There’s actually a SuperDry store in a mall around here but I’ve generally thought of it more as a eurotrash brand and I usually assume people wearing it are tourists or recent immigrants.

well British people are European despite protestations to the contrary

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 16 January 2019 00:34 (five years ago) link

speaking of Britisher apparel, my local Nordstrom has a Topman boutique and I just don't get it that line. Everything seems overstyled, like defiantly anti-classic, and that is fine, it's just that the directions it tends toward seem so "off", and tacky or obnoxious. Really not unlike Chess King (for other yanks) back in the day.

I totally thought superdry was japanese this entire time.

ya cheap clothes thatre basics are where its at imo like a plain navy tee shirt and whatnot ammy appy uniqlo etc

lag∞n, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 01:02 (five years ago) link

if you want some wool trousers, chinos etc that fit slim topman is not bad. it is sort of a british dandy basic bitch version of hot topic for people who probably wish they were big enough twats to buy everything from tom baker instead. THAT SAID i have bought things from topman and i daresay i'll do it again

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 16 January 2019 01:09 (five years ago) link

lol tom baker i mean ted baker :)

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 16 January 2019 01:09 (five years ago) link

Yeah I always see topman at Nordstrom/ on their website as well and I find it really unappealing. FWIW Ted Baker also seems to make shirts that look assholish in a subtle way.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Wednesday, 16 January 2019 01:34 (five years ago) link

I feel like topman is totally hit or miss depending on the year/who is working as designers. Most of those larger brands have a good two years and then everything is shit for three. Repeat.

Yerac, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 01:43 (five years ago) link

Has anyone bought from the amazon line, Goodthreads?

Yerac, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 01:48 (five years ago) link

a woman I went to high school with designs men's clothes for Lululemon, and I positively lust over their men's stuff. can't afford it though.

lag∞n, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 01:51 (five years ago) link

in my fantasy she sends me a crate of seconds, last season, overstock. I could die happy with my closet of lulu

British dandy basic bitch version of hot topic is my middle name

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 16 January 2019 02:04 (five years ago) link

Yeah, lululemon men's is pretty nice. My spouse was really anti the brand but we had a sublet across from one for 6 months (that store had really good sales) and he loves the stuff now. It's really good for tall people.

Yerac, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 02:04 (five years ago) link

what stuff does he like? the workout-y stuff or like the casualwear stuff?

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 02:05 (five years ago) link

He has some of both, basically he would get whatever was on sale that had his size. He likes it because the sleeves and torso are always long enough while being slim fit.

Yerac, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 02:07 (five years ago) link

I guess it's more the casualwear stuff because I know he goes to work in some of it.

Yerac, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 02:08 (five years ago) link

that is casual formal is wearing a clean pair of jeans

lag∞n, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 02:12 (five years ago) link

Topman is Britpop cosplay

plax (ico), Wednesday, 16 January 2019 08:37 (five years ago) link

I don't think I've ever bought anything full-price from Topman despite it being ubiquitous on the high street, their jeans and denim is absolutely stinking

Superdry stuff is so unappealing to me in so many ways too, it seems like a brand for people who want to wear a brand without any of the reasons why you would support a brand

boxedjoy, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 09:55 (five years ago) link

I hate anything with the label of the brand displayed so things like superdry and supreme always seem gauche.

Yerac, Wednesday, 16 January 2019 13:48 (five years ago) link

agreed

GarugBand (rip van wanko), Wednesday, 16 January 2019 14:21 (five years ago) link

every item of clothing in Topman is now either "super skinny" or "muscle fit"

is there a reason bunch of brands decided to call things with fleece "sherpa"?

https://www.jcrew.com/p/mens_category/outerwear/lightweight/sherpa-zipfront-hooded-jacket/K4296?color_name=darkest-navy

The Sherpa Jacket: A classic with an updated look + feel, made with high-pile fleece and soft Supima cotton. Also available as a half-zip pullover.

— Hill City (@hillcity) November 30, 2018

feel like i didn't used to see this, but maybe it's a longstanding practice somewhere.

circles, Saturday, 19 January 2019 21:03 (five years ago) link

fleece made w polyester is sherpa

the late great, Saturday, 19 January 2019 21:08 (five years ago) link

doesn't really look that updated to me, except maybe the neck and hood, but that's okay, fleece never went out in my world.

the high pile does look better than the smoother fleece tho

next time I'm climbing Mt Everest I will tell my guide that we have a word for him in the west, the same word for what cheap jackets are made of

calumy (rip van wanko), Saturday, 19 January 2019 21:13 (five years ago) link

my understanding is that sherpa fleece is a specific process variation on polar fleece invented in 1988

my understanding is that unlike polar fleece, which was invented in 77, and never patented, and like synchilla, which was patented by patagonia in 79, sherpa is patented

i think lands end holds the patent but i’m not sure

the late great, Saturday, 19 January 2019 21:15 (five years ago) link

it isn’t a trademark though, so i think you can call anything sherpa, cf nigel cabourn’s decidely non-fleece sherpa jacket (made of harris tweed, which is trademarked)

the late great, Saturday, 19 January 2019 21:18 (five years ago) link

yeah, i mean polyester fleece has been a thing for a long time, i just don't remember everyone being so eager to call it sherpa. but i guess it might make sense if it's a specific process or whatever.

circles, Saturday, 19 January 2019 21:19 (five years ago) link

yeah i don’t know, the more i research the less it seems that there’s any consistency in the use

todd snyder is making a hoody called a sherpa hoody which is made of trademarked and patented polartec (1981)

so yeah it’s a real shitshow out there in the polarfleece world

the late great, Saturday, 19 January 2019 21:21 (five years ago) link

still waiting for someone to write a real comprehensive tome on technical outerwear. there’s gotta be at least a chapter’s worth on polar fleece right there!

i only have one fleece but it’s crackin

My children have Land's End hoodies called Sherpas. Sweatshirt fabric on the outside and fluffy fleece within.

Not my thing personally, but the kids would happily live in them for much of the year, when outside temps are, say, 10 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. October to January and March to May.

Gunther Gleiben (Ye Mad Puffin), Saturday, 19 January 2019 22:14 (five years ago) link

dressing like a toddler is the best imo, but our cold climate is better suited for rugby shirts

now here's a proper fleece

need yr. help, ILS. i'm trying to refresh my neckties. i have seven of them and i wear one every day. i wear them with an oxford or poplin shirt, underneath a v-neck sweater or unstructured sports-coat. here's my list:

plain black (shiny silk)
plain navv (woven silk)
geometric royal/navy blue dot pattern (silk)
gray plaid flannel (thick wool)
three floral neckties - lilac/white dragonflies, white/yellow flowers, and navy/red blossoms (cotton – worn seasonally. i have a soft spot for these. they kind of look like <a href="https://www.thetiebar.com/product/TIE-1655-0201";>this,</a> but cotton)

what amazing ties/patterns can i buy next? (p.s. i don't have much money, so like <$20USD unless something is bananas good)

remy bean, Monday, 21 January 2019 02:05 (five years ago) link

you need some knits and grenadines

call all destroyer, Monday, 21 January 2019 02:09 (five years ago) link

i like striped repp ties personally

the late great, Monday, 21 January 2019 03:21 (five years ago) link

The florals you mention are good. I like solids as well but I would not recommend relying on them so much. Have you considered paisleys?

Personally I don't like to have too many ties with geometric patterns (stripes, plaids, etc.) because I am leery of how those patterns will work with a patterned shirt or jacket.

The rule that you shouldn't mix patterns may be outdated (I see doodz doin this all the time nowadays) but I still follow it. For ne:

Checked or plaid jacket, solid shirt, paisley tie = ok.

Solid jacket, striped shirt, floral tie = ok.

Herringbone tweed jacket, solid shirt, floral or foulard tie = ok.

This has been my world and I am comfortable with its rules. There are loads of variations within those basic boundaries. Lots of room For creativity.

HOWEVER, lately I am seeing tech sales doodz with a checked shirt and a striped tie! Or a striped tie and a differently striped shirt. Maybe things have changed since I learned the rules. Or maybe I'm right and they're wrong. Who knows.

Also, what is up with doodz wearing a button-down collar with a suit. My understanding was that a button-down collar works with separates, but a suit requires a spread or point collar.

Gunther Gleiben (Ye Mad Puffin), Monday, 21 January 2019 03:23 (five years ago) link

your pattern guidelines are reasonable....in theory you can do things like a checked shirt and striped tie if the scale of the patterns contrasts. it gets pretty case-specific.

button-down collars with a suit is possible but 99% of guys trying it don't have the means or the taste to pull it off.

call all destroyer, Monday, 21 January 2019 03:28 (five years ago) link

if you're not wearing a jacket then IMO you shouldn't wear a tie. otherwise you look like a waiter (no v-neck) or a cosplay professor (v-neck).

for that budget, unless you have time to thrift, go to drakes.com, find ties you like, and replicate them on tiebar.com. probably a grenadine, a club tie, and some dots.

Also, what is up with doodz wearing a button-down collar with a suit. My understanding was that a button-down collar works with separates, but a suit requires a spread or point collar.
