My hunch is that the Buzzfeed story is substantially correct in outline, but not in all details, with more elements of ambiguity than the news story described. The precise wording of the release is what I'd call a non-denial denial.

I can’t speak to Buzzfeed’s sourcing, but, for what it’s worth, I declined to run with parts of the narrative they conveyed based on a source central to the story repeatedly disputing the idea that Trump directly issued orders of that kind.

To be clear: Mueller is not disputing that Cohen says Trump told him to lie. He’s disputing the line about corroborating evidence taken from Trump Org emails, texts, etc. Still a huge deal. But not a total refutation. In fact, Cohen’s 11/30 memo says Trump directed him to lie.

Anyway it’s annoying mueller is throwing ice water on the buzzfeed story. And it’s annoying trump is touting it as a victory. It’s not like he was forthright about trump tower moscow—he lied to voters about it. he is bragging that there might not be ironclad evidence of him ordering cohen to lie to congress about it.

Mueller seems like the type who wants the narrative, when it emerges, to be airtight, by-the-book, and beyond caviling. Of course, once it is released into the wild, the narrative will quickly flow downhill toward a more easily assimilated simplification, and each side will compete to direct it to the most convenient resting place for their purposes.

fuck temporary protection, but more importantly, fuck ANYTHING AT ALL in exchange for the wall. if you criticize the offer because it's temporary, that leads to possible concessions that it would be better if it were permanent, which would be a compromise that trump could try to negotiate toward. then he could claim victory on two counts - getting his dumbass border wall, and getting democrats to concede to a deal that was offered a year ago. it would also reinforce the idea that establish budgets and policy via hostage showdowns is a good thing to try. that's why they have to just stand strong on the NOTHING for the wall, open the government now you childish loser strategy
