like, *really* into it

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 15 January 2019 16:58 (five years ago) link

Yeah, first listen I liked it a lot, second listen I thought it was too "rock" but then third listen it was better again. Hooks and riffs are all super fun.

not yet but i've heard very good things from one of my friends/a fellow ilxor, who called it bazan's best since curse your branches

ok yeah confirmed, the pedro album is pretty awesome, i love "powerful taboo"

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 16 January 2019 19:38 (five years ago) link

and it ends incredibly strongly, last three tracks seem like the best

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 16 January 2019 20:06 (five years ago) link

not really on topic but sort of on topic, but rip mary oliver, it seems beside the point to associate a song inspired by her work with her but i do

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Thursday, 17 January 2019 16:34 (five years ago) link

can confirm the pedro album sounds good. def gains steam (as much steam as a pedro album can gain) as it goes. i really liked circle k and quietest friend on first pass, and the final track for sure. i do wish his vox were recessed just a tad more in the mix. i have the same complaint with most of his solo stuff as well. im definitely going to spend more time with it when its released tomorrow.

I'm enjoying the new Forests album. It's a little midwest, mathy sound and most of the songs end stronger than they begin.

Beyond excited for the new PUP album - The Dream is Over is one of my absolute favourite pop punk releases of the decade.

tangenttangent, Saturday, 19 January 2019 12:08 (five years ago) link

this Forests record is cool, thx tt!!

resident hack (Simon H.), Saturday, 19 January 2019 17:31 (five years ago) link

they sound like a scrappier Tiny Moving Parts

who, speaking of which, have a new double a-side out this week

resident hack (Simon H.), Saturday, 19 January 2019 17:34 (five years ago) link

They do! The TMP single is lovely as well. And Radar State is sounding wonderful!

well now that i’m really excited for the new copeland record, eat, sleep, repeat and you are my sunshine have finally clicked with me, especially the latter

copeland ranked:

ixora

in motion
eat sleep repeat
beneath medicine tree

it does not seem like such a daunting discography but each record is such a stylistic leap that you tend to dwell on 1-2 at a time

current rankings for me:

— in moton (perfect alb)
— beneath medicine tree (feels a little more of its time than the others but it's all wrapped in a sweet concept which still resonates with me)
— eat sleep repeat (beginning to stretch out a little on this one, I saw them in san antonio during this tour) title track is a top 5 copeland track for me)
— you are my sunshine (was losing touch with this type of music a bit around this time, not as deeply engrained in me but it it is great)
— ixora (admittedly need to spend more time with this, and ixora twin)

not a bad or even ok album in the discography. they havent missed yet.

marcos smart (Spottie), Wednesday, 30 January 2019 19:35 (five years ago) link

in motion is def perfect

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 30 January 2019 19:35 (five years ago) link

it's really tied with sunshine in that ranking

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 30 January 2019 19:36 (five years ago) link

not sure what it is about ixora but it's a perfect union of consistent mood and aaron marsh's songwriting expanding to previously unmet horizons. "erase" is some kind of perfect song

if i had to guess blushing seems like it's gonna be the indoor record to ixora's outdoors

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 30 January 2019 19:41 (five years ago) link

i also really love esr and bmt they're all good

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Wednesday, 30 January 2019 19:44 (five years ago) link

lol that PUP video has so much going on, it's crazy. I admire a band that can totally eclipse their own song by overloading you with visual content!

New Martha is sounding very charming.

tangenttangent, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 20:55 (five years ago) link

a friend of a friend of mine directed it so I heard the basic synopsis in advance but it was much more elaborate than I imagined

resident hack (Simon H.), Wednesday, 30 January 2019 21:11 (five years ago) link

I think it’s a great video, just yeah, so elaborate! Will need a few rewatches to absorb the details.

Oh, not exactly the right thread, but I saw Swearin’ last night and they have such a lovely energy together and the whole gig felt very warm. They didn’t play Oil and Water though, which was regretful.

tangenttangent, Wednesday, 30 January 2019 21:57 (five years ago) link

Swearin' fits just fine here, I think

Mordy, Friday, 15 November 2019 20:42 (four years ago) link

what did u think about the now is then is now releases? i only listened through once but wasn't super blown away...

Mordy, Friday, 15 November 2019 20:44 (four years ago) link

No, me neither. I think he was quite self aware about how little people seemed to respond to them. It just seemed a very personal mission. The venue tonight is a Catholic Church, which is cool! Aaw Mordy if me and LJ ever come to the US we’ll try to time it with a Dashboard gig.

tangenttangent, Friday, 15 November 2019 20:46 (four years ago) link

is it a small venue bc he doesn't have such a big following in uk or a big church? when he plays philly/jersey/ny area he always sells out moderate sized venues (sold out two nights in philly during this most recent tour)

Mordy, Friday, 15 November 2019 20:56 (four years ago) link

i think this is being positioned as emo rap but it sounds like it could be an early 1975 song to me

https://soundcloud.com/postcarcrashscene/is-the-taste-of-him-a-sour-reminder-of-everything-that-went-wrong

J0rdan S., Saturday, 16 November 2019 04:42 (four years ago) link

or more precisely, what an early 1975 song would've sounded like if lil peep existed before the 1975 did

J0rdan S., Saturday, 16 November 2019 05:35 (four years ago) link

xp He was doing three nights there and they sold out in minutes! Last time he was over he sold out a large venue.

And speaking of the 1975, apparently Matt Healy joined him on stage the previous night!

the origami angel record is this thread's album of the year https://origamiangel.bandcamp.com/album/somewhere-city

holy crow this is fun! "The Title Track"!!

Simon H., Friday, 6 December 2019 20:06 (four years ago) link

each successive track on this thing = the vince mcmahon reaction meme

Simon H., Friday, 6 December 2019 23:39 (four years ago) link

i like that OA record, but as long as we're nominating Emo Thread AOTY, i'll nom Oso Oso :) it's damn near perfect

alpine static, Friday, 6 December 2019 23:57 (four years ago) link

Yeah, this is good. Is "Midwest Emo" really a genre? That's how RYM labels this, though apparently the band is from DC?

o. nate, Saturday, 7 December 2019 03:03 (four years ago) link

yeah it's a common enough term. the origin of it is that the 90s jangly/mathy second-wave emo scene was most prominent in the us midwest.

ufo, Saturday, 7 December 2019 03:26 (four years ago) link

after a few more listens i kinda think somewhere city is a modern classic

american bradass (BradNelson), Sunday, 8 December 2019 17:05 (four years ago) link

I've listened a bunch - it's grown off me a tiny bit just because the vocals and lyrics seem a little undistinguished but they're clearly a hell of a band, I love the video game music influence

Simon H., Monday, 9 December 2019 05:02 (four years ago) link

Once again something I'd call "emo-adjacent", but on first listen Holy Fawn's Death Spells is kinda scratching my Juno itch, distended and surprisingly aggressive songs with a dense thicket of tones. Not sure yet if the songs are all there but the sound is great. (I guess it was technically issued last year but only made its streaming debut in 2019)

Simon H., Monday, 9 December 2019 13:39 (four years ago) link

I went from thinking the new Creeper song was a decent teaser to being pretty sure it's one of their very best songs. Them, Foxing and Fireworks are my most anticipated for the '20 edition of this thread

Simon H., Tuesday, 10 December 2019 15:30 (four years ago) link

Came here to see if anyone was talking about this insane Origami Angel album - ILX never disappoints. They have a Get Up Kids-y energy to them at times. I'm only halfway through my first listen and I am already so excited.

Also Simon otm about Creeper.

tangenttangent, Thursday, 12 December 2019 13:31 (four years ago) link

origami angel is some top tier motivationcore

ciderpress, Thursday, 12 December 2019 15:45 (four years ago) link

o. nate, Thursday, 12 December 2019 22:59 (four years ago) link

Not sure if beach Slang fits the thread but man I got a review copy of the new record and it ain't good.

i think i have always posted about them in the rolling emo threads anyway. am unsurprised the album sucks

american bradass (BradNelson), Friday, 13 December 2019 16:13 (four years ago) link

I quite liked their first eps and that first record. they've got rid of the hopeful, earnestness that I liked about them and doubled down on rock cliche.

one month passes...

I'm a little late on this one, but if you love The Maine or fellow southwesterners Anarbor (their tracks "Freaking Out!" and "Every High Has a Come Down" especially), check out "Twilight (My Heaven) from Philly band Grayscale. This rowdy, driving tune is loaded with those little elements that you'll find in most great songs, like a glorious pre-chorus, a bass-drum fill (!) midway through the chorus amidst the huge harmonies, and a few moments of silence amidst it all; and it just sounds fantastic blasting on your car stereo with the windows down. ("Baby Blue", another standout track of theirs from '19 album Nella Vita, is in the spirit of The 1975's "She's American")
