i'm just now post-prison break

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 17 January 2019 23:35 (five years ago) link

its’s like throwing a bunch of web bombs around you at once

the electrify gloves one is necessary in the “zap ten at once” challenges

mh, Friday, 18 January 2019 05:14 (five years ago) link

I have officially played 1% of this! It's a blast, but I feel like I already need to start over and learn the controls. I'm so bad at remembering these things, and it all goes by so fast.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 24 January 2019 21:08 (five years ago) link

i felt the same way but eventually things start clicking into place

why are these games always so goddamn long though?? i mean it's good but sheesh

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 24 January 2019 21:34 (five years ago) link

I thought the main plot was pretty concise! You really should do some side stuff before getting there, though

we’re in a much difference place now compared to the jrpg days when my roommate was playing dragon quest and was like “i’m only 80 hours in!!”

mh, Friday, 25 January 2019 01:52 (five years ago) link

by modern open world standards Spidey's pretty brisk, I think I completed it in like 25 hrs or so

Nhex, Friday, 25 January 2019 06:01 (five years ago) link

I mean the other answer, I assume, is that games have a pretty hefty lead up time in production, just to get to the point where you can start making content - so if the game was half as long it would still cost 80% as much. And a lot of loud video games fans have opinions on value for money.

two weeks pass...

ya down with dlc?

love this game, not sure I'm willing to pay £6.49 for another "chapter"

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 9 February 2019 00:10 (five years ago) link

waiting for a discount on the pass myself

Nhex, Saturday, 9 February 2019 19:36 (five years ago) link

me too.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 9 February 2019 20:05 (five years ago) link

just beat the game, very much enjoyed it, but deleted it about 20 mins later to make room. too much to play, sorry dlc!

nine months pass...

Bought this Sunday, actually got dizzy swinging to the first mission, and was overwhelmed with all the button prompts during the combat. #lolold

Antonym Scalia (Leee), Monday, 25 November 2019 18:58 (four years ago) link

My biggest problem has been letting enough time go between plays (which haven't been that many, tbh, for no good reason, it's a great game) that I forget what everything does and which buttons do what. I have found that the game is pretty forgiving when it comes to frenetic and ungraceful button mashing, though.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 25 November 2019 19:10 (four years ago) link

The combat is finally clicking for me! Having loads of fun now, though catching pigeon is annoying.

Scorsese runs afoul of the Irishman (Leee), Saturday, 7 December 2019 18:42 (four years ago) link

the combat is so goddamned good. i’d end up LOOKING for tough bases to take down.

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 7 December 2019 21:38 (four years ago) link

I bought a physical copy of this and like two weeks later the optical drive on my PS4 crapped out :(

Thought this was a lot of fun. Really the best you could hope for in a game where you are the Spider-Man.

circa1916, Sunday, 8 December 2019 02:41 (four years ago) link

Heh, I had a physical copy that I just sold last week and replaced with a digital copy, figuring I'd be more likely to play it if I didn't have to fuss with a disc (and because it seems like the sort of game that works well in shorts bursts)

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 8 December 2019 03:25 (four years ago) link

I've been laughably bad at the sneaking missions, I've yet to avoid kicking boxes so far, I know the bad guys don't notice it when I do but it's still hilariously jarring.

yea it's very weird and feels kinda unnecessary when they could've simply upscaled the old model but *shrug*

Nhex, Thursday, 1 October 2020 21:25 (three years ago) link

I don't get the logic of "we wanted him to look like This Guy so we
modelled him on This Other Guy!"

Or am I misreading?

here we go, ten in a rona (onimo), Thursday, 1 October 2020 23:05 (three years ago) link

one month passes...

Played the first hour or so of Miles Morales. As expected, it's great. What I didn't expect is that they've definitely optimized the engine since the DLC came out, it runs smoother! Also cracked up when I saw the Spider-verse "filter" in action.

Nhex, Friday, 13 November 2020 04:08 (three years ago) link

omg can’t wait for that. as soon as i got the 2-d vintage stan lee comics suit in the first game i wore it all the time.

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Friday, 13 November 2020 11:14 (three years ago) link

when you play as Stan Lee does it erase the credit scroll of all the writers and designers and animators if you finish the game, and just show you dancing around saying "I made this!," with occasional cutscenes of you going to court to testify against all the programmers you fired?

@oneposter (⛰️) (sic), Friday, 13 November 2020 12:01 (three years ago) link

yes

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Friday, 13 November 2020 12:17 (three years ago) link

How different a game is it to the last Spidey?

Is it more of the sake but shinier? (because I'm in)

Or does it feel like a whole new game? (because I'm in)

ALAB (onimo), Friday, 13 November 2020 13:39 (three years ago) link

definitely more of the same, which is totally fine in this case. This is basically Spider-Man 1.5
Miles does have new powers Peter didn't have, and there's some subtle nice QOL changes but I can't quite remember offhand
also new Peter face still really weird

Nhex, Friday, 13 November 2020 13:46 (three years ago) link

thank you

I'm in!

ALAB (onimo), Friday, 13 November 2020 13:52 (three years ago) link

I recently played through the 'city that never sleeps' DLC stories for the last game as it was v cheap in a sale. I really got into the game again as the cannon fodder had better cannons and all the difficulty felt tweaked up just enough to make it more interesting but not too much to put an old gamer off

fuck an 'MJ sneaking around' mission forever btw

ALAB (onimo), Friday, 13 November 2020 13:57 (three years ago) link

lol. very “dragonlance” those scenes.

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Friday, 13 November 2020 14:14 (three years ago) link

the MJ stuff was the most gaming broccoli of gender equality ever
if you really want to even the field a bit just give us an option where I can play as Spectacular Spider Jane and my intrepid reporter boyfriend Peter is in all the cutscenes.

Four Seasons Total Manscaping (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 14 November 2020 04:46 (three years ago) link

Idk if I'll ever be able to shake the term gaming broccoli from my mind now

Kompakt Total Landscaping (Will M.), Saturday, 14 November 2020 04:51 (three years ago) link

sorry?

Four Seasons Total Manscaping (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 14 November 2020 04:54 (three years ago) link

No it's very good

Kompakt Total Landscaping (Will M.), Saturday, 14 November 2020 04:55 (three years ago) link

i think we could make a pretty solid list of gaming broccoli.
Final Fantasy character customization screens come to mind immediately.
maybe worth a thread?

Four Seasons Total Manscaping (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 14 November 2020 04:56 (three years ago) link

I'm 100% in on that thread once I process it fully and have examples. It's def a vibe I know well

Kompakt Total Landscaping (Will M.), Saturday, 14 November 2020 05:01 (three years ago) link

any and all escort missions

ciderpress, Saturday, 14 November 2020 05:05 (three years ago) link

i'm defining it in my head as "necessary and unavoidable play activity included by designers for [fullness of experience / game balance / inclusivity / customization / anticipation for the next climax / lore building] that is, nevertheless, not fun"

Four Seasons Total Manscaping (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 14 November 2020 05:07 (three years ago) link

i'm not sure you can avoid adding some broccoli in almost any game
like you wouldn't think Mortal Kombat has any but then you remember

Four Seasons Total Manscaping (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 14 November 2020 05:10 (three years ago) link

gaming broccoli is a great term. especially as a category it generates some interesting onward thinking (is the way kojima serves his broccoli the main part of what makes his games distinctive? because *so much broccoli* you could even argue he made a virtue of it in death stranding).

but yeah, how do we get the action/character from a-b, i suppose we’d better make this mission an escort mission, let’s send the character here before they can encounter x boss or get y upgrade, or *time for a laborious info dump to explain stoopid premise of the next mission. all classics of their genre.

Fizzles, Saturday, 14 November 2020 08:44 (three years ago) link

I'm not sure that I'd find the term that useful (sorry forks) - I mean FFVII arguably is a materia management sim with some very large mini games - is the story broccoli?

And most stealth sections levered in are less "we should do this" and more "we have to expand this sequel, what are the kids into".

So I'd see (keeping on that kind of example) the Spyro sequels where the charging around and head butting / flaming things is interspersed with dull levels where you have to play other characters - I'd see a line separating that from the Starcraft missions where there's no new resources, you have a small team in an enemy base and you'll get reinforcements at specific points. The latter seems a lot more like "what does our toolkit allow us to do?"

Andrew Farrell, Saturday, 14 November 2020 10:12 (three years ago) link

But maybe I'm wrong, maybe Insomniac had a burning desire for more Sheila the Kangaroo, and Blizzard had to be forced at gunpoint to make soloish levels so that the players had heroes to 'identify with'.

I've probably mentioned before but I was overjoyed to get to the bottom of the high-up dungeon on the home island in Wind Waker, because the game gave me the thing I went in there for, and a portal out, AND an entrance to more levels!

Which yeah, you like a game if you like the gameplay, but the concept of gameplay isn't a monolith. After I finished Ico, I hipped a friend to it, and she came round to play it. She really loved it - apart from the bits where you whacked at the shadow kids with your sword, where she'd hand the controller back to me. But the fighting parts are still part of the game, and contribute to the tone (and mounting horror), right?

I'm hesitant to push this theory too far, as the end point may be the claim that watching a progress bar fill is protected gameplay, which is basically the Anti-Life Equation.

Andrew Farrell, Saturday, 14 November 2020 10:29 (three years ago) link

i dont think story/cutscenes are ever broccoli unless they're interrupting a good gameplay sequence and breaking up your flow

ciderpress, Saturday, 14 November 2020 15:00 (three years ago) link

Spidey But Better is like Spidey, but better!

I really like the new supercharge not-stolen-from-infamous power but not had much fun with my invisibility cloak yet.

Early days yet so I have lots to work out with gadgets and upgrades and skill trees.
