. I'll just add a line of mine from an introduction I wrote for a Nancy anthology: "Peanuts tells you what it's like to be a child. Nancy tells you what it's like to be a comic strip."

Not counting that one though, I feel New Nancy has just fallen into a pattern of winky 4th-wall-breaking meta-commentary which is really cute SOMETIMES but I wish there was a little more there

the way I judge newspaper comics is if there's one good one in a week then that's a pretty good week

I like it! When it’s not being meta or channelling Bushmiller, I get a strong Peanuts vibe. It’s like Peanuts with Lucy as the hero instead of CB.

That popularity is fueling other “Nancy” projects. Two books are due out in the fall, a board game is in the works, and the syndicate says it is finalizing a deal with a major streaming service for animated entertainment.

what's fueling other projects is the fact that United Features owns the IP and is going to wring every penny out of it they can.

last week's strips were all pretty damn funny

i get where the schulz comparisons are coming from, a lot of the non-meta nancy is dealing with the ridiculous things we do, and it's expressed through children on top of that

like schulz nancy's behavior is genuinely childlike most of the time, but her selfishness, laziness, and petty narcissism is something that's easy to relate to as an adult

it's actually kind of interesting how relatable a character nancy is for being a narcissist
